jakehunter52
Last weekend I was fortunate to participate in the Seattle Heart of Fire Tournament hosted by Fire & Sword in Seattle. The turnout was lower than expected, 24 participants, but understandable due to the PAX convention and a GW tournament during the same weekend. I'm getting around to the battle report now cause I have been busy with Army issues. And I apologize, I do not have photos to share cause I left my camera at my friend's place back in Seattle and am currently trying to retrieve it. Scoring was done by primary objectives (either objective or kill point based for 14, 9 or 6pts), secondary objectives (varying from game to game for 6pts) and tertiary objectives (also varying for 2pts). The terrain was preset for each table (a lot of tables had the GW modular board) but for the most part was very different. And here is my list: HQ GKGM- 399pts Holocaust and Psycannon, Terminator Retinue (4) with Holocaust (yes, you can take it twice) Troops PAGK (8)- 226pts Justicar with Targeter PAGK (8)- 226pts Justicar with Targeter PAGK (8)- 226pts Justicar with Targeter SoB (16)- 240pts Meltagun x2, Vet Superior with Book and Evisorator Fast Attack Serephim (8)- 246pts Inferno Pistols x2, Vet Superior with Book and Evisorator Heavy Support GK Dreadnought- 148pts TLLC, ML, EA, Smoke GK Dreadnought- 138pts TLLC, EA, Smoke Total: 1850pts First Game: Was against a Salamanders player, had He'stan with Tac Squad in LR Redeemer, 4 combat squads, two razorbacks with TLLC, rhino, Devisator squad, Dreadnought in Drop Pod, two landspeeders DS and two combat bikes in reserve. Everything that could have a melta or flamer did. Dawn of War deployment with three objectives in each player's deployment zone. Could only score objectives in opponent's deployment zone. He went first. Most the the terrain was on the side and most of his vehicles were on my left so I ended up stacking on the right with the exception of my serephim on the far left and a squad of PAGK and Terminators towards the center. First turn he dropped dread which did nothing suprisingly and I popped it with my sisters. His razorbacks proved to be an annoyance throughout the game, destroying both of my dreads in the end. My serephim moved up, faithed invo saves, took a lot of fire but only lost a few. They shot, immobilzed a razorback, got locked in combat and jumped back to the center. Turn two the Sali moved the LR up and got in combat with PAGK in 3 to which I countered with my Termies. Tried to insta kill He'stan for a take-that-sucka moment but he saved (darn 3+ invo) but I did make him run (cause it was just him and a sergeant) and his turn too because of the serephim jumping towards them (but that was the best they did since they just immobilized the LR, SoB had to finish it off and in retrospect should of continue chasing them to keep them away from an objective). The rest of my army did the shoot and scoot up the right, mostly devastating a rhino and the squad in it. Turn 5, he had moved a combat squad to claim an objective, my termies and Serephim were wiped out with LC fire and he had DSed the Landspeeder ontop of the objective (losing to one to dangerous terrain) and my failing to destroy it with melta and stormbolter shots. Loss 1-0, no secondary objectives (kill lots with Elites) and no tertiary. Great game that came down to the last turn where my bad rolling kept me from the draw and a possible win. Second Game: Eldar player, full unit of wraithguard, Wraithlord, two units of pathfinders, a unit of guardians, a falcon with farseer in it and I forget what else. Really, this was my most disappointing game because they guy was making a lot of simple mistakes (like putting his pathfinders in open ground) and his army composition was really wonky. Five objectives in total, one in each deployment zone and three in the middle. I held my serephim and Terminators in reserve and once again stacked on the right. I got first turn and obliterated both pathfinder units. His stuff moved up a bit but didn't do much. I then obliterated the Guardian unit and took control of two objectives. Serephim came in and destroyed the falcon but made some bad saves and ran off the board. I tried my hand at assaulting the Wraithguard with the terminators but didn't make the difficult terrain test and got shot down to the GM with two wounds. To give him credit, he rushed in and killed four the those beasts but alas, not enough. Not killing those wraithguard kept my other squads back from the objectives for fear of being zapped too. Ended with win 2-1, no secondary (keep FA alive), no tertiary. I'll have to post the other three games tomorrow. Going to bed. jakehunter52
Nice write up so far. How'd the Holocaust work for you? Not at all. I will admit a large reason why I had so much fun was because I was playing with quality players, people who could look at a list for 15 seconds and see what they could exploit, what they needed to quickly kill and have the battle planned before any dice are rolled. I am not at that level and almost every battle felt like scrapping just to stay alive (which is very much with the 40k theme) and playing my best and learning so much. One of those "I know for next time" moments was because a lot of times I would hold my GM in reserve but then walk him on, rather than DS and so he never got to combat. Except with He'stan. And I did forget, I did do double holocaust on He'stan and the tac squad, worked fairly well. Was really hoping to use it against an ork or IG player but no luck. I would say totally worth it though because it is SCARY along with doing a lot of potential damage to the top tier armies. Third Game: Was against Mech DA. Landraider Crusader with Librarian, Chaplain and Command squad inside, two vindicators, two rhinos, four razorbacks, 2 with TLLC and 2 w/ HB and Dread with PC and ML. A few combat squads inside razorbacks. Mission was killpoints and deployment of spearhead. Was some area terrain to put troops in but absolutely nothing to hide vehicles. I deployed first. Right from the get go, I knew that I was in trouble. Problem was I didn't know how much and thus came the worst beating I think I have ever received. I put everything but the SoB, a squad of PAGK and my Dreads in reserve (figuring that he would have to advance to me and don't want to expose self). My SoB would hold out and attempt to melta the LR when it move up and the GK were there if he decided to assault. Dreads would get first round of shooting. 1st mistake: Should of put everything in reserve because he stole the initiative and then proceed pour both vindicators, HB razorbacks and LR into them, taking them down to 6 and destroying one of the dreads. 2nd mistake: My turn, I don't move, stun a razorback and push my jaw back up. Then he pours more fire into the sisters, destroying all but two and then into the GKs and other Dread. After that, it became a slow whiddling down of my units as they came onto the board and me crying on the inside. I eventually realized I should of played agressive with my GKs and got them into assault range of one of the Vindicator and immobilized it but was finished off by the stormbolter on it of all things. I was tabled by the beginning of turn 5. I felt so horrible by the end of the game that I had made such dumb mistakes but now I can recognized that and account for it in future games. End of day 1. Fourth Game: Once again, DA but Deathwing. Four squads with various heavy weapons , special character in one squad DSing, librarian in another, tech marine and three dreads, one with TLLC ML, one with TLAC and ML, and lastly MM and DCCW. Deployment kinda like in Apocalypse where it is at a slant, mission was three objectives with the secondary being kill the opponent's HQs, one in each deployment and one in the center. ALOT of trees scattered around, my objective was in the trees and the other two were out in the open. He got first turn. I started out plopping my SoB on my objective and a PAGK unit next to them and everything else in reserve. He starts two squads in separate woods and the other two in reserve. Two Dreads are close to his objective w/ the tech and the MM dread is between the wooded squads. He shoots frag missles at my sisters and I can't make a save for the love of the Emperor (like 33% saved) but they sick around. All but one PAGK squad and GM squad come in. The next few turns consist of my PAGK and his terminators having stormbolter duels back and forth in the woods and both of dreadnoughts shooting all they have at that one dread but not doing ANYTHING to it which was so frustrating since I could be using that on terminators. Oh, and the serephim came on, booking straight to the other dreads, faithing invo saves but once again, against those two dreads, I lose all but three serephim. And they run. Awesome. But I faith them to fearless and move them to the center of the board to kill the dread. Then finally his SC and squad drop real close to my objective but that is bad for me cause my PAGK we now committed to contesting the central objective and couldn't support the SoB. So I had as many GKs fire at that squad, getting it down to just the SC and two fists. But then he charges and kill the whole squad except the Vet. She cleaves one in half and stays stubborn. Now, I charge in another grey knight squad and finish them off (and puts the wounds on the PAGK which means I still have two scoring units. YEA!) getting me one secondary. However, three other problems arise: My GK going for the central objective were wiped out by the librarian's pskyer power and the dreadnought which I had epically failed to stop has now gotten into more epic combat with my GM and his other termie squad walked on his objective, putting me at a loss at them moment. Well, the dread had killed all but GM but he had maked a couple rounds worth of invo saves and bashed away, albeit unsuccessfully. Well, my serphim were luckily there with the Vet and she charges in and finally slays the beast. I then lay into the Librarian and Termie squads with...literally everything that I had and killed them. My one mistake though was not taking adavantage of my PAGK squad that had killed the SC, if I had remembered to run them, I could of gained the central objective. That's another lesson I learned: Always play your hardest at a tournament. It will help you remember things and make you a better player. But instead, it ended with a draw with a couple more points for me. Very well fought. Sorry, tired again. Another intense game recap tomorrow. jakehunter52
Good reports. Seems you enjoyed playing codex DH. ;) Thanks. I did enjoy playing my DH and I think a lot of people there we're glad to see them getting played. They are hard to handle and after two years, I still feel like I have a long way to go. However, I've fallen for their imagery and what they stand for and even their play style, wading until the time is right to deal the killer blow, just has done it for me. Final Game: First I got to say that this guy's army was painted to an amazing degree of awesomeness: An eldar army based around the Joker. The colors were just so bright and crisp, not doubt due to the fact that he did three coats for each layer and there were usually around four in any given area, that it made it jump out at you and go wow. He won best painted. As far as the list, it consisted of two units of guardians w/ hvy weapon, unit of rangers, fire dragons in a falcon, banshees with a farseer in a falcon, a wraithlord, 3 warwalkers w/ ML and Starcannons and the Lord of Jokes himself, Eldrad with the rangers. It was objectives with one in each quarter and spearhead deployment. Terrain consisted of hills in opposite corners with buildings ontop (on my right on my side), several mine field terrain on my left quarter and a patch of trees in the last quarter. I got second turn. Now before I set up, I asked if he wanted the minefields to count as dangerous terrain. He said no, didn't want to deal with it and instead be just difficult. Then I asked if he wanted it to be area terrain then and he said yes. Then I stated to him that it would probably be most advantageous to me and said it was fine cause there were still like rocks and stuff in there with the mines. This was important for later on. He surprisingly deployed everything on the field, the guardians on either side of the building, rangers in it, Wraithlord near it, War walkers below it and the falcons behind it. I then held everything in reserve except my dreads which I hid in the building. His first turn he just moved up and then I shot through the door in the building but no luck. He moved up some more and shot at my dred and stunned it. Then everything but a PAGK squad came in. I decided to do a dash for the left objective since there was area terrain but got kinda stuck on the difficult terrain coming down so didn't make it as far as I would of liked. Everything else kinda bunched up and waited for the falcons since they were still running around. A couple of more stuns. Then his turn and a bloody one at that. His war walkers opened up on the GKs and thanks to Guidance, hit and wounded with EVERYTHING. Lost half the squad. Then had one of his falcons and wraithlord fire on my sisters and they still couldn't make saves. And I think he destroys one of my dreadnoughts now with the other falcon because it has now circled around to the back right quarter and behind the building. My turn but then he says that he has a problem with the minefields being counted as area terrain and should only get a 4+ if in it, not behind it. I thank myself for clarifying earlier and explain to him that it would have totally changed by strategy and the whole war walker thing and so we carry on but it definitely made an akward tension between us. I also end up booking the GK in the field anyway since I decide they are going to assault the walkers next turn and my other PAGK come in to reinforce my objective. Now it was my turn to be bloody. I scoot my dread out from the building and blast the falcon out of the sky. I fly over my serephim and meltapistol it but had to reroll my penetration rolls because he had the "nothing more than str 8 and melta doesn't count" upgrade on it which I didn't know. So instead of a single glance, it went to double pens and explode. More awkwardness ensues. And there are the banchees with farseer in the debris. And so I hit them with every stormbolter I have and get it down to one banshee and the farseer with a wound. Then I assault then with invoed serephim but surprisingly (and luckily) only kill the banshee. And I assault the walkers and destroy two of them while losing two myself. Now everything had turned super desperate for both of us. I only had one objective either my troops weren't in a position to reliably hold it or reach it before the end of the game. And his banshees were not only his favorite unit (very cool green hair btw) but the linchpin to his strategy. Not only that, most everyone else had finished so there was the beginnings of a crowd forming so we were both just...gahhh! So he starts moving his Rangers out of cover and begins to conga line a guardian squad from his objective to the back right one. He also advances his fire dragons who are pretty much out of the fight but want revenge. The other guardian squad then moves up to the walker combat and then charge in. I put my attacks on them and kill a few and barely lose both PAGK (yeah, taking three saves on each but still, only failed 1 save each!). He consolidates 6 inches and conga lines with them too. I kill off the farseer. My turn I pour fire into the back guardian squad and kill a few, kill a few fire dragons with my dread and back PAGK squad. I move my SoB squad hopelessly to the objective and move my Serephim to the end of the conga line and assault it. Worked perfectly because I was not only able to make him pile in out of the objective but killed off the squad through overrun. Now, we had to roll to see if it went on, at which it was a tie but just barely (I was contesting his home objective) which it did. He then absolutely massacred my Serephim and his rangers tore up my SoB (understandable since there were only 6 or so left) and made them run and the fire dragons got their revenge on my dread. My turn I finished off the other guardian squad and run my Termie squad (not a whole lot else to do at this point). And then the game ends. 1-1. A draw. Except the tertiary objective (secondary was to have two scoring units on one objective). Kill the opponent's HQ. Which I did and he didn't. Moral victory for me. At the end, based on pure generalship, I placed about middle of the pack. Not bad considering I had completely revised my list before attending, hadn't played regularly for about 6 months and that I had totally expected to lose every game. Best weekend of my life...so far. Thanks for reading. I'll see what I can do for pics later on. FunkyEntropy
I fly over my serephim and meltapistol it but had to reroll my penetration rolls because he had the "nothing more than str 8 and melta doesn't count" upgrade on it which I didn't know. So instead of a single glance, it went to double pens and explode. Looks like the eldar player either didn't know his own rules very well or was trying to pull a fast one on you. Chances are he had the holofield upgrade, which is why you had to roll twice on the penetration table and take the lower result. [edit]Or he wanted you to reroll because you didn't take out the extra d6 for the melta rule as per the wave serpent energy field and he gambled that you wouldn't penetrate at all with str 8+d6. Unlucky him.[/edit] As to the rest of the stuff that he said applied, I can't find anything in the Eldar codex even remotely similar to what he was saying. There's only one rule of that I know of that says that meltas don't get their extra d6 for armor pen - the Living Metal rule for Monoliths. Similarly, I can't think of any rules off the top of my head that say any str above 8 counts as str 8. The closest thing would be the Lance special rule, but that modifies the vehicles armor value and has nothing to do with weapon strength. [edit] Completely forgot about Wave Serpent Energy fields, which does exactly that. :P Need more coffee. But even so, you said he was using Falcons, correct? They can't get energy fields. All in all I'm completely baffled by this. Either you assumed they were falcons, or he told you they were falcons when they were actually wave serpents, or something. Anyway, coffee.[/edit] Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178589-tshift-battle-report-now-with-pictures/#findComment-2115413 Share on other sites

Should of remembered because they carried 10 models but he didn't stick the little pointy bits in the front (see pic) but meh, can tell I don't play against eldar much. And yea! Coffee!
