Project: Terminator

Thanks man. I see what you mean about some of the scale issues but there still a lot of nice stuff there. The powerfist is really nice, for example, and the helmet, although a bit off on scale is cool.

lol. I think it might be a little late for a tutorial now as I cant do the under construction photos. And every other stage would be "Hit head against wall and begin sawing to get the size just right!" :P

Sorry for the double post but I need people's opinions. Ive been looking on the terminator and I realised that the upper legs are actually too thick for it to be a scaled up version of the 40k terminator. But if I do them the correct scale that will have the same problem that Artimus does, the legs inside the armour would have to be stupidly skinny.

So do I make something thats not exactly the same as the GW terminator but is more biologically correct or do I go for something that is biologically impossible but the same as a standard GW terminator?

Well its been a while since Ive done an update. Ive been working on a lot of the bits simultaniously as everything involves milliput and greenstuff which takes frustratingly long to dry :P Hopefully I will be finishing a number of bits pretty soon.

The first thing to show you is the powerfist. Getting this the right size has taken longer than I thought it would but I really wanted to get across that its something large enough to do you a LOT of damage but also not be too large that its totally impractical. I also made it a bit harder on myself by cutting it in half to hollow out portions of it so that I can put the "fingers" in at a later date. This way I can cast it and each powerfist can have its fingers and thumb in different positions (closed, open, pointing, etc). As you can see its made up from a load of different materials including clear perspex type stuff which I used for a spacer thinking it would be thicker so I could do it in one layer. As it turned out crafting it to the same shaper was a total nightmare and I wont be doing that again in a hurry

The next thing I have finally done is the lenses for the head. I've been playing around with using tubing and crafting it to shape for the eyes so that the curve is exactly the same on both eyes. In the end it just turned out totally impractical and just didnt want to work. So I went back to greenstuff, sculpting one lens and leaving it to totally dry (so if I touch it it doesnt go horribly wrong ;p) and then doing the next. They look pretty symmetrical to me... Hopefully you guys think so too.

The last thing that had just finished drying is the armour plating that covers the joint between the groin and the legs. Nothing major to report other than getting it to stay curved just right while the greenstuff and milliput dried.

At the moment Im working on the stormbolter which I hope to have done pretty soon. Ive never really looked at a stormbolter up close on a terminator but go have a look. Its totally asymmetrical (in design not by accident). I was pretty surprised and its made getting everything to look right harder than I thought it would as your eye normally looks for things to be symmetrical.

One last thing. I need some help. Does anyone know of a good source of resin IN THE UK that I can buy off? Im having a tough time finding any and an even tougher time finding mould release spray. So if anyone knows where I can get anything like that Id really appreciate it.

Thanks again for following this along and your encouragement. It really helps.

TOMPS You can get mould reslease spray too and I alos use fillite powder to make the resin go a bit further.

Knowing how tricky the lenses in a terminator helmet are to do I think you've pulled it off quite well. On the leg issue I would go for making them anatomically correct every time. The proportions that GW use look good at 28mm scale but at 54mm you can see how deformed they look easily.

Another quick update.

Just finished the shoulder pad. Obviously Ive only done one as it will be the same both sides and then I will sculpt on any details I want.

It was a total pain in a place you dont want pain but Ive managed to get the shoulder pad hollowed out so that it fits on nice and cleanly as it should do.

Hope you like it.

Thanks guys. Hopefully the storm bolter will be finished later tonight or tomorrow.

@ Pingo: I've been luck to find a plasticard that seems to bend OK (as long as I do it very gradually with my fingers) and then stays mostly how Ive bent it up to a point. The armour plating for the leg a couple of updates ago is a little more than it comfortably stays on its own but when its glued to something it stays where it is pretty well.

@Midas: I havent started making the mould for anything yet. Im going to save that till Im done and I can do it all at once. But Ive got what looks like a great place for resin and stuff like that now thanks to the link from Forgeman.

@Forgeman: Thanks mate. That site is EXACTLY what Ive been looking for for over a year now. Great stuff!

Finally got the stormbolter done. More than any other piece this has required SO much drying time for the green stuff!

In the end I did it in two bits as I didnt think it would mould well in just one so the magazine is separate. This also means if I want to do the double sickle mags on one then I can (even though its unlikely as I will as they seem to have a stupidly little amount of ammo considering it cant be changed during battle).

Annoyingly I also doubt the trigger guard will cast well because its too thin. But I can always redo it with plasticard if I have to ;p

I just ordered my casting stuff and am off to town today to look for mould making supplies :P
