Old dog, New tricks

I have been lurking around the "Fang" long enough to know that some guys are going to have their own "opinions" on the new dex, and wondered what they really make of what is likely or what they know will be in it. Some even refused to really be drawn on the matter till it was in there hands, though it does not seem like that time is far off now, and it is undeniably confirmed as being released.

Does it live up to expectations? How do you think it will effect what you have now and a style of play that you have gotten used to over the last almost 10 years? (I know that none have gotten to use it yet, but I am sure that just from looking at whats there, somethings would have greatly changed) and lastly, how well do you think that you will manage with the new rule set? When the book hits the shelves, how many may as well be Blood Claws for all the changes and new tactics that will be on offer.

Or

Do you think that it changes nothing much? Are the SW still the SW they have always been?

Thought and Opinions? Anthing I missed?

Hmmm, well, I've been following the rumors for a while now, and got to spend about an hour with the codex in hand at the LGS yesterday. To answer your first question - yes, it did live up to my expectations. I didn't have time to get through all of the fluff, but the parts I did read were fine, and I loved all of the new artwork/sketches. I'm also very pleased with the army list itself, although there are a few surprises and a few disappointments.

Specifically, we've got the decreased transport size of Drop Pods, and standard Land Raiders - this has already been discussed to death, so no need to go into that again here, but it was a bit of a dissapointment for me, if only for the sake of inconsistency across lists for the same equipment/vehicles which I find to be highly annoying. Other disappointments include 1) No Mark of Wulfen in Blood Claws (whereas it is available for Sky Claws and also I believe Swift Claws); 2) No Wolf Guard Pack Leader for Sky Claws (whereas it is available for Blood Claws and Swift Claws); 3) No Frost Blade for a Wolf Lord or Battle Leader in TDA; and 4) Taking the Saga of the Hunter gives Outflank, but not Behind Enemy Lines (the improved Wolf Scout version of Outflank), so a character with this saga is on his own, which is just rediculous to me.

However, despite these flaws (and the others that I am sure will continue to emerge), I am still very happy with everything else, and know that we'll have the potential to craft a very powerful force. Here are a few of the positives: 1) Cheap Grey Hunters (15 pts) with excellent weapons load and great upgrade options; 2) Cheap Wolf Guard (18 pts); 3) Cheap Wolf Guard Terminators that come standard with Power Weapons (33 pts); 4) Cheap Sky Claws (18 pts) that can take a special weapon (Flamer, Meltagun, or Plasmagun), in addition to a Plasma Pistol, special close combat weapon, and Mark of the Wulfen; 5) Swift Claws now come with both a Bolt Pistol and CCW, which means one more attack in close combat than they used to get; 6) Excellent (albeit expensive) Special Characters (hello Ragnar, welcome back Bjorn and Njal).

Now, on to how the new Codex affects my personal army. I've spent quite a bit of time in front of the model cabinet thinking through the changes, and swapping models around, mulling over the changes that will be required/desired, and here is what I've come up with so far. Fortunately for me, I'll probably only have to add/change about 10 of models to have what I want/need. Most of what I already had I will be able to continue to use in my updated army lists, and very few of my current models will get retired.

As far as tactics/strategy, I see very little change required there as well. Space Wolves have been an excellent close quarters combat (within 12") army for the past 10 years, and that remains true in the new version. By gaining the "ultragrit" loadout, gaining the option for two special weapons, and maintaining Counterattack, our Grey Hunters are probably the best and most versatile Troops in the game (and at a very reasonable cost, too).

Rhino size is the same as C:SM. It is 10 and has always be 10.

Oops, you are absolutely correct, got sloppy when trying to quickly answer the question. Have edited my original post above to remove Rhinos from the list of reduced transport vehicles.

MotW is rubbish 1/2 the time you get =/< the amount of attack you'd normally get.

I beg to differ: Average roll over time for a d6 is 3.5, so even if you go conservative and round down to 3, your average number of attacks on the charge and countercharge will be 5 (d6 +1 for MotW +1 for the Charge), and these are Rending attacks, which (although not as good as it used to be) can still be quite valuable. The only issue is whether the MoW is worth the extra 15 points you spend to get it. I submit to you that for a Pack that is going to sit on an objective it is probably not worthwhile, but for a dedicated assault Pack it most certainly is worth it.

i looked over the codex earlier today. and was impressed. there isn't much in my current army that is going to really need changing (i need to loss a few power fists, but i will just have to make up for it by getting more packs  ). there wasn't much i didn't really like. it looked more like the old codex, just upgraded and some new stuff added.

my first big concern was when i saw the points for equipment for HQs and WG. it seemed high to me. but as i looked through the 'dex i noticed that it seemed to even out in different parts of the 'dex.

so IMHO the wolves are the wolves with a few things that need to prove themselves to me.
