Project: Terminator

Thanks guys.  Ive managed to sort out pretty much all the comments people had about things that needed fixing and the model looks much better because of it.

Firstly, Ive sorted the pose by reworking the groin, bringing the lower portion into a more "pointed" V which has made the model more biologically correct.  Just a note for anyone thats going to try this in the future, dont pay too much attention to the GW model.  In some places its a total biological fail and you just have to go with what you think works better.

Ive also sorted the feet to make them wider.  Length wise they are fine (at least to me) but did need something to beef them out and this has sorted it.

Because I cast the body as one piece its left the area where I needed to attach the head very flat, pushing the head forward.  From the side this made it look a little elongated.  (Probably the hardest bit) Ive cut into the resin and made a large enough indent to place the head in so its further back which (at least to me) has made it look much more like the terminator model

Ive also thrown in a pic of him with a 40k terminator (admittedly missing one arm ;)) so you guys can have a look at the scale.  For some reason my camera refused to focus on it though!

Thanks for all the comments again, they really help in perfecting the model.

New legs are PERFECT. looks spectacular and the pose looks very realistic!

im gonna cast my vote for: Heavy Weapon (probably an assault cannon and powerfist).

Assault cannon wielding deathwing are one of the coolest models in the 28mm range ( IMO ) so to see one in inquisitor scale would be freakn' amazing, and judging by this guy you're certainly up to the task!

as for the feet i think thats due to distortion because i take the photos close up to get the details. ill see if i can sort that out next photos i

OK, well the painting has started.

This is the first "layer" to be the power armour (before paint). The bone colour will then be applied over the top with salt masking to give a slightly worn/chipped look to it.

The colour is boltgun metal (GW) with a thick badab black (GW) wash and a distant "powdering" of burnt umber (VAC) to give it somevarioation of colour and a slightly bronzy effect that should look nicer than plain silver metal against the bone of the armour.

I also threw in an inquisitor to make a size comparison. At first I was worried that he's too big but then it was pointed out that the inquisitor is going to be what? 5-6ft. Lets say 6ft. Then factor in his (typical GW) bent knee, horse riding stance so thats about 5.5ft. And hes about 2/3rds the height of the terminator putting the terminator in at 8.5 to 9.5ft tall. So OK, a little too big Im thinking, but not by so much that it bothers me.

What do you guys think?

He is cool

very well done

And on the scale terms.

Marine is 7.5-8 foot tall.

meaning in power armour he is taller still.

And so terminator armour he should be about that size. If anyone asks just say he is slightly taller than most marines.

Hmmmm ninja-man, think about it, Chuck Norris is EXACTLY that cool !

Think about it, I tell you 8)

Great job ! Hmmm IMHO, you really should dig the front upper casing upside/alongside the round head thing... This plain stuff sounds a bit weird. Rest is ace !

this is friggin awesome!

people expect terminators to be huge so I wouldnt worry about the scale comments.

I also love his stand-up/straight pose. All GW's terminators have this hunchback syndrom while some of the "new" art in the Dark Angels codex show a much straighter appearance.

I also love the size of that storm bolter / ammo drum compared to the inquisitor! Though fear that might be a little big in comparison... then again the inquisitor may be in power armor, he is still only human at about 5.5/6 feet...

Well it seems like an age since I last updated this. And even more annoyingly its been about that long since Ive had a chance to work on it. Sorry guys.

Well some good news and some bad.

Ive managed to get the left (chainfist) arm painted up. (YAY) I wanted to go for a slightly beaten up look as I dont like the perfectly new looking models you see that much (especially on larger scale models).

However, the salt masking technique I wanted to use, and Ive used in the past on a Valkyrie , just doesnt work. On a Valkyrie most of the chipping can be at random (for the most part) but one something this scale it totally doesnt work. The damage needs to be positioned in a more controlled way and annoyingly I didnt realise this until after I had tried out the salt masking.

Ive now come up with an alternate technique based off salk masking but with things mixed up a bit but this has left this model a little messy as I had to do a few resprays ;) (BOO). This has left the model with a slightly grainy texture making it a pain in the arse to paint and blend.

Nothing I can do about that now as (as far as I know) you cant strip paint off resin and green stuff without damaging it. When (if) I finish the squad I will have to position this guy towards the back or remake him if I have time.

Without further mumbling on my part here's the pics.

I was toying with what colour to do the crux and went for this greyish stone in the end. More bone just wasnt going to get a bit boring along side the bone armour and worn/faded purity seals (also a close to bone colour ;)).

As always comments and criticism welcome.

In other news does anyone on here have any idea whats going on with thepainteddragon forum? I cant seem to get on it....

Don't worry too much about the battle damage. On some areas (like the front of the fist) it actually looks quite good.

Once you have painted all the details, it won't be that bad. Just try to take the focus away from the armor.

After all, it's your first mini at that scale, so you won't be able to avoid a bit of try and error...

The front of the fist is actually the new technique Im trying out as is the bit on the elbow. The idea was that I liked the salt masking look but wanted to choose where it went. So I masked off small areas with masking fluid using a brush. It worked out a lot more like how I wanted it (well more that it was in the places I wanted it). For the next one I will do this for all the battle damage.

Finally got some more done. Ive been working on a few too many projects all at the same time and nothing seems to be getting done :P

However, I have managed to get the right arm pretty much finished. But one question remains. On a boltgun according to the fluff the shells dont have cases. But in most pictures they are shown with cases and Im thinking it could make the magazine look nicer. What do people recon?

Ive also got a bit of the assault cannon done. Just the barrels and the beginnings of the housing so far but at least its progress.
