DGC
It's coming along nicely I was curious in how you have gotten so much detail in the sculpting, what you used and how you went about it. I know many would say 'practice' but sometimes having someone show you from begining to end can help so much. In particular a step-by-step of the hair - do you just add a blob, smooth out and wait a while before trying to detail it or do you add tiny sausages of putty and add them individually?? I suppose similar questions go for the fur (which on newer minis, especially the plastic ones is quite different to the older ones) and the armour. Are these built up in layers??etc etc When you have time. For now, get this one finished mate DGC Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177753-tsuros-great-hunt-wolf-lord/page/2/#findComment-2135308 Share on other sites
Tsuro
So I've been and seen my brother and persuaded him to briefly part with his camera. To avoid the spotlight effect of a single strong light source I made up a crude light box out of grease-proof paper, my desk light and a torch. I think the paper may have been too thick though as the pictures were awfully dark. I've brightened them digitally but they're still not fantastic. I'm going to hold onto the camera though, and if I can scrounge up some more lights (or the weather improves) I'll aim for some better pics. I'm also going to take some pics of my old wolves. They were painted about a decade ago and I've done very little painting (save for some basic epic eldar) in the interim. It's amazing how much difference online tutorials, colour theory and increased patience have made. If I hadn't been rushing to complete the pledge, there were a number of techniques/theories I wanted to experiment with. Have to use them next time. Things that went well - The metal on the combi-weapon, looks like just the right amount of weathered. When I painted the face and the pelt, they both looked too bright to be 'natural.' I had the idea to hit them with a grey glaze to dull them down and I'm unreasonably pleased with myself for having the thought. Things that went badly - I could not get the sword right. I tried to do the weathered metal as I had on the combi-weapon and it just didn't work. In the end I went for a dull blue to brown but it's fairly uninspired. No pupils - everytime I tried they either went cross-eyed or cartoony. It didn't help that I had fallen in love with the "grim" face and was afraid of losing it. Still, I do think their absence is more pronounced than I had anticipated. I was curious in how you have gotten so much detail in the sculpting, what you used and how you went about it. I'll get a general GS tut up. My method isn't much different to everyone else's, but you never know what people will find helpful. I'll definately do a tut for the hair - I found it incredibly frustrating to "get it right" on this figure before lucking into the method I used. Hopefully I can replicate it. I've noticed the difference in fur as well. It was pretty easy to do on this model, as I was just copying what was in front of me. I'll try and scratch sculpt a pelt in the same style and see what techniques I use. I will say now though that almost everything is either built in layers (which is why there are different shades of GS/BS in one place) or worked on in isolation e.g I didn't repair the pelt all in one go.
