Gibious
Hey all, I have been lurking for a good week now and have read at least the first 12 pages of this forum in the thirst for knowledge (I get bored at work...) A little bit about me is I am an ex Fantasy player who dropped the game when they updated my Codex. TBH I actually liked the challenge of DE until we became the next big thing. Also my 8 year old brother wanted to start the game so on his B'day I got him a Tyranids battalion (Bigger models for painting, and if all else fails, dip them) Any Help in that would be grateful. My other Brother chose necrons and got his battalion. I treated myself to two GK Boxes and a GKT Box. Anyway as a simple way to learn the basics of playing me and the necron player tried out a mini 500pts battle. Simple kill points on a very narrow board 3' x 2'. I brought both squads of GK but putting both incinerators in 1 unit, a BC with Psycannon and a Lance strike. With other war gear that didn’t see play. He had a Lord with 2 squads of 10 and some special items. The Battle Summery: After cleverly setting up terrain with two well positioned walls close to my deployment he won the roll off and took that side. And put a squad behind each. I kept the BC in reserve and keyed the Lance on the terrain protecting the lord aiming for a insta death on him and them hopefully to push him into open. It was a lame battle as we both meandered and shot each other. I was too cautious to enter his rapid fire range and he didn’t mind. I did however use trees in the centre to block LOS of his second warriors. Lance came down early and perfectly whacking 7 warriors, not the lord though because of the targeting characters in 50k. His next turn he revived all but two due to a resurrection orb, at least he was scared enough to move out of that cover towards me and not get a shot off that turn. BC came in badly into LOS of both warriors, so panicking I made him run. Not far enough and he took 17 Gauss hits to the face, 11 were enough to wound, and rolled them all off successfully =) Both our jaws dropped at that moment. Not much else really happened in the battle except for another successful Lance hit killing 3 more after WBB. End of game he killed 3 guys from my Incin squad and I managed to put down 7 Necrons for good in his leader squad. 0 KP each so went to VP. I brought 10 Warriors to half strength and he brought 5 GK with 2 Incins to half. Ill let you work out the outcome for now. Main Points: -Why was either of us bother with the terrains 4+ cover when we both had 3+ armour and nothing to knock it off =S -Should have lanced the second squad out of Res orbs range... -I love terminator armour -I’m too protective (incinerators never made range...) -Shouldn’t of DS the BC. The 3 extra shots from get go could of helped. So guy's and doll's, what do you think? -Gib- Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178883-first-40k-battle/ Share on other sites
fuzbuckle
I played my 1st 500 point GK army last night and the battle report along with some good 500pt advice can be found here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=178743 One thing that I would suggest based on the 4 total 40k games that I played (all between 400 and 750 points as I've only played battle for McCragge and Assault on Black Reach) is to use objectives with some LOS blocking terrain. In those previous games where we had limited terrain and no objectives the games played out how you described. Last nights game with 2 objectives separated by pretty much the entire length of the board and a giant blocking hill forced us to make some cool tactical decisions. Do I commit my whole force to one objective and wait and see if he comes to take it and if not settle for a draw? Do I try and seize both objectives and split my forces? Or, what I decided to do last night, do I actively try and capture 1 and deny 1 knowing that if either fails, the best I can hope for is a draw? There may be others but those were the only three that I saw last night. traitor_dice
put some shooty stuff on the hill to help cover either side while trying to get both, or at least one objective? as for advice with small games, don't hesitate to go all in. iv had games useing the battle for macragge set where we just played until either force was annihalted, and 10 marines killed the genestealers and kept the WoN gaunts dieing....again....and again...and again. point is, at such low points is where SM's and thus GK's advantages really show. as SM are superior to most other races basic troops, they don't have much to fear as with such a low point limit, its unlikely that anything other than basic troops and maybe an H.Q will show up. Gibious
Thanks all for the help, no I have learnt the rules I will defiantly opt of an objective game with more LOS terrain. At the moment we are using playmobil, which is brilliant for difficult terrain and hedgerows but nothing that blocks LOS. I do intend to eventually include some inquisitorial support, but once the GK have built up their forces. First I plan a GK Terminator retinue with Leader Psycannoning it up. Then a core 666 of 3 squads of 6 GK one full of incinerators, one psycannons, one bolters =) and then as I like multiples of 2, two dreads. Only then would the Inquisition step in and take control. =) Had another battle this Sat this time to teach my much younger brother (8) how to play his Tyranids. Rather embarrassingly he wiped me off the board. I had the same list as before for simplicity. He brought 2 lots of 8 Spinegaunts, 8 Genestealers, 3 Rippers, 3 Warriors (1 VC others DS) and a Godfex that was 200pts alone =S He had first round and more units, so got to deploy his warriors in LOS to my Bolter squad with BC. He let rip and killed all but the Justicar… =( yes including the BC. My second squad almost decimated his Ripper swarm with their flamers but the game already felt lost. The GodFex made amazing run rolls and traversed the entire diagonal of the board (I deployed as far from him as possible) hitting and eating my Incinerator squad over 2 turns taking only 1 wound damage (4 left…) During this time I hurled my Justicar into a Spinegaunt squad to survive from more warrior fire. He surprisingly killed every single one thanks to fearless, but only just in time to get flattened by the Godfex Summary: I needed to block LOS so badly against those warriors. Godfex and the warriors just killed me so quickly. BC didn’t DS this game but got killed before his turn. (Deployed then destroyed) Lance came down once and too late, wounded one warrior. At least my justicar single handily took on 40 points of tyranids and won… wait wasn’t he 50pts…. Beaten by an 8yr old, well he can just wait until I bring in my GM with terminators =) -Gib- Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/178883-first-40k-battle/#findComment-2119309 Share on other sites
