Holy Promethium

I guess the title says it all. For those of you who are experienced Sisters players, have you ever taken this little upgrade for your flame units on vehicles. I myself never have but lately I have considered it just to see its effectiveness.

I also see that in the INAT FAQ it can force a 2nd morale test or more since it forces an immediate morale test. Of course I l realize that many people do not use the INAT. I know my local group does't. Has anybody tried it that way?

What are people's thoughts? Is this little baby worth the 10 extra points on the already overpriced Immolator?

Not really worth the ten points everytime I have gotten an immolator close to targets to use the flamer template the target is usually gone. Last time I used the Immy I was able to hit a 40 man guard squad w/ a Commisar (warned my friend that he should not have bunched them together) and killed them all but the Commissar and then unloaded 5 stormbolters (I love dominions with stormbolters) into him.......no powerfisting my Canoness that game. But back on point most players just unload in to immys because they have such weak armour and die like rhinos.

Aint that the truth! In all the games I have used mine, I have yet to actually fire it, as either it gets destroyed or loses it flamers with the 1st volley against it. So, in other words, I have never used HP and unless my luck changes, wouldn't get a chance to use it even if I did take it.

I've got a few points left in my GT list and I'm considering sticking this in to use them up. What I would say is that the immolator is a really effective piece of kit as long as it's used in the right way and under 5th ed we've been given the tools to be able to use it more effectively.

There's 2 things you need to understand about the immolator before putting it on the table, the first of which most have got a grasp of which is how fragile and easy a target it presents to your opponent.

The second thing though is the need to understand what its purpose is when it's actually on the table. It's a pretty obvious statement that it's not a main battletank and so what are the benefits of fielding them? First and foremost has to be the speed at which it can travel whilst still being able to fire its S5 TL heavy flamer. 12" isn't too shabby and if used right should mean that you'll get up close and personal within a couple of turns. Target priority is the key however, it's no good looking at anything that is 3+ sv or better because that'll be a wasted opportunity so it's got to be something lightly armoured which may also rely on cover saves to survive fire. Luckily this means anything other than MEQ or better so IG, kroot, tau, eldar, etc are fair game...but how do you get close enough to your chosen target without getting shot to *?~%?

Smoke is the first essential but you still have to rely on some good luck to keep rolling. The very best way to prevent being shot at is not to be on the table at all and this can be achieved by holding the immolator in reserve. If you do this it benefits you in a number of ways.

1 - Gives the immolator greater survivability reducing the number of turns that it is exposed to enemy fire.

2 - Lets the opoposing player advance across the table reducing the distance required to travel by the immolator to get into template range.

3 - Lets you, the controlling player, decide the best place to deploy to respond to the most suitable target/threat.

...and it works! I'd have to say that in 90% of games now I keep my HQ (3 templates) mounted in its immolator in reserve and rapid deploy to the loaction where it can be used to best advantage. I know chances are it'll only last a couple of turns at best but if it takes out a flank it'll have done its job.

Give it a go, see what you think.

I always have a spot or two for immols. A cheapo basic immol with smoke launchers and a small squad of dominions with stormbolters is nice, cheap and effective. My personal fave is putting in a small celestian squad with meltaguns, giving the immol a twin linked melta and smoke launchers and using that as my designated anti tank unit. The fact that I have 3 exorcists keeps fire off my immols until its too late for the enemy and its crispy purgation time :) To answer the quesiton, no holy prom is not worth it for all the reasons said above, particularly most things you'll be shooting at with flamers will need to take a ld test after being burned anyway. Waste of 10 points, which is basically another sister to throw at them :D

Jim

I have to admit I have never taken it for many of the reasons stated above, but the ease with which most units make morale tests made me think that if if I can force a unit to take another morale check quantity might win out. I have never in all of my 40K battles had a unti break due to shooting. A case in point I had whittled a squad of 30 boyz down to 4 only to have them make their morale check. Thats after 3/4 of my army shot at 1 squad of boyz. Its somewhat disheartening. My question came up becuase I saw the entry in the INAT FAQ and thougth maybe forcing more morale checks might be good otherwise the holy promethium is pretty pointless.

I haven't been playing all that long, but usually when I flame a unit I inflict what I would consider horrible casualties only to have said unit make their morale check then assault me and kill me to the last sister or find that when I dropped multiple flamers in a dominion squad in an immolator my opponents rather wisely removing most of the models in flamer range so that the 2nd part of the unit would not be as effective. Its my curse. ;) Soon after I discovered the beauty of meltaguns, but thats another story.

yah it's pretty much pointless for HP. I feel you Pain about the Ork mob I watched a friend make a leadership with his orks with 2 models left. Dominions with flamers in an immolator is kinda hard to pull off due to the fact once the immy opens up it is what ever is left to the flamers which may now be out of range. Celestians are the best option for immy.
