Long Fangs or Tanks?

I have been thinking of using Logan to give the Longfangs Relentless. Give them a razorback tour them around, jump out and start shooting, jumpbqack in and move to a save place to repeat it again the next round.

Logan is in Terminator Armour, he can't board a Razorback.

So maybe not the RB, but I can see a LR easy. Nice idea. Can you imagine the fire power lets see, 7 LazC shots 5 of them able to split fire.

WG Vrox

They seem to replace their basic weapon (chainsword I think) with a heavy weapon, thus making this an odd and possibly oversighted section of the codex.

CC w/ a heavy wpn? I guess they have a bayonet wpn on it or they just try to beat people with it...

There is a definite time and place for both. In the old 'dex, the LFs were just too expensive to field, and like others have said in this thread, they became fire magnets for experienced players.

Now that the 'dex has been revised, I'd have to say that it would benefit you to have a little of both. I, personally, love the LFs and will be using them extensively in some of my builds.

I would have to say LFs for city fighting, where they can make the best use of cover, and armor for normal engagements where the armor's longevity can give you an advantage.

The split fire ability is also a great boon to the LFs; it's very deadly when used effectively.

I would say, depending on the type of armies you tangle with, and depending on the amount of money you can afford to sink into your army, to pick up a couple sqauds of LFs and a couple of tanks.

Vindis are awesome b/c of their death-bringing-pie-plate-of-doom, but they are pretty short ranged.

Whirlwinds are always good to have, as are preds b/c of the ability to load them out to suit basically any situation.

So...in short... BOTH!!!

Horde Army : 5 long fangs + Pack leader , All heavy bolters. RazorBack twin-linked Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour.

Mech Army : 5 long fangs + pack Leader, Missile Launchers, RazorBack twin-linked Heavy Bolters, Extra Armour.

Turn Razor Back side ways, spread squad out between the hull, use the hull as cover. With the ability to split fire, one half can shoot at Target A, and the other half at target B. With the pack leader and additional heavy weapon hiding behind vehicle, 10-1, half the squad will be hidden and bam! 4+ cover save for the entire squad. And if things get bad, you load up in the Razor Back and scoot out of dodge.

Thank me later :(

Adding warm bodies to a mech army just creates a target for your opponent's anti-infantry guns. If you present them with a host of armour and a 6 man squad on a hill you can bet money that squad will be the target of every whirlwind, plasma cannon, battlecannon, deffgun, Shokk attack gun, etc your opponent has until they're gone.

Present him with yet more armour and you over sretcth his capacity to deal with tanks. He can only pack so much anti-tank, at some point you overwhelm his capabilities. I would advise looking at what your army needs help shoring up (usually anti-tank but sometimes in wolves a few heavy bolters are needed) and adding a pred, whirlwind, vindie or dread to fill that role.

As for speeders these were my primary source of anti-tank firepower for pretty much the whole of 3rd and 4th edition. Now that skimmers moving fast has changed I don't know how valuable they are but 2 x MM mounting standard speeders was usually sufficient for me to kill that russ/raider/defiler that my opponent had pinned his hopes on.

I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned a load out with multimeltas

5 Fangs with a pack leader and 5 Multimeltas in a HB Razorback.

You don't get better anti tank/anti monstrous creature than this.

Point for point this pack is only a little more exspensive than a Vindicator or a Pred and is way more survivable if you use cover properly.

OK a pred will have more range on it but if something comes within 24" of a pack like that they will not be around for very long.

Personally I may even exchange a couple of the MMs for Plasma cannons but that's because I love them.

Before I'd take multi-meltas I'd stump up the extra 15 points per model to take lascannon.

Long Fangs are much cheaper than they used to be. My old pack with 4 missile launchers was 188 points. Now with 5 missile launchers it'd be 150 points. My other squad with two lascannon and two missile launchers was 218 points, with 2 lascannon and 3 missile launchers it is now 180 points. That's very comparable with an Annihilator with sponson lascannon for 165 points. You may well argue that the Annihilator is immune to most anti-personal weapons, but with a 48 inch range the Fangs generally aren't vulnerable either.

Basically characters (though more expensive individually) only require one rather than 1 per 750 points. Generally infantry got cheaper as did bikes and jump packs. My army has room for a few more models now. Wolf Guard are fairly cheap unless you load up on their options. They're like buying a car in that respect.
