First Impressions of the new Codex

Well as the thread title says, what do you guys think of the new Codex? At least those of you who have actually seen it.

I got a chance to flip through it some today at the local Games Workshop and I'll say that I'm surprised. I was really anticipating we'd lose most of our unique rules and character but well... we didn't. We still purchase wargear for Wolf Guard on an individual basis, we still assign them in limited numbers to other Packs, we still have Behind Enemy Lines and Fire Control and quite a few other things. Sure most of it has changed in some way but I can't realy begrudge that, some rebalancing after nearly 10 years is expected. So I still get my 16 man Blood Claw Packs, still get my 2 Power Fists in my Grey Hunters, still get to split fire with the Long Fangs. We also still get to take a ton of HQ's, we don't have too more and we can't take 6, 7, 8+ like we could before when the points got into Apocalypse levels but at that point you can use multiple FOC's anyway.

The Lone Wolf guys look interresting and it's fantastic to see Bjorn and Njal back (and in Termie armor too!). Grimnar and Blackmane are still cool, though I wish they were getting updated models, well at least Ragnar.

However I don't particularly like Lukas the Trickster, nor do I like the Wolf Riders. Canis I could have accepted as a unique dude on a rare and exceptionally large Wolf, but generic Riders push the bounds of plausibility waaaay too far. As for Lukas well... he looks like a gnome, and his fluff just seems wonky to me.

It's also good to finally see all 12 Wolf Lord's insignias in color and get a bit more information about them, and the artwork is for the most part exceptional.

Finally I'm glad the Blood Claw Assault Marines and Bikers are still around and the Assault Marines are now affordable points wise. I'll be picking me up a box of Assault Marines come October.

In conclusion... I'm pretty happy with the new Codex. For months I've been forcing myself not to get my hopes up, with the disasters of the Dark Angels and Blood Angels codexies, and the massive changes in Codex: Space Marines I was really anticipating more of a messed up outcome than this looks to be. If Canis and his nutty Wolf Riders are all I have to deal with then I think I'll survive and the Space Wolves will continue to be my favorite army and of course my favorite Chapter. So I can finally take a BIG sigh of relief and settle down for the wait to October with a smile.

But that's me, what about you guys?

Hang on you said two powerfists in your grey hunters. Does that include the attached wolf guard or is it a basic trooper?

Attatched Wolf Guard, interrestingly enough if I recall correctly 10 man Grey Hunters can actually take 2 Assault Weapons, but that means with a Wolf Guard the pack would be too large to fit in a Rhino BUT would be just fine for a Drop Pod or Land Raider. 2 Melta Guns, a combi-melta if the Wolf Guard still has the option and 2 Power Fists coming out of a Drop Pod seems like fun times.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to rip 2 Power Weapons or Power Fists off of my Blood Claws units but if that's the worst of my retro-fitting issues then I'm a happy camper. That's much better than the 2 months of arm replacements and unit shuffling and expanding it took to get my armies legal again when the new Codex: Space Marines came out. B)

to bad you cant do that as our pods and basic land raiders hold only 10 models lol.

In the new Codex? I would expect it would be 12 just like in C:SM, the other wargear was all brought up to match if I recall correctly.

But anyway regardless I'm not talking about rules and rumours but thoughts on the new Codex after first impression. Do you like it, do you not like it? Save rules queries for the the news/rumours thread.

I am happy to hear about affordability and utitliy of bikes and jump packs, though I do have a few worries of my own. It does kind of suck that we can no longer take as many HQs as we used to, since I for one loved having HQ choices to go with. I also understand that the Ven Dred is no longer an HQ which makes me sad for when I have to play small games (500 points make them fun)

If the wolves Ven Dred gets 'updated' and we do not get an iron clad or the equivalent we may be SOL. Yes yes I know there is always Bjorn, but I would rather not field a Dread than field Bjorn.

DP's and standard LR is back to 10 marines as this has been covered extensively.

Yes yes I know there is always Bjorn, but I would rather not field a Dread than field Bjorn.

Huh? Why, what's wrong with Bjorn? Is it his 270 point price tag?

I don't use characters, well not characters that are in the actual Canon. I hate doing it. No Bjorn, No Ragnar, No Logan. I don't want any of them in my army, and would prefer to simply get Ironclads. Though I would prefer to have Ven Dreds as an HQ without taking Bjorn, and have plenty of HQs, but I guess that is not in the cards.

As a marine player who has always like wolves and has been waiting a long time for the new codex i have some interesting questions to ask. Does anyone think that with the current trend of every new codex being better than the last do you think that this codex seems too good. I am not saying 100% as i haven't seen the codex but going off what has been posted it seems that say a grey hunter is totally superior to a codex mairne in all aspects, i mean a +1 attack due to an extra CC weapon plus potential for another one when being chared due to counterattack and being 1 point cheaper than a mainre. Able to take specials when not at full strenght, able to take multiple special weapons/power weapons. It seems that this codex has everything and is only missing ironclads, thunderfires and storms. Its like Dark angels/codex marines and then some?

So basically how/why is 10 superior grey hunters cheaper than 10 codex marines? Marines get the vet sarge but he is crap compared to everyone having bolt pistol and close comabt weapons. I mean if tacticals are charge they get max 12 attacks, wolves get something like 3x this.

Any thoughts?

the new codex being better then the last? Forgive me for not sticking to topic here but I must protest to that statement. The, without doubt best books atm is Orks, Eldar and Chaos. Daemons, Guards and Marines are newer than most of those but none are better. Same for fantasy that really used to be like that, but after 2-3 new releases after it there is still no book better than the daemons and the latest, the lizardmen barely make it to the top 50%. The only thing that really makes the newer books shine over the older ones is the troops section, but that's because of the diefference between 4th and 5th editions and I believe all races will have nice troops in the future.

Indeed the wolves are better than marines at close to medium range but vanilla marines are still better at range. The long fangs are very voulnerable since all of them has to have a heavy weapon. Regular marine armies can take some without so that casualties aren't too much of a problem. And marines can split their squads to better cope with wether its objectives or kill points being played as well as being able to fall bakc from close combat if they can gain on it.

I don't think the space wolf codex is broken, there might be a few things that's ridiculously good at what it does but hey, all armies have at least one such thing anyway. Lash-princes, bike council, vulkan he'stan, psycher battle squad, nob bikerz and so on...

1) The Vet Sgt. (for free) might not sound like much but the extra attack isnt half bad ,and pt of Ld is a welcome boom.

2) The free Special weapon (true its only a flamer but then its still good) and acces to heavy weapons and free ones at that (and 5pt Plasma Cannons. FIVE...POINT....PLASMA...Frigging....CANNONS!).

3)Most wolf players run rhino's or pods. This means that we can have the 2 special weapons, or the wolfguard (who I'm told can get very exspensive) and one special weapon. Or we can have both and not have a trasport (short of a land raider crusader, which will most likely be carrying bloodclaws).

4)Combat squads, the ability to hold two objectives with one troop choice or keep the heavy weapon static while everyone else goes hunting.

5)The lack of heavy weapons in troops chices means that to hold the home objective GH's have to sacrifise all their fire power to hold it.

6)Combat tactics, the ability to run away from combats you have no hope of winning is one of the greatest parts of the new marine codex (get charged by 30 'ard boyz and you'll see what I mean).

So on the face of it Marines got the raw deal but look deep and think about it they're about equal.

P.S. points are not only based upon the unit but how it fits within the rest of the army.

vens cant be HQs, no iron clads, and not having ragnar if you are counting on being in h2h is not the best of ideas. unless you are going to take a wolf lord with the saga that lets him act like ghetto ragnar.

we only get multiple assualt weapons, and our characters and HQ choices get expensive REALLY fast. at 10 base plus upgrades (the most expensive one being sagas at 35pts [which you can only have one but still]) troops need to be able to offset the fact that they are out numbered. so we get the best guns and gear to balance that out.

under he 3e dex, i was still using no less then 400 points on characters for every 750, now i can only take two if i wanted to, and make them über and not hurt my allocation of points to troopers. its a much better dex
