Mr.Millar's Tank restoration + army thread

Mr.Millar

Recommended Posts

After doing nothing but lurking on the B&C I have decided to Man up and create a modest army thread for my work in progress DIY chapter the Iron Vanguard.

Long story short, I have aquired a pair of scrap worthy tanks for my army from a maket stall (£10 for the pair!!) and i am going to set about restoring them and recording my progress in this thread. The tanks in question are a Land raider and Rhino. The land raider is missing both sponson weapons :tu: which look like they have been ripped off, the ramp mechanism isn't in there (or it is broken) and the whole thing looks like it is held together with spit, prayers and 3 tubes of superglue.

The rhino is unassembled and i am working on taking the land raider apart at the moment.

C&C, ideas for weaponry, etc are all welcome.

The Rhino:

All of the pieces seem to be there, however there is a massive amount of paint on parts of it and the front panel is beyond repair by the look of it.

Oh good lord! I have to wish you the best of luck with that Rhino - Might I suggest some spaced/extra armour on the sides.

I'll be following with interest to see how you get on as I'm doing something similar - turning an old rhino into a razorback with some COD bits :)

I love stuff like this so i'll be looking forward to seeing your progress. Is your DIY a loyalist chapter? Looks like it could take a bit of work to clean up/ de-chaosify the vehicles. I've been meaning to do the opposite and take a mangled land raider and turn it to chaos. This might just spur me on! :)

Excellent, nothing is more satisfying than looking at a newly painted tank and remembering how it started out.

It also forces you to be creative with conversions so you end up with something truly unique.

I look forward to seeing it finished.

Wow, that rhino has seen every color in the book... Whats interesting to me is your picture of the rhino with the paint half stipped reminds me of the show "tank overhaul" on the military channel. :tu: Good luck with all of this. Patience and a steady hand will win the day for you with both of these builds.

Update :D Finished taking the land raider apart (Yay) and have made a nasty discovery involving the top panel (the bit that covers the tracks and the center) it seems to be beyond repair, fortunately the bitz box has the piece in stock which should arrive in a few days.

I am thinking about converting the rhino into a razorback with the LR's heavy bolters (and maybe magnetizing the weapon too.)

Extra Armour is a good idea to help hide the sides of the rhino a little, I'd have to go for the reinforced as I don't like the look of the spaced armour too much.

and thank the emperor, the inside of the land raider is practically untouched which is a relief as I'll only have to strip the paint off of the outside.

@Medusa_ritchie: yes, my chapter is loyalist and there are a few pics of my freshly painted assault squad and one of my snipers I'm working on below.

And yes, i can see the mold lines on the assault squad and I'm kicking myself for forgetting to remove them (it happens :D ) i was watching the last samurai the other night when i was painting them and i didn't realize until I'd done the 2nd dry brush, oops.

New term at college starts tomorrow so I don't expect much in the way of progress until the weekend, ill try to fit some updates in as i go along. :tu:

C&C welcome as always.

Edit: Grammar & Spelling.

Personally, i prefer the nail varnish remover method, you soak 'em in it for 5 minutes and then scrub them, it comes right off, i stripped all 10 of my AOBR tactical marines and the captain in less than half an hour. They didn't have this much paint and gunk on them though. if my method fails, ill get some simple green :) .

yet another idea for stripping plastic and metal is fairy power spray.

works a charm.

Speaking of which, i did something very similar to what your doing (ie bought a scrap worthy land raider and rhino off ebay rather than a stall, rhino was in a worse state and i replaced the old metal raider crusader parts with the plastic bits pack) in pretty much the same state yours are in, and i'm enjoying seeing how you've done it differently :D

also i really like your scheme (i like metalics :D)

enjoy ^^

Biggassmonkey: Ill have to try the fairy power spray too, to see which works the best, thanks.

Dood 515: I intend for them to be a mix of fast attack / deep strike, using the Land raider full of Veterans to punch a hole in the enemy defense and use the terms / assault marines / scouts to out flank the enemy and lay down some suppressive fire, so in short, yes. he he :D .

Update, however small it may be:

new parts are here for the LR (no weaponry yet) and the top hatch for the razorback so at least they will be in a decent state, i have also replenished my paint strippin' supplies and will start work tomorrow night, watch this space.

the parts (yay).

Bravo. I love watching fellow refurbishers/recyclers work. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I sure do wish wargaming was as popular around here as it must be over in the UK that one can find such things for sale at flea markets and garage sales. My pool of refurb work would be much larger!

Just a heads-up. Update imminent tomorrow when i have time to upload pics of the newly stripped LR (will edit this post). Meanwhile, i still need ideas for the weaponry on this thing as i am drawing a blank for good ideas atm. Could use dread arms possibly.
