Project: Terminator

Just a quick update, nothing major. Ive been working on a few things at the same time as they seem to be taking a while for greenstuff to dry so Ive been finding other things that need doing.

The first is the small shield that will have the terminators personal heraldry on it. I didnt want this to be too big to obscure any of the work on the chest or arm but it needed to be big enough to paint something cool on.

The second thing is working on the shoulder pad for the right arm. I dont want them all to be totally identical so each will have something a little different. For this guy Im going for some scroll work so that I can have his name written somewhere. Im thinking all of them will have this somewhere, but for this guy the shoulder seemed like a good place.

The hand of for the stormbolter arm has just finished drying and Im pretty happy with it. I think it was the right choice to not cast anything hand like as its meant that Ive been able to do the trigger finger in position and looking like the gun is about to be fired. Ive also started adding on some of the great FW purity seals.

Now onto the legs. They are coming on alright and I actually had him standing yesterday for a bit! Madness to see it nearly done, feels like Ive been working on this guy forever!

How long have you been working on him? I spent thirteen months building mine.

Looking really good so far :wallbash:

That hand is amazing GS work!!

I can't wait to see this guy 100%

Any thoughts on a pose yet? I'm hoping your going for a very action based pose.

Or maybe have his limbs movable? He is every pose in one!!!! hehe

Deathwing shoulder pads? YESSSS!! And the purity seals actually look to scale with the mini now, instead of being the same size as a brother's arm X-D

And this thing must be huge...the size of that little crux thing on the stormbolter is already pretty large...for a gun size.... Holy camoley.

Deathwing...yesssss =-D Fantastic work.

Im not really sure how long Ive been working this guy, maybe a week before I began posting about him... So about a month and a half. Hopefully the subsequent ones will get done faster, though now Im working I dont know if thats going to be the case.

Looking at the "hip" armour to protect the weak jointing I wasnt happy with the way it had turned out. The way Id moulded it gave it a flat backing and this just didnt suit the model. So Ive remade them from plasticard. It's just way simpler to make them for each terminator than going through the hassle of making a two part cast.... That and Im impatient and couldnt take a three day wait ;p

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/NeilCollins_/Terminator/DSCF3679.jpg

With that done Ive also finished the legs. Ive been working on them for a while now on the side of all the other parts as they needed a lot of greenstuff drying time...

And with those done it means that the majority of the terminator is done ;)

The pose Ive gone for is a purposeful marching forward while firing slightly off centre (obviously with the head following where the stormbolter's aiming).

The arm (just being held on with blue tac for now, sagged a little towards the end so the head and stormbolter dont line up perfectly... When I glue it that wont be an issue.

And cos I havent shown them properly, heres a close ups of the legs:

OK, I went a little excessive on the photos... Sorry for anyone with a slow connection... Hope you guys like him.

Now two things...

Firstly, does he need more purity seals? Im not going to be doing any robes over the armour (at least not for this guy) as I want him to be quite practical. The only one that will be getting robes is Belial (if I decide to do him). So are the few purity seals that are there enough? I will be painting on litanies of faith over the armour in places and Im thinking that should be enough, but Im interested what other people think.

And the second question, what terminator should I work on next? Ive got to wait a while before I can begin painting as I need to order some things in so while Im waiting I can get started on the next guy.

Your choices are:

Sargent (thunder hammer and stormshield)

Apothecary (stormbolter, powerfirst and narcathium)

Banner Barer (stormbother, powerfist and -shockingly- a banner)

Heavy Weapon (probably an assault cannon and powerfist).

Theres only two forums Im posting this guy on so your vote will count for quite a bit (though Im thinking my gf's vote might have to count for two :yuck:)

need to shrink the groin and upsize the legs a bit...unless he's meant to waddle across the battlefield.

that looks so painful.

Biologically your correct. According to the GW models however, its actually thinner than it should be. This is the problem with up-scaling some of the parts of this model, I had the same issues with the legs, the thighs are a lot thicker than the GW model would dictate.

Most of the time I have gone between the two so that its instantly recognisable as a terminator without too many variations but more close to biological correctness, I dont think Im going to be able to accomplish that in this case. I will have a think about if Im going to change it or not as I totally see your point but dont want it to stop looking like a terminator in that area. What does everyone else think?

Maybe the leg issue could be fixed if you simply reposition the legs just a few millimeters.

Like this:

Then you can have a little less of that squishy connection stuff between legs and waist and make it look less silly.

If I were you, I would fix the legs before starting a new one. This project is so amazing but the legs just drag the whole thing down.

I don't think you need to reposition the legs, just widen the moulded part of the pelvis. Looking at the model the hip joints stick right out. This would represent the boney structure of the human hip joint well. But, the sacrum/pelvis is as wide if not wider than your hips. I don't think it would be too difficult to change (with your modeling abilities anyway). Green stuff the pouch part of the groin to create a wider V, extending over the joins of the hips. The belt would also have to be modified, but the torso could stay the same width.

Excellent modelling though, I really like the fist!!

Done. Man I love days off, you can get SO much done ;p

Ive reworked the groin and got the legs pinned back. I just need to wait for the supporting greenstuff to dry so I can sculpt on the flexible bit. Then the hip armour will need repositioning.

Man I hate waiting for greenstuff to dry, in about an hours time I wont be able to work on this guy until Saturday. How frustrating.

I'll post pics once its finished :tu:

First off: EPIIIIIC!!!

I love this guy, I want one! :tu:

also: I think the heraldry shield looks a tad small in comparison... maybe a slightly bigger one...?

Secondly:

And the second question, what terminator should I work on next? Ive got to wait a while before I can begin painting as I need to order some things in so while Im waiting I can get started on the next guy.

I think you should work on the Sergeant next, loads of modelling possibilities with that shield of his ;)

after him, the Banner Bearer, more modelling possibilities

then the Apothecary, even more modelling possibilities

and finally the Heavy, but make his PF a CF instead, just to balance squad loadout a little

it's either that or the other way around, saving the best 'till last ;)

Keep up the fantastic work! :(

legs and feet a bit bigger and the head a bit further into the chest

and then it will be near perfect

Ditto.

Remember that Inquisitor Scale Space Marines are closer to the artwork then they are to the models, and that Inquisitor is closer to True Scale then it is to Heroic Scale. Up-scaling a Heroic Scale model into a True Scale game will result in many problems.

As well as fixing the legs and setting the helmet further back, also consider setting the arms lower, lest the Marine look like a gorilla.

I really like him ! Masterpiece !

I've always wanted to have a "collection size" space marine, and wonder why GW does not sell some.

Really cool terminator you got here, can't wait to see the painting done !

Thanks guys.  Ive managed to sort out pretty much all the comments people had about things that needed fixing and the model looks much better because of it.

Firstly, Ive sorted the pose by reworking the groin, bringing the lower portion into a more "pointed" V which has made the model more biologically correct.  Just a note for anyone thats going to try this in the future, dont pay too much attention to the GW model.  In some places its a total biological fail and you just have to go with what you think works better.

Ive also sorted the feet to make them wider.  Length wise they are fine (at least to me) but did need something to beef them out and this has sorted it.

Because I cast the body as one piece its left the area where I needed to attach the head very flat, pushing the head forward.  From the side this made it look a little elongated.  (Probably the hardest bit) Ive cut into the resin and made a large enough indent to place the head in so its further back which (at least to me) has made it look much more like the terminator model

Ive also thrown in a pic of him with a 40k terminator (admittedly missing one arm ;)) so you guys can have a look at the scale.  For some reason my camera refused to focus on it though!

Thanks for all the comments again, they really help in perfecting the model.
