Deathwing commission WIP

This here's a WIP thread for a commission I'm doing.

It'll consist of:

1 Landraider - magnetised to allow later conversion to redeemer/crusader variant, doors hinged.

2 Deathwing Terminator squads - magnetised for weapons variety

1 Deathwing Assault Terminator squad - magnetised for weapons variety

1 Belial - customised from metal Terminator Captain.

So far, I've cleaned up the Land Raider (one I'd not quite started) to a point where it'll make a good finish - you'll notice some spots of paint here and there, but they'll be overpainted easily, magnetised the lascannon sponson and hinged the doors. The side ramp also has a pin and magnet to hold it closed. The top hatches didn't really lend themselves to swappability, but they're left loose so they can be swapped with other vehicles as required.

5 pairs of magnets were needed to hold the sponsons firmly enough. I'm gonna need to buy more... Note that the ones on the raider's hull have a splotch from a permanent marker on them - always mark one end of the stack whenever you take a magnet - this helps make sure you don't end up with them repelling rather than holding!

Now I'm just waiting on another 2 veterans boxes for Deathwing parts and some Forgeworld bits...

Internals preshaded by airbrush with shadow grey, then brought up to just off-white. Pure white used for extreme highlights.

The engine is black drybrushed tin bitz, then drybrushed boltgun, washed black with detail picked out in vallejo old gold.

Seating still needs a drybrush.

just a quick question usually in all GW pics land raider mounts lascannon and hurricane bolters in the back position and use the formounts only for crusader version, how do you plan to manage this with hinged doors? or maybe i'm simply wrong and you can put lascannon in the front?

btw i really like the painting untill now :) go on!

Erm, you can mount the lascannon in the front. Like on the box art. And the photos in the first post. :-)

I prefer the cannons in the rear mount as otherwise with the side door open you can see the ammo feed for the bolters obscuring the through-view to the displays on the other side, and also where there should blatantly be a gunner's seat / commander's seat for the cupolas... or hanging legs...

Actually I just overtightened the wires for the hinging on one of the side doors and snapped the hinge. :-( Now I have to make a new hinge...

Yeah, the new one seems to be holding, but just in case things get over tight once there's paint on, I've ordered a spare.

Has anyone else noticed that the Land Raider seems to come without gunner's legs? I've had to order a set of these too... Hmmm...

Oh, and a pic of the screens, as someone elsewhere asked:

Wow you have alot of flat lined marines there. :whistling: I did the same thing with my LR's including this GK one. Except I decided to go an extra step and allow the tank to split apart as well. Metal teeth glued to one side cut from sheet metal and then slot drilled with magnets glued in to grab the teeth.

And then I added metal strips to the top of the track section and magnets to the roof of the Raider so the whole thing facets down together.

And now its a LR godhammer or crusader and when my DA's and GK's get redeemers it'll be that as well.

This way all the painting you did on the interior will be easily seen when done. And it makes for cool wrecked-effects. :pirate:

Sorry sinc emy english is all but perfect maybe my question was missunderstanded, i know that you "can" mount lascannon in front or back position, the real question was "is it legal?" :eek

Yes, it's legal. The rules make no assumptions about where on a model sponsons are mounted.

As this is a commission, I'm not taking too much time in planning complex assembly tricks like a splitting hull. The magnetising and hinged doors are as far as I'm going.

Decided to play with some GS for a bit. Here's a WIP on the Belial I'm doing as part of this commission:

My GS-fu is not too strong, but this should look OK painted.

Some more WIP on the Land Raider:

Basically, it's just some preshading over the white undercoat and a mid tone of Kommando Khaki. It'll get lightened up to pretty much the tone of the sponsons, and then have several oil washes to tone it.

Bone is now done. Tomorrow will come DA green recognition stripes on front and rear. Should look good.

And after a bit of a panic due to accidentally having the pressure set too high and having to fix a massive leak under the mask for the stripes, they're neat enough to carry on:

The next step is finishing off and weathering the internals - the sliding doors, ramp, tool rack and cover before glueing the track halves together and the tracks on.

The chassis is now assembled, pretty much, which means I can work on the weathering and shading, and start bringing up the contrast with washes and some blushing work (very subtle sort of drybrush effect done with airbrush and *really* thin paint). Sponge method weathering applied to doors, and inside floor to chip it up. This will also be done on the outside of the tank once I have the basic colour contrast where I want it, before filter coats.
