Wip Blood Angels Update 1-12-10

I changed my mind about using those helmets for my tactical squads. They just don't look right to me on those guys. Something about how they are are all kind of squatting made the proportions look a little off and I'm not about to go through the whole true scale bit. I will at some point but not right now. The running legs however seem to be a little bigger or more upright so instead of a tactical squad I am going to turn them into my jump jet VAS squad. They are a bit PW heavy since I ran out of good power fists but oh well. Here are the first two. I have 6 of those Dante jump jets so they will get those. I hope you enjoy. Comments and criticism welcome.

This isn't being updated fast enough. <_<

I really love the models as a whole, but that being said, there is always room for improvement for any painter. Your metallics need to be dulled down, in my opinion. Using a thin Badab Black wash (for the silvers), along with a thin Devlun Mud (for both the bronzes and the silvers) wash in the cracks will help do this. A coat of brush-on matte varnish will also help out with this. Duller metallics help bring focus onto the rest of the model, rather than just the metal bits.

I love the yellow, by the way.

Here are the latest VAS guys and I actually put a jump pack on one of them. I think I have 6 of these style jump jets so I will use as many of them up as I can. I hope you all enjoy them. One of these days I might actually finish them. Anyhow, here is what I have so far. I locked my keys in my truck tonight so I almost smashed them all in a fit of rage.

I hope to get more finished by the weekend. Enjoy Brothers!

HA! I was searching for my WIP thread, and yours popped up, so I figured I'd see what I as getting blamed for this time... :D

Ok, seriously, these are fantastic. My only crit, is to back off the washes, and be very specific where you put them...only in the shadows. You're losing a little depth by using devlan mud...a dark purple might be something to try. All in all, though...these really do look great.

Wow man this is bloody imperssive. Honestly some of the most impressive Blood Angels i have seen in a while. Its clean, its crisp, its not that flashy red from GW, i love them. And the helm conversion came out absolutly great. Really want to see more.

Here is the latest work I have been able to scratch out on my VAS. I have been experimenting more with the whole freehand stuff. This is a sort of a big update. I have to do some touch up stuff on the bits and all. Progress is coming slow but its still plodding along. Anyhow here are the latest additions to the VAS.

Here is the Power Fist guy.

Melta gun guy. I still have to do some work on the melta yet so that is still on the to-do list.

This guy is just a chainsword guy. I have to find a chainsword to glue to him. Anyone know if they make those that aren't attached to a hand?

Here is a group shot

Here are some more standard chainsword guys. I'm pretty proud of these guys as I had to do a ton of cutting (for me) to get the arms into position. I try to make my assault elements look dynamic.

That last guy is one of my favorites. Let me know what you all think. I don't know how to feel about the new Blood Angel releases. On one hand I can't wait to see them, on the other I am hoping my latest painted guys don't become obsolete. Oh well I guess I should enjoy the process and just shut up.

They look great. The yellow is very clean and the red is very rich and deep. I'm liking the poses, i'll have to come and nab some when i do my jump troops.

As for the new book, i'm willing to bet you'll be able to use these guys in it. In some cases you may have to make one or two more, or leave a couple out, but they will fit somewhere.

I really like your red, and the effort you put in the progress can be seen very well.

The last guy is epic, I totally love his dynamic pose! What arm did you use for him? A normal chainsword arm?

Snorri

Edit:

Totally forgot about it: The last guy reminds me of GoW2 with these badass chainsword-rifles...love his pose! ;)

Dude, these are fantastic! Really love the dynamics and colours!

I especially love that power sword! Would you mind sharing the technique? I have a set of Veterans I am about to start and that is about the most convincing rendering I have considered trying!

Dan the Demon: That would be great! If I ran chaos I would nab your ideas as well. I like how your guys have all the bits on them.

Angry Marine: Thank you for the kind words. There is a tutorial on how to make those helmets. It's by a guy named Apologist and his work is really good. You should check it out. It's a really good read.

Liath: Thank you for the kind words. I love the style of the French painters. So subtle and smooth. You guys over there are like wytches with your mad painting skills. There must be something in the water over there. Thank you so much.

Snorri: I'm pretty sure its a regular chainsword arm melded with a biker arm. I put how I did it over in our forum. (The Blood Angel forum). GOW is gears of war right? That looks like a great game.

Iron Kobra: Info on the power sword is over in the Blood Angel forum. I left you a large message over there.

Eikrem: I think Iron Man is awesome. I seem to be getting that coment alot with these guys. It must have been a subconcious thing. I also think the red and yellow together on the helm makes them look more Iron Manny.

Captain Lysander: Thank you and I will keep going with these guys until they are finished...should be about next year at which point I will probably start them over due to my terrible OCD.

Here are some more members of the VAS.

I still have to finish the flamer on this guy. I'm thinking I will put alot of gold on the flamer since these guys are supposed to be all elite and what have you.

Here is another chainsword guy

Here is the Power axe guy. Have not decided what color I want to make his power weapon yet. I'm kind of partial to green. I was thinking of marine power weapons kinda like jedi lightsabers, the different colors mean different things but I don't know yet. Red looks cool on power weapons as well. I have found that painting the power weapon effect on axes is alot different than swords. I still haven't figured it out entirely yet. Anyone have any good power axe pictures? I' m a bit stumped on this guy.

Here is a group shot of these last three guys.

Here are two of my power weapon guys that are pretty much finished. I just have to base them.

There they are so far. I have a question for my fellow Frater. Does the red need highlighting? I try not to highlight red. I'm wondering what you all think. Thank you for looking.

I think your red is perfectly fine. It is dark and deep, but not too dark so it needs highlights, because you have some striking contrasts with the yellow helmets and JP.

I don´t use many highlights as well, but the red I use is rather bright, so more highlights just would´t look well.

Here is the latest from the VAS. 4 more bases and 6 jump packs and the VAS are finished! I can't wait. Don't know what I am going to paint afterwards. I will probably get started on a Tactical squad or two. In anycase here are the latest from the VAS.

Chainswordguy

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02082.jpg

I went with a more bone colored wing emblem on this marine and I am happy with the results. I think the warmth ties in better than building it up from a gray to white. I might do more to it but for now I am good with it.

Powersword green guy

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02084.jpg

Powersword blue guy

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02069.jpg

Powerfist guy

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02074.jpg

Chainsword guy who was in the Death Watch? I think that is what that shoulderpad signifies right?

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii292/MrBlonde567/DSC02078.jpg

So there they are as of now. Any CC welcome.
