Could go either way all they have to do one way is write a specialized codex or and release a couple of miniatures, the other way the game would have to be designed. they will go whichever way will make them the most money if it happens so i think new codex.

Remember there is already a lot of fan released Pre-heresy stuff out there. I doubt anything that GW might release would be anything approaching the level of detail of the tempus fugitives pre-heresy packs for instance! Bell of Lost Souls also produced a more limited but fun pre-heresy campaign pack and rules.

Although there has been talk of a 'pre-heresy sprue' which has been kicking around for several years now, I'm not sure whether it will ever be released. Remember so much of GW is orientated towards getting new players (mostly children) into the hobby, adding another timeline which is something seperate from 40k would make an already complex and detailed game world that much more to take in!

Thing with a heresy era codex with a few small releases (a box of sprues or just upgrades or something and a couple of blisters) is that there's really no reason you couldn't just use those parts with regular Marines and Chaos Marines to depict pieces of venerated armour. I don't think you'd really need a specific codex - nothing much there that couldn't be handled by using any of the variety of Power Armour codexes and counts-as, or by playing two force org lists of Marines and Guard.

So, say, heresy grunts box, heresy terminators box, and maybe a metal heresy dread - then you might want to have some bits packs of heresy Legion bits, that could also see use as modern day Chapter bits.

Exactly, I'm wondering if some of the 'heresy-era sprues' and other bits and pieces we used to keep hearing about where just fed into the miniatures range rather than being released as a standalone heresy-era product - the mk3 armour marine in AoBR and Sergeant Chronus being 2 examples.

I agree though, a Forgeworld PH Dread would be most welcome! :)

I'd love to see a Great Crusade/Heresy Era expansion. And it would be great for people to create true Pre Heresy armies rather then an approximation, or spending a fortune on Rogue Trader era stuff (that stuff is nice, but some of it just costs way too much on ebay). Its not like a huge amount of work would be needed to rework most of the main armies either, maybe some bonuses for some armies (Guard getting more Vanquishes or tanks as Troops). Actually Eldar, Dark Eldar and Orks wouldn't really need any work, the pointy ears and their spiky cousins haven't really changed too much since the 31st Millenium and Orks are.....well their Orks, its all cobbled together with nails, tape and a bit of luck. Even changes for Space Marines would be cosmetic, larger squads perhaps, some equipment not available, others available in greater supply (helloooooo Jetbikes).

The biggest problem would be the three "new" armies, The Tau, Necrons and Tyranids, their are recent additions to the universe (Tau maybe being around for 400 years or so, the Bugs 300 and Necrons about 150 give or take). How do they fit into a Pre-Heresy game? Count-as? Modified lists? "Hey Joe, your Tyranids are going to count as Mega-arachnids, only they don't get guns and the Zoanthropes are out."

Its not a huge problem, but one they'd have to give serious thought to without alienating a large customer base, or forcing people to use a small fraction of their collections.

I know that there is a set of MKIV legs in the AoBR marines, and a pseudo-MKV helmet on the missile launcher marine...

But there's a MKIII armored marine in there too?

Really?
