okay currently i'm w/ the black templars and am in high consideration of taking grey knights as a secondary army for 2 reasons.

1. black templars and grey knights go together really well and they're the only allies i can take that can use psychic powers

2. a friend of mine is going w/ chaos and i can't think of a better way to tick him off. :D

so what i want to know is, how do grey knights function, what are thery're special rules, why are almost all of them psychers, i've already been to youtube and watched a few videos on grey knights powers, armory, and units. only reason i'm posting this is because i don't want to waste money on a codex i won't use when i could've bought an emperors champion

Well, it would be kinda illegal of us to post a full summary of the DH codex like you're asking. ^_^ Do any of your friends have the codex? Can you go to your game store and flip through one? Otherwise, I recommend you check out the various links -- especially the tacticas -- available in our Online Resources topic stickied at the top of this forum. When people talk about how to use GKs, they will be revealing quite a bit of what you're seeking.
okay i didn't quite mean it like that what i meant was are they shooty or assaulty,

They're both. Equally. Perfectly balanced, in fact. It's what makes them unique.

Again, check out some of the tactical advice regarding GKs. It's very good, and very informative and revealing.

and are any of they're rules good?

That's totally subjective, isn't it? :P

Before repeating the question, check what subforum you're posting in again. OK, now what do you think we're going to say in response to that? :P

Black Templars and Grey Knights do go together really well - the BT provide a mass of close combat power, and Grey Knights provide a stable and reliable stream of fire!

2. a friend of mine is going w/ chaos and i can't think of a better way to tick him off. ;)

Yeah, Daemonhunters have a lot of wargear that is very anti-Chaos. Reducing initiative, reducing weapon skill, etc :) Imagine - a squad of GKs with sacred incense and a black templar squad assaulting a unit of Chaos Terminators...

Grey Knights are hard to use properly _on their own_. They are expensive; a Sergeant costs more than a Terminator, a single Grey Knight is almost twice the cost of a Space Marine. However, they can (almost) keep up with Black Templars and maintain full firepower, they are S6 and WS5, they almost always strike with 2 attacks except Justicars, who strike with three power weapon attacks. They are a perfectly balanced mix of assault and shoot.

Fluffwise, all the Grey Knights are psykers because they need to be able to resist and exorcise Daemons; they are utterly pure, totally incorruptable, and they have the strongest minds of all the Emperor's men-at-arms. Not a single Grey Knight in 10,000 years has turned to Chaos. If the idea of commanding a squad of silver ghosts alongside the righteous zeal of the Templars gives you goosebumps, they are totally right for you. Check out the Lexicanum article on Grey Knights for some more of their background!

okay i've got new questions

1. can grey knights feild chaplains because i printed off a reference sheet from GW and i'm not seeing a chaplain stat line?

2. do i need my space marine codex, i don't think i do but i just need to know if it works in conjunction w/ it?

thanks: shan vener

Both of these questions are answered in the DH codex. :P

GKs don't have Chaplains, Apothecaries, Librarians, or any of the other trappings of lesser Astartes chapters. (At least in terms of the actual game.) The GKs aren't even a "chapter" in the normal sense of the word. Fluffwise and playstyle-wise, they are entirely different beasts from lesser Astartes. They happen to wear power armour and share a decent amount of common Imperial [Marine] wargear, but that is as far as the similarities go.

Your SM codex is useless with respect to GK rules.

You will need to purchase the Codex: Daemonhunters and then download the FAQ for Daemonhunters from the Games Workshop website. Then you can start seeing what attributes Grey Knights can bring to your force.

When using Grey Knights as allies most people opt for the Terminators. You will find out what it is you can take as allies to your Black Templars by reading the appropriate section on Allies in the Daemonhunters codex.
