cities of death short batrep

Looking for something different to try, my friend Graham and I set up a 1000 point cities of death game last night.

My list:

EC w/AAC

crusade squad w/ 10 initiates (PW/flamer) + 6 neos

crusade squad w/ 10 initiates (PF/flamer) + 6 neos

crusade squad w/ 5 initates (HB/plasmagun) + 2 neos

Dreadnought (AC)

Dreadnought (MM)

His list (approx):

Broodlord + 4 'stealer bodyguard (re-roll misses, frags, STR 5)

2 squads of 3 warriors (both were 2 w/ str 6 small blast fun, 1 w/ str 4 pinning large blast gun)

7 'stealers (re-roll misses, frags, STR 5)

9 spineguants (dunno upgrades)

3 raveners

3 zoanthropes

We played gamma level, the mission was too take and hold the center building. I took boobytraps and fuel dump, G took sewer rats and medicae.

I deployed my HB squad in a building with a decent firing lane towards his quarter (fuel dump went there, too) and put my crusade squads and dreadnought wrapped around the rear of the center building, with the dreadnoughts in cover between them. G's deployment over-reacted somewhat to my booby traps-- he put his broodlord in the building across from the front of the center building, the guants and warriors (and medicae) in the building on the opposite side of the center from my fuel dump/ HB building, with everthing else near the central building.

Turn one: I moved on crusader squad partially into the central building, moved the dreadnoughts closer in (forgot to run them), splattered one 'stealer bodyguard with the HB squad through a doorway. On his turn he charged into the central building with his 'stealers, just barely made b2b with my EC. Everything else maneuvered closer to the center, except his raveners, which moved into position to attack my HB squad, but was just out of charge range this turn. In the assault he scored 3 wounds on my EC, and I failed two saves, dropping him. I also lost 2 initiates. I killed enough 'stealers to bring his squad down to 3.

Turn two: I moved my AC dreadnought into position to support the crusade squad fighting the 'stealers, and with cover against the zoanthropes. My MM dread moved closer to the HB squad. My 2nd large crusader squad got slowed down moving through rough terrain, but started moving around the back of central building towards the 'Nids medicae/warrior position. I shot the raveners with the HB squad and MM dread, killing one. My other shooting was ineffectual. In combat I finished off the genestealers in the building with me and consolidated back, away from the broodlord. On G's turn he charged the HB squad with the 2 raveners, killing all but the HB marine. His broodlord moved slowly and cautiously toward the central building along with the gaunts. The warriors and Zoanthropes shot up my crusade squads and one zoanthrope one-shotted my AC dread.

Turn three: I moved my crusade squad out of the central building towards the HB squad and charged into that combat, just barely making it in. Meanwhile my other crusade squad approached his Zoanthropes, guants, and warriors. I shot at the warriors, killing one and then charging them and the gaunts. My dread stepped around the corner and got a charge off on the broodlord and his 2 surviving retinue. I took out the raveners with my crusade squad, my dread got blown up by a 'stealer, and my 2nd squad finished the warriors and killed all but 2 gaunts. On his turn, he shot up my victorious crusade squad and piled his broodlord into the gauntfight, doing major damage. At this point I was down to a heavy bolter marine and a half dozen plus crusader marines.

We played out the rest and he finished off my last squad at the bottom of turn 5. 'Nids win. Fun game, though, we'll be doing a rematch soon with pics.

I like your list, I think it'll be good enough for the job on the replay, and retains templar character. Perhaps hold back a bit, try and get one more round of shooting off and then engage - if you're (extremely) lucky, get the charge.

Another thing could be giving your marines frags in case they don't the charge themselves.

Good report though!

Genestealers are rough. The first real game I ever played was Blood Angels vs. Tyranids, and so I'm not surprised that a 'stealer managed to kill your Dreadnaught. A three way assault between 10 veteran assault marines, a chaplain/6 death company models vs. Genestealers and a broodlord ended... badly. Nids are crazy. Templars are also crazy. Win the next one for us!
