Wip Blood Angels Update 1-12-10

Recommended Posts

I wanted to show the progress on my last two Veteran Assault Squad guys. I am almost ready to start using the washes on them. I still however have to work down to scab red before I do that though so I probably have about 5 or 6 more layers to add to them. Anyhow here is what I have so far.

Primed with grey primer

Here is the first coat of dwarf flesh

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01643.jpg

This is after about 3-5 coats of Dwarf Flesh.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01646.jpg

Once I hit this point I start to ad a little red to the dwarf flesh, then I leave a little bit of the edges. I start to work my way down to the shadows and the deepest of reds.

Here is the first bit of red added to the mix.

From this point I just add more blood red to the mix until the shadows start to appear.

Here is about 7-8 coats of blood red /dwarf flesh... around 60/40 and a whole bunch of water. I paint on a wet pallet as well.

That's it for now. I want to take this up until the guy is completely finished. Enjoy.

Here is the latest updates to my vet assault marine

This is the last of the red paint I will be putting on the model. It is a rough mix of scab red/red gore/dwarf flesh and a good amount of water so the paint is extremely thin. I start in the shadows and then go over the entire model. Most of the paint stays in the shadows and the mix tints the other parts of the model.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01657.jpg

Here is the first wash of leviathan purple. I thin it out to about 50/50 purple and water. I apply this wash to the entire model. I will do this about two or three times putting most of the wash in the cracks and shadow spots of the model.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01659.jpg

After the purple I start to use the sepia wash. I take this wash straight from the bottle and apply it to the entire model, making sure to keep the majority of the wash in the shadows. I do this many times until the red starts to feel right.

Here is the first sepia wash

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01662.jpg

Here he is after about 7-8 washes.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01667.jpg

And finally here is the last sepia wash. From here I start with the Devlan mud.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01670.jpg

After the mud I start on the other parts of the model. One thing I like about this technique is that at this stage I can afford to be messy.

Here is the marine with some coats of Devlan mud. Again, I try to keep the wash to the darkest parts of the marine

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01675.jpg

Here is a comparison of a marine without any washes next to the current marine. I post this so you can all see that the 'finished' product will be a deep red.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01682.jpg

Finally I have started to paint the other parts of the marine. The principal is the same. Work from the higlights to the shadows very slowly. This is what I have done with the helmet. The weapons will have some metallic paint on them, I haven't arrived at that point yet.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01683.jpg

I am still debating as to weather I will try the glowing eyes effect. I am leaning that way. I still have some more highlights to add to the helmet. The helmet is a bit different because I paint yellow in more of a traditional way in that i will shade then bring highlights to the model once the shading is done. I don't usually do this with the red.

I hope you all enjoy!

I am getting quite frustrated with the eyes. I do not yet know what to do with them. I don't think they pop right now so I thought i might add a glowing effect. Or maybe I should bring the blue up a bit brighter. I don't know yet. It could be that the way the model is posed doesn't lend itself well to viewing the eyes all to well. If I stand him on the tabletop they don't show to well. In any case here is the progress so far.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01696.jpg

The eyes have me frustrated and I have had dark thoughts.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01697.jpg

Enough about the eyes though. I have put the hammer down as well. The yellow on the helmet was done a bit differently than the red. I started with bad moon yellow. I gave it about 3-4 coats of that. From there I gave it a little wash of the sepia. I really like that wash. I apply this to the entire helmet but I give the most of it to cracks and such. Then I use the Devlan mud in the deepest shadows. I actually highlight the yellow though. So I use the sunburst yellow on large parts of the helmet. Give it about 2-3 coats working up this time. Then hit the edges with badmoon yellow then badmoon yellow mixed with white until I'm happy with it. I like the yellow to be kind of grainy and brown and I think the brown is the common thread that ties the model together. At least I hope it comes across that way.

About glazing and such, all that I have learned really I have learned from reading the posts of LunchBox and Starks. You should check them out in the Librarium. There are others as well. Picster is an exceptional painter as well, OMG, and others. The B&C will guide you.

Nice! A great method with smooth results. I think the eyes are fine as they are. I've never understood why people paint them glowy anyway - they are lenses, not coloured lightbulbs - its not logical to have a lightbulb in front of the lens you're supposed to be looking through.

Latest update on the Veteran Assault troopers. I am putting the Thunderhammer guy up on the board as I would like some comments on the hammer itself. I don't know if the effect is working but I am having a hard time trying to get it to work over that skull. I am alright with the result but only partly so.

Here is the Thunderhammer guy

Here is another view of the hammer

Here is the chainsword wielding trooper. I am so close to finishing him. Just some touch up work on some bits here and there and the bases of course. Hopefully they will both be finished by weeks end.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01718.jpg

I am going to blend the highlights on the bolt pistol and probably add a blood drop to it as well. The backpacks will be both red and black. Still haven't decided on a good base yet. It has to be kind of muddy as I use 'mud' on all my troops.

Here is another view.

I am pretty much finished with these two guys. I still have yet to base them properly but I'm waiting to do them all at once and I still have plenty more guys to do still. I don't know what I'm going to paint next. I might do an assassin to take a break from marines for awhile. I think next time I work on my Blood Angels again it will be to get the tacticals going so I can actually play a game. I still have all those mark I and mark II vets to do yet. Anyhow here are my latest two WIPS

This is the chainsword guy. Here are a couple of views of him.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01736.jpg

Here is another view of him. The chapter symbol is freehand and I went back and did those on all my vets. I will do that to all my troops from now on. It's a bit of a pain still but I am happy with result. What do you think?

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01737.jpg

Here is the Thunderhammer guy. I named him Varus and if you look close enough I wrote that on that little scroll thing on his left shoulder. A question for all of you, does the thunderhammer look like it's on fire or does it look like a power weapon? I don't know if the effect I'm going for is coming across.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01738.jpg

Another view of Varus.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01739.jpg

Well there they are. I will post here with my next troops. I don't know what it will be yet.

i wish i owned that hammer :D i went looking around the home for some thing rusted, to use as reference for an orc warlord i was painting, and didn't have anything rusted anywhere! your hammer would be perfect though, google images is fine, but nothing beats holding and having a good close inspection.

oh, and the vet looks great :)

Looks very good, Your technique interests me, and the results cannot be argued with.Might have to try it out some time. I do have a suggestion, Judging by the script on Brother Varus' arm you are good at freehanding letters, why not freehand something on the chainsword guy's chainsword?

Looking great!

As previously stated, that is an intriguing and superb technique, so many washes! The finished product is beautiful though!

How long would you guess each model would take with this technique? With the watery paint/wash I suppose it would be possible to do a reasonable number of models at the same time what with time for drying and your paint not drying up??

I wish I could do the same on my templars! However, I am thing of doing some pre-heresy thousand sons and this method would be perfect. How would you recommend I get a darker finish? More purple, more sepia, more mud or use a different base red??

Thanks

@Toyship: I hadn't thought about adding letters to the sword. Those letters are my first attempt at writing. I think I am going to write more on the models going forward though. Question for you Toyship, what color would you use to write something on the chainsword, a metallic or just plain white? I am going to experiment. Thank you for the suggestion.

@ Brother Loring: It takes me quite awhile to finish a model. I don't think that can be blamed on the technique though. I am a slow painter and I get easily distracted. I bet with good planning and a good comfort level with the technique, one could crank out a good looking model in about 4-5 hours easily. Starks33 and Lunchbox are the guys who I look to when using this technique. They are much better at it than I. I know they have a glazing tut here on the B&C and it is really helpful. The colors are different but the nuts and bolts of it can be applied to anything. Again, it's a really useful bit of information and I suggest taking a look at it if you haven't yet.

To get a darker red I would start lower. I start with Dwarf flesh and work down from there. Maybe start at Blood Red or even red gore. The important thing to take into consideration is how bright you want the highlights to be. That fist coat is basically your final highlight so start there. The red can be made darker with the use of the GW washes AND with making your layers darker by adding darker reds to the mix.

Example

Prime=white

Basecoat=red gore

1-4 layers=red gore

4-8 layers=red gore +scab red

9-12 layers=scab red

13-16 layers=Scab red + scorched brown

17-20 layers=Scorched brown

As you go down in layers make sure you put most of the paint in the cracks and shadows.

That should get you a pretty dark red. Add some purple and then some sepia and then some mud then add some baal red and I think you will like the results.

I paint on a wet pallette and I dillute my paints with tons of water. The paint it so thin when it goes on the model that it will dry quickly so I can keep painting. Using this technique, it doesnt matter if the layers blend together, you actually want that to happen.

Good luck!

Well, I suppose, if you left the majority of the blade black, which would seem right as the boltpistol is black, that it would make sense to do the writing in a grey, with the edges highlighted almost up to white. It would be cool to give it the illusion of being engraved into the body of the chainsword. If you look at this picture, you will see what I am trying to explain, on the banner, with the engraving on the skull:http://www.coolminiornot.com/135714.

Thats not my work btw :). Hopefully you can come up with something cool.

Thanks to Apologist for the tutorial about making this mark of helmet. I looked over that thread and I thought that style might look good on my Blood Angels so I gve it a go this weekend. It still takes me forever to do but I am pleased with the results. What do you think?

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC01742.jpg

I don't know if I will have all my tacticals with this style of helmet or not. It depends on my GS skill and it's still slow going. I might paint the face plate some kinda red nmn but I haven't decided that yet.

If I knew how to cast I would give it a go for certain, but I don't know how so... It would certainly save me a huge amount of time as my O.C.D. will only allow me to maybe do 2 or 3 of those heads in a reasonable amount of time (1 day is about right. At the end of the day however my hands are a total mess!) The tutorial I found in the Librarium section. Its under the macragge style helmets field. Here is the link http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...showarticle=500 I hope that works for you.

I don't know if the helmets look too big on regular marines. I'll be able to judge better once I get these guys all painted up and kitted out. I have 4-5 more of these to go before my tactical squad will be finished. Then I get to paint them.

At the rate I am going I will have this army finished hopefully just before the new codex comes out---at which point they will probably be useless. Oh well.

Apologist's helmet tutorial.

Had it handy because it's been open in one of my browser tabs for about a week now. I too plan on using it for power armour, but probably not on more than a few models, I want to keep it more or less unique in the army.

EDIT: D'oh, already linked above.
