Border Prince
I just wonder what the name of our primarch Leman Russ actually mean. I know that it fluffwise means "Leman of the Russ", but what do the name mean in real life. Most other primarchs have meaningful names that suits them. (Sanguinus command a legion with a blood theme, Lion El'Johnson command a legion we all know are a bit... :) you know... and Ferrus Manus and his marines have metal hands.) I guess Russ have something to do with the Rus, ( the vikings that setteled in modern Russia,) but what do Leman mean in such case? KiltedMarine
Not sure about "Leman," but the Russ were a particularly hard-nosed and bloody-minded tribe of Scandinavians who went East, settled along the Volga River, and eventually became the Russians. Also, Russ warriors were the mercenary Varangian Guards of the Byzantine Emperors. Note I say of the Emperors and not the Empire; they were a personal bodyguard, highly elite and personally sworn to the Emperor. Growler67
From Dictionary.com: Word Origin & History leman archaic for "sweetheart, paramour," from M.E. leofman (c.1205), from O.E. leof "dear" + man "human being, person." Originally of either gender, though archaic usage tends to limit it to women. Also –noun Archaic. 1. a sweetheart; lover; beloved. ******************************************************* So potentially it could mean he was the "beloved bodyguard" of the All Father. In the context of favored or favorite or being held dear to the Emperor, not in the amorous sense but instead more in the Lancelot/Arthur meaning. Just a WAG on my part. cherrboh
well, if it means "beloved" and russ refers to the scandinavian tribe, that would start to make some sense. he was found by hunters, that were out hunting huge f*** off wolves, and was loved by the king and the people so much that he became king. so beloved by the people of Russ. Combined with the Varangian Gaurd of byantine emperors as noted above would be the correct answer. Castlerook
But you could ask the same question about any of the primarchs names. The trouble is we think in terms of English when we talk about 40K (or in this case 30K), but we tend to forget that many of the worlds the Primarchs landed on have their own languages, not necessarily low gothic or a recognisable language. So each name could be translated to anything (How they got the Son of the Forest from El'Jonson is beyond me). Each Primarchs name had some meaning, be it through their own actions or the circumstances surrounding their founding, for all we know Leman Russ could mean "Beloved of the Wolves" (Been a while since I've read the Wolves IA so I can't remember if Russ was the name of the clan that found Russ), then again in the Fenrisian language it could mean "Hairy Child" Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178029-what-do-the-name-leman-russ-actually-mean/#findComment-2106335 Share on other sites

While in-universe their names are all linked to the languages of their worlds in reality they were named by a design team in england. The man that found him, or thta he was brought to when he was found, was the King of the Russ, a position which Leman Russ took over after the kings death. Hence, "beloved man of the Russ" Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178029-what-do-the-name-leman-russ-actually-mean/#findComment-2106750 Share on other sites

TeamLando
Leman's actually a surname too, here in Sweden o.O; Dunno what the "real" menaing is though, usually, the other wolves have Swedish/Scandinavian names, Like Ragnar for instance (That's actually MY middle name!, and it means, among other things, power of the gods, warrior, leader, so pretty fitting for young blackmane). Decoy
As a point, please remember that "Leman Russ" is a shortening of "Leman of the Russ". Taken in context, I would assume that this means "Beloved of the Russ", loosely translated to "King of the Russ", with Russ being the name of the tribe in question.
