koran
This is looking very awesome. Much better than what could do.Any chance you might put up plans for those of us that would like to offer you the greatest respect and have their own go? Erm... I would but there arnt really any plans. I just went off a 40k scale terminator and the Inquisitor scale marine and the rest is estimations and guess work based on what looked right... Sorry. But give it a go. Once you get your eye in its not so hard. Its just about doing things in the right stages. koran
Its been nearly a week since the last update, sorry about that. But I have been busy working on it, I just havent had time to post pics. On the majority of the parts the moulds are now complete and I have done a first cast. The legs, arms and bolter, unfortunately havent been done as I was sold some RTV rubber without enough catalyst! A bit pissed about that but what you going to do. And on the same day I realised that I had my resin delivered only for almost all of it to have spilt! Not a huge deal as the TOMPS people were very nice about it and sent me off some more as soon as I had let them know. I might as well go through this stage by stage in brief as some people have mentioned some curiosity as to how you make moulds/casts. First of all there are two main types of casts. One that require a single piece mould and another that required two pieces. For the terminator I have used both as some pieces were fine with one (feet, armour plate, the "cowl" powerfist, groin) and others had a lot of undercuts so needed two (everything else). Once I had decided what moulds to use for each I made boxes into which the RTV rubber will be poured. These are for the one piece moulds (note that the pieces are glued flat side down to the bottom of the box): http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3628.jpg And these are some of the two piece moulds (these have to be suspended in the centre of the box at first, for this Ive used playdough to see if it works - by the way it does but demoulding after this first stage is a bit messy): http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3632.jpg Once this is done you need to remember that things are going to get messy. The rubber is horrible stuff that seems to get everywhere if given a chance. Ive collected everything I needed onto my painting table and covered the table in a black plastic bag. You need: Scales (digital is a must for this), something disposable to measure and mix in (thats the cups), something to mix with (those wooden mixy things you get in Starbucks are great and you can normally grab a handful if no one is looking), RTV rubber and its catalyst. And yes I know my painting table is a mess but then that the way I like it  http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3634.jpg Spray everything to be moulded with mould release, then mix the RTV rubber with the catalyst in the amounts recommended on the box and pour (making sure everything is covered). As you can see I wrote what is in what on the side of the boxes for the next stage. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3635.jpg Once it has dried (I leave it a little over a day) remove the boxes and the playdough. For the single piece moulds your done. For the two piece moulds you need to re-box them and repeat. Note that its VERY important to spray again with mould release or cover the rubber for the lower part of the mould with Vaseline or the second rubber will stick to the first with no way of getting it apart. If for some reason your so tired and/or hungover that your moronic enough to forget this *Raises hand* you have to take forever carefully cutting the mould apart praying to the Emperor that you dont cut in the wrong place. For some reason I havent got photos of the moulds but I will take some if people are interested. For casting you simply bind the two piece moulds together and pour the mixed resin in through a hole you will need to make into the mould. I can take a picture of the casting process but all you will see is the moulds bound together with some goop on the top... Not that exciting Im afraid ;p Here's what I've managed to cast up so far. The body: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3636.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3637.jpg The groin: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3638.jpg The head: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3639.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3640.jpg The powerfist: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3641.jpg The cowl: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3644.jpg And the shoulder pad: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3645.jpg This is exactly how they came out of the mould. As you can see there is some flash and a couple of air bubbles but thats just the way with resin and shouldnt be hard to fix with a little greenstuff. koran
Just started working again (finally!) recently so I havent managed to do much. Ive done a cast for the stormbolter and arms (no pics of that sorry) but the stormbolter has a few air bubbles because of all the small little bits. Surprisingly the trigger guard cast fine which is pretty cool. Ive mostly been working on the Deathwing symbol (yes I know, stop your booing and hissing :)) and the crux terminatus. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3647.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3648.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3650.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3649.jpg How come of the Crux's Ive seen have bones on as well (crossed behind the skull) and I cant decide if I want to include them or not. At the moment Im thinking not but I might change my mind before I get the stuff to cast it ;p Ive been working a little on the body but not too much. When I get some more done there I will post an update. Dravenguild
Brilliantly executed my good man! though I don't play inquisitor, I would jump at the opportunity to be able to paint one of these as a collector's piece. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177857-project-terminator/page/3/#findComment-2123356 Share on other sites
Midas
Sweet, there ain't nothing wrong with Deathwing. The sculpts you did for them are amazing! As for the crux terminatus, Id cast one without bones and one with. Just my two sense. Keep up the good work. Starblayde
Ive mostly been working on the Deathwing symbol (yes I know, stop your booing and hissing :P) Good choice - which chapter is going to allow one of their most treasured armour possessions out (not to mention the veteran inside) on a random Xenos hunt? Considering they've got a lot of suits and they're always after the Fallen, Deathwing make the perfect choice. Plus the white/bone style is very cool. Looking forward to see the full model! koran
Again its been a while since I last updated. This time a combo of work taking up too much time :D and me trying to put bones on the crux. Simply put I didnt like them after I had done it so took them off again... Oh well, lesson learnt. Since then I have been playing around with the first torso. I went for a simple chest of a dark angel. Im pretty happy with it. Next will probably be similar but with a skull at the centre. Im still waiting to get the stuff through to finish moulding the legs. The shop I bought it off of are jerking me around. Im probably just going to order some more off TOMPS as their service was great. Anyways, just a few pics: http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3653.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3654.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3655.jpg Hope you like it. koran
How do you get that kind of precision!? Lots of measurements and doing everything in multiple small stages and checking it... koran
Thanks guys. All your support is really great and that other people like what Im doing is obviously a great motivator. Bored of waiting for the shop I bought my RTV rubber at to get its act together Ive bought some more to cast up the shoulder pads and legs. Very exciting stuff here, its blue! ;) http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3658.jpg Im just about happy with the left arm which, so not too many are armed with plain powerfists, I made into a chainfist so I thought Id show that. The fingers are going to have to be made for each fist as casting something this small was just pointless and I wanted to have them in different positions for each hand. The chainfist is (yep you guessed it) two chainswords with one having most of its teeth removed. Heres a few pics and one of it loosely on the body so you can see its size. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3661.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3663.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3664.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3665.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3666.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3667.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177857-project-terminator/page/3/#findComment-2145724 Share on other sites

Midas
Nice! Why is it pointless to cast the fingers? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177857-project-terminator/page/3/#findComment-2145748 Share on other sites
koran
Well it cast them as each section of finger would mean 12 different casts, all REALLY small. And even then it would be almost as much of a pain to put it together as making them from scratch. Or I would have to do the whole fingers which would mean they would all be in very similar positions which I dont like the sound of ;p And thanks Alienerd Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/177857-project-terminator/page/3/#findComment-2145767 Share on other sites
Thalric Ice-Wolf
Thats some real epicness right there. All the detail and everything is just really cool. ThespianSeagull
Wow this is amazing. I'm a bit of a n00b, but what is that white stuff you are making it out of? I recognize the green stuff. koran
there are two types of "white stuff". The pure white stuff (only in a few areas) is milliput, the more off white/beige stuff is resin that ive cast from the original. hope that helps. oh, if u look back far enough theres also some white stuff which is plasticard.
