To be specific to a newcomer beyond a few lines of text.

1: Buy some chaos marines, and if you dont like the horned look then get some regular space marines and file off their chest wings. You should have about 30 marines with bolters before getting champions and special guns.

2: Read through the chaos codex many times and ask/search for lists and what to use.

3: Fluff of word bearers disallows "cult troops" that means no berzerkers, thousand sons, plague marines or noise marines.

What special units and weapons you get relies entirely on how you want to make your end list. So build up to 2000 points at the end if your serious about chaos marines.

You can play whatever you want really if you dont want to follow the fluff. Its not unnatural for a temporary use of cult troops for a campaign.

Have fun. Remember that you will lose a bunch when you start, its all about learning the rules. Check the tacticas and the links in my signiture after you get used to the rules.

Well a nice core would be:

- 3 Chaos Space Marine Squads with an Icon of Chaos Glory per squad and a rhino for each squad.

- Some Daemons. Wordbearers are strong when it comes to Daemonsummoning.

- A Chaos Terminator Bodyguard of 4 or so for your Chaos Sorceror Lord (who can serve as your Dark Apostle) + a Landraider.

- 3 Obliterators

- 1 Defiler

That should make for a nice solid army.
