Devil Dog
Okay first of all, I am prepared to be called a bandwagoner or whatever the hell it is when people go OOH SHINY and grab the new thing because of the timing of this. Now I play normal marines and fluff wise, I don't like them. They are too by the book and even creating a DiY chapter didn't help the by-the-book feel I got from them. So I tried Black Templars, hated them, don't fit my playstyle, which is strange (they're assault and my other army is Daemons) then I tried Blood Angels, not much better, again didn't fit my playstyle. Completely ignored the Dark Angels codex because I REALLY HATE THEM, to me they are nancy-boys wearing dresses. So really I have 1 option left to try with my marines, Space Wolves. So basically what I'm asking here is what is it like to play Space Wolves, for a good list do you have to take a mix of units and use them exactly the same every time you play? (Devastators and Tacticals come to mind here, support fire/anti-tank and objective holders) And would Space Wolves fit my playstyle? I'm very aggressive, very reliant on mobility and need units which can change roles on the fly. (I hate dev squads in normal marines because they are always long range weapon platforms, but I love Dreads, tough, able to smash up alot in HtH and has some firepower for when it needs it) Also, I think I read somewhere that Space Wolves never wear helmets, is this true? cherrboh
it really depends on how you use an army mate. you could go with white scars or raven guard if you wanted speed. aside from wanting a mobile, assaulting army, is their anything else you might want from a team? just because you have a codex army, doesnt mean you have to play codex, if you know what i mean. you could try and max out all your choices for fast attack, take a few combat squads etc. drop pod a dreadnaught into close combat(furioso comes to mind) you can kit out devestators however you wish. its your army, at the end of the day. just because a book says so, doesnt mean you have to play that way. if you want someone to tell you to collect space wolves though, i wont do that. you need to make your own decision. perhaps youve spent so much time jumping between different chapters you havent spent enough time per chapter to fully understand what its like to play them. hendrik
and we do wear helmets, but once we're sure we can breath normally the helmets go out because it really hampers us because of our superior smell and hearing (eye sight too maybe, not sure) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178198-space-wolves-and-normal-marines/#findComment-2106811 Share on other sites
Wolfe
At the moment bud the truth is NO ONE really knows how the wolves are gonna play out. We have a brand new dex that no ones got hold of yet. The only thing that seems certain is that there will be several competitive builds and play-styles and so i'm sure you will find one that suits. My advice would be if you like the look/fluff/feel of the army then go with it, they really are awesome. If playstyle is all you are interested in i would wait a little while until enough games have been played by the rest of us to figure out what the crack is. Hope this helps. Peace out Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178198-space-wolves-and-normal-marines/#findComment-2106826 Share on other sites
Levitas
I used mechanized raven Guard for a while. You get used to the speed and it becomes hard to use slower units, but they still lack hard hitting power in assault. Wolves will have the best troop choice in the game. And the game is mostly about taking objectives with troops. But Wolves have some of the best fluff out of all the marines, and several books more than most chapters. i do agree that it takes quite a while to settle into a dex and learn all the tweaks and turns needed to make a decent list. So dex hopping probably wont help. You can always just proxy stuff and see what works. Hfran Morkai
and we do wear helmets, but once we're sure we can breath normally the helmets go out because it really hampers us because of our superior smell and hearing (eye sight too maybe, not sure) Which is why my Wolves are based in a cityfighting way but I claim the atmosphere is 0% oxygen. Basically I can't paint faces to save my life and didn't even like the old wolf heads so mine are all helmeted, however with the new kits I imagine repainting some of my current guys pads and redistributing them to different squads to mix in bare heads. And welcome to the Wolves whelp! You're a Wolf to me and I sincerely hope you find the beast settling within you. Warhorse47
Welcome to the Fang! I hope the Wolves will suit you, but before repainting, wait for the nex 'dex, pick it up and play it for a few months. Use the "counts as" rule for your force. Then, if you don't like the Wolves, you've not wasted a bunch of time and cash. If you do, by then you will know what you like and can rebuild accordingly. Like someone said before, no one really knows how these guys will play out with the new codex coming; but, from what I have seen of the codex in my local GW, I am pretty darn excited. I think SW may fit your playstyle of an aggressive and fluid force. A wolf lord's staple unit is a Grey Hunters pack and these guys are very flexible. They are equiped with bolter, BP, and CCW. They can either stand and shoot from midrange, maybe holding an objective, or they can whip out their BP and CCW on the following turn and provide a pretty good assault support. And with counterattack they remain a pretty defensible unit. And our dreads are awesome and provide a lot of character. Bjorn the Fell-Handed is back as a character and he is a beast to say the least. My favorite part about the SW's is that they are the most human of any space marine chapter. They are not like the Smurf Marines that just obey orders; SW's care about the people in Empire they protect not just because the Emperor says so. And their special characters all have background stories showing their bravery and character. When you get the chance, read the story about Logan's champion, i forget his name. It sums up what it means to be a spacewolf. WG Vrox
They are equipped with bolter, BP, and CCW Does anyone know if they will come standard equipped with frags? My favorite part about the SW's is that they are the most human of any space marine chapter Not true, the Salamander force actually live amongst the people they protect, I would go as far as to say they are the most humanistic of the space marine chapters. But as for who is the most charismatic and hairy, we win by a land slide. The SW value bravery. and will fight to protect honourable humans who have shown courage etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178198-space-wolves-and-normal-marines/#findComment-2107506 Share on other sites
The emperors chosen
Completely ignored the Dark Angels codex because I REALLY HATE THEM, to me they are nancy-boys wearing dresses. Thats all I need to hear :P , but yah, we still don't know enough about it( the dex) to make an accurate reply, but from what I've heard, you will be able to make several varied builds, depending on the characters you take, like an all wolf guard force if you take Logan(i think)., anyway, welcome P.S. remember, we aren't just viking, we also have barbarian( twice as cool ;) ) For Russ! Jonas Stromclaw
Completely ignored the Dark Angels codex because I REALLY HATE THEM, to me they are nancy-boys wearing dresses. What, another pup who already growls at dress angels? Is there a sale or something? Welcome to the Wolves laddie! By the looks of things we'll get a really diverse army as far as play style goes (Phil Kelly wrote the codex Yay!) and the new models look awesome. You like lads who do things up close and personal, look no further.
