Nightrunner
Hello fang. Having been waiting to see how the new codex pans out, I have been really pleased to see wolf-packs make a resurgence in the mainstream codex. Having only had a literal 10-minute gander at a copy of the codex, I have to say that my information here is a little sketchy, but I reckon that a 15-wolf pack that charge as cavalry for 120pts is a strong choice. The only worry for me is their leadership or lack thereof..... So my thoughts have been around 15 wolves, and the possibility of a WGBL on thunderwolf to lead them for the leadership bonus, and possibly some additional fenrisian wolves for extra wound-soaking ability. Make that an Iron priest, and the cyber wolves make them even more formidable. In theory....! Are the skyriders and swiftclaws just better choices (not counting Canis)? Or is the cost of giving this unit the LD boost they need just to prohibitive for what is essentially a distraction unit? I'd love some thoughts from anyone who has tried them (I know this might well be limited from the lack of codex so far) or just thoughts from anyone who has had more codex access than poor old me  Thanks in advance! Vassakov
The problem is, 18pt Skyclaws are just better. Deep Strike and Jump Infantry is in almost every circumstance better, and they have the 3+ Sv and 4 attacks on the charge with the option for a Wolf Priest (IIRC) for rerolled hits, a MotW and a WGBL. My personal take on things, but then I've never been a big fan of using Wolves unless you are playing 13th... in which case Skyclaws aren't really a fluffy choice! Decoy
Now now, Vassakov. Don't scoff on the underrated Wolves. They're basically Marines with less armor and more chargeitty goodness! Go go 24" total charge range with DIRT CHEAP models. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179075-using-wolf-packs/#findComment-2118877 Share on other sites
the jeske
they have low LD and its not that hard to make them run by shoting. they cost 3 pts fewer then almost as fast jump pack blood claws. no one will ever know what the DT was thinking when they created the swift claws , but I sense some alcohol ideas in it. there is too much anti horde meta for them today for them to be an effective choice. Wispy
I think they'd be great to run in front of Thunderwolf Cav. They have the same movement, and they'd divert much of the punishment away from the heavy hitters to allow them to slip through. Forseti
Initiative 5 (with saga), 3 attacks, and up to 24" charge range is great for 8pts. Plus some wolves (like me) dislike jump packs because we started in 3rd ed, where they were just unnatural for SW to have. Gentlemanloser
The only downside with Fenrisian Wolves, is how they'll play out without ATSKNF. Especially if you purchase them as an IW/LW/WL Retinue, or attach an IC to them. they cost 3 pts fewer then almost as fast jump pack blood claws Isn't it 10? For thier cost, I have to agree with; They're basically Marines with less armor and more chargeitty goodness! Go go 24" total charge range with DIRT CHEAP models. And as above, if you're running any sizeable amount of Fenrisian Wolves, you'll want to take the Saga somewhere. I5 on the charge, with nearly Marine stats. Awesome. Depending on ATSKNF, adding some Cyberwolves as a Retinue could be very nice. At T5 you could bulk up your IC's Toughness due to Majority rules. beatdemskulls
Fenrisian Wolves are 8pts each. Compared to Blood Claws (BC) the WS4 vs WS3 is nice. Saga of the wolves gives all in the army Ld7 and I5, very nice. Thunderwolves give them a ld reroll if within 12". I had my first SW playtest game with them in the list, I ran a squad of 8 and 9. Here are my thoughts: 1. You need the saga of the wolf to give them the 7ld, this helps immensely to keep them on the board. 2. They will not sustain continued attention, but with their speed and if you take them in numbers can deter shooting at other squads. 3. In my game they went to ground twice, but were moving so fast my opponent had to direct attention to them or get his units tied up. In my 1250 pt game I ran: Wolf lord, frost axe, saga of wolf rune priest, tempest, line of doom 2 GH's in rhinos, mg,MoW,pwr wpn, ttl 9 strong the two squads above long fangs all MLx2 long fangs all HB, HB rzrbck 5 sqouts with MB, MoW VS BA's the combination of the Long Fang fire power and the wolves kept all the pressure of my GH's and pretty much everything else. SW's won handily, I lost 16 pups and one GH total. I like them and will keep working on my Canis based list, with 50 of the little guys.
