Angels Sanguine: Space Hulk

Here’s my first completed marine from the SH box. I intentionally wanted to keep with the original sculpts & right shoulder iconography but I can’t help but place them in my favorite of all marine Chapters. I bought an extra set of SH marine sprues for conversions but that’s for another day. For now, completing one, unmodified, fully painted set of SH models is the immediate goal.

Side Note: Now if GW would just give BA some real rules again I could resurrect the whole army. I choose to remain hopeful so maybe that will come one day soon. In the meantime, I’ll have a good time painting these up.

Why does it seem that everyone can paint their SH minis EXTREMELY, i mean EXTREMELY, good?

Merely the good fruits of actively participating in the PC&A forum. At least that certainly has helped me.

Well, in all fairness... OMG has always been a fairly amazing painter.

I’d strike the always and the amazing but graciously accept the fairly part of that statement. (Fairly what I'm not sure.) And thank you.

have you thought about doing the gems on the red side a different colour, like black, so they stand out more?

That’s a very interesting idea. I’ve never really tried to paint an onyx/obsidian/opal effect into a gemstone before. I’ll have to think about that.

Thanks for the comments all. -OMG

Wow! It's amazing! Seriously!

OMG's Angels are superb, I like all of them, When I painted my own Blood Angles, I looked to OMG's minis as an example of how I should paint.

Great work! I'm thrilled to imagine how they'll look when you make some conversions!

Here's the next marine. The front shot is pretty bad so I'll replace it here in short order.

Certainly. I’ll send you a quick PM unless anyone else is really interested. We do have quite a few, “How to do such & such a color” tutorials out there.

Cheers, -OMG

I'd be greatly interested also

Cheers

**Edit - actually, I'd be interested in your whole Angels Sanguine technique!!**

Right then – nothing particularly special but here’s the basic idea.

Since I prime white, I first lay down a near-black base coat. I use a mixture of primarily Citadel & Vallejo paints; either way I mix the darkest Black (Chaos or otherwise) 1:1 with Codex (or London) Grey. That should give you a color that’s just a shade lighter than your blackest black. The idea being that it gives you some middle ground to begin darkening shadows & lightening highlights.

For the recesses, I use either a watered down application of the blackest black color and/or Citadel’s Badab black ink wash. I do this with a very fine tipped brush to only darken the areas that need it. But still, if you make any mistakes it’s very easy to go back over it with the “almost black” color as needed.

I then highlight progressively with the Codex/London grey moving to Vallejo’s Sky Grey. For example, Add more Codex grey to the 1:1 Black/Grey mix, i.e. 2:1 or 3:1. The next layer, add a bit of Sky grey till you’re using only Sky grey. A total of 3-4 total layers are all that’s needed.

There’s actually two goals at this point, one to provide a natural highlight and the other to create a worn/weathered look. Be careful not to cover too much of the surface as you highlight. As in, I use a small, flat edged brush to further control where the color hits the model. If you highlight too much you wind up moving the black color to more like charcoal. So take care to just to only lighten up the leading edge.

That’s really about it. If you’re interested there are plenty of examples of WIP pics in my blog. The link’s in my signature.

I hope you find that helpful. –OMG
