honersstodnt
do captains need to stay attached to their command squads in battle? because a 5 man command squad is cheaper than a unit of vanguard, and much better... I use a terminator captain to support my terminator squad, and if I could take a command squad to act as a control center for the rest of my army it would be great... I tend to fail morale, so a banner would be awesome. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177342-command-squad-question/ Share on other sites
Bearer of the Word
I am not 100% sure on this; I don't think the Captain can move away from the command squad because it is technically a "retinue". Units in a retinue must be near the unit they are protecting/serving. Correct me if I'm wrong. drakus40k
The command squad is NOT a retinue. Vanilla marine commanders do not have any retinues available to them. The Captain is free to deploy with the command squad if he wishes, but does not have to, and can move away from the squad at any time. Same with a Chapter Master & honour guard. Both command squads & honour guards are separate units. Grey Mage
so he can deploy separately from the rest of his command squad, right? Yes, he can deploy anywhere he wants, assuming its in your deployment zone, your reserves, in a transport that can hold him, or joined to any squad he can legally be part of. That might be the command squad... it might not. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177342-command-squad-question/#findComment-2096508 Share on other sites
Frosty the Pyro
Indeed, as far as deployment and IC attachment goes, the command squad is no different than a tactical squad.
