Imperial Armour 2 Update

Folks,

Although not specifically just for the Space Wolves, I thought that you might also find this useful. Forgeworld has recently released the .pdf document with updates for their Imperial Armour volume 2 book that has all of the Space Marine vehicles in it. Here is the link: IA2 Update.

I would like to draw your attention to the Lucius Pattern Dreadnought Drop Pod (on page 8 of the update), and note that this is now an Assault Vehicle (thus allowing the Dreadnought to Assault on the same turn that it arrives, which can be on Turn 1 for half of your pods).

It looks like my Bjorn the Fell-Handed and Ironclad Dreadnought Snorri just got themselves a new ride!

I'm looking forward to adding this to my new 5th edition Wolves.

Regards,

Valerian

Even if I was unable to get people to play with it, I wouldn't care because that is the kind of book I just love to read in my free time. I wish they would continue to do the IA books in the 'technical journal' format like the first two rather than trying to tell a story and throw in so much of their own story fluff. I hate to say this but I don't think the people at forge world are good at writing fluff when its not specifically in the 'technical specs and service history' format. Then again considering their WW2 fixation that should not come as too much of a shock should it?

Personally I avoid drop pods all togeather because I simply don't find them very fluffy. That may change when the new dex comes out with some rules that let us use drop pods like other chapters, but even then I think I shall stick to my transports.

Still I do kind of hope that they will come out with a new IA book that returns to their old format where they focused on the vehicles and quit trying to tell bad stories, perhaps one that will include the new land raider we will hopefully be getting.

I'll have to get one just because the model is sweet... I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to let me field one of those...

I couldn't agree more... Good info Valerian, but I think my podding dreads are already powerful enough without a +15 point assault vehicle version. I really like the IA stuff for the background, but they never seem to quite get the balance right in game terms for me...

I have a question about this. It says that, for example, the LR Promethus is an elite choice for an SW army. Does this mean that I can take it in my army to tourneys and such, unless it is stated "No Imperial Armour" or something like that? Or is it just friendly play?

The update is great anyway!

friendly play only unless you can find a tournament that allows them. I have never have seen one yet.

Now this something i would like to see in the space wolf list.

I dont think this is that overpowered dreads lack attacks to be a real monster in close combat except the BA furiso.

I used one tonight in a Planetstrike game - it rocked.

Turn 1 - dropped a Venerable Dread right next to a bastion, charged it, destroyed it, and knocked a few chunks out of the defending devastator squad lurking inside with the help of a phase field generator.

Turn 2 - walked into the dangerous terrain/rubble to muller the rest of the devastator squad.

Turn 3 - finished them off and was sitting pretty in cover on the objective.

But the true glory goes to a pack of 11 Blood Claws including two powerfists under a WGBL with a Thunderhammer who held three dreadnoughts at bay for three turns.

I noticed some of the units count as warmachine detachments. Is that a special hidden slot on the FOC?

Sort of... it counts as an entirely independant "army". It takes up no slots on your FOC, but you can only have 1-3 warmachines per detachment.

Again, this is a "friendly play" kind of thing, so talk to your opponent first.

Except for the rule stating you can't ^_^

And the rule that vehicles dropping in via DS move at cruising speed wich prevents units from assaulting out of them.... Thankfully, as you pointed out, GW was kind enough to put that in the rulebook for people who didnt see it in the BRB.

The only unit we have that can assault out of deepstrike in planetstrike is bloodclaw jump-packers. Anything else is houserules.

Those things are stupidly powerful. Whack an ironclad in one and you're good to go. Better yet two.. and Bjorn.

I have 4 Forgeworld Droppods. Now I need 3 Ironclads to go in with Bjorn at Siegeworld 2010 and look out! (FYI... Siegeworld is a "Giga-Battle" of 40K. Siegeworld 2009 was well over 100,000 points total with your truely contributing 20,000 points of Space Wolves.)
