Wondering about Switching

Hello sons of Russ. Well you might be able to tell from my name but normally I play Tau, an obviously shooting army and have always wanted to play a melee army to give myself another choice. In order to do this about two years ago I started getting a space marine force. A lot of troops, dreadnoughts, and assualt marines. I was reading the new codex at my store and I found myself drawn to their back story and their rules. While I enjoy my marines, I am thinking about changing over to the Wolves.

I guess my real question is how hard this will to be. I know that one of the new boxes is going to come with about 30 heads I read and they said most would have no helmets. So will it be as easy as switching my helemts for heads and taking the heavy weapons elsewhere or is it going to be harder than that?

I guess the second question would be how can I expect my army to differ? I have read many of the posts but I just was wondering about the general feeling.

All that really defines a SW army is their coloring blue-grey or grey. you could easily paint up some new heads and rip off the old ones. I plan on doing that for my SW's already painted with helmets.

As for how the army play differs I have not a clue because i never played vanilla marines. But from what you said about lots of troops, dreads and assault marines it really shouild not differ too much. I always imagine marines as a flexible army that can go from long to short range. SW a kind of like that but we really like that short range fighting.

Well as to how our play styles differ. We are actually fairly similar. However our Grey Hunters are superior in combat with BP/CCW and bolter. We tend to be more aggressive, moving towards the enemy, gun line Space Wolf armies are few and far between, much better to conduct close range firefights. It's pretty intuitive though.

There are several ways to run the Wolves, with the new Dex. If you want something diehard Assault, I suggest picking up a copy of Eye of Terror and modeling your army after the 13th Company there (NOTE: Eye of Terror is not a legal dex. I'm simply stating you should pick it up for fluff.) Us Wolves, we're so good, we don't -need- tanks. Granted, if you like 'em, go ahead and take 'em.

Likewise, we can also be a balanced tactical force, capable of swift strikes and rapid responses, resulting in annihilation of the enemy within two turns (I'd wager), while being able to hold the line in assault against more dedicated assault troops like Berserkers.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you want out of an army. With the diversity of the new Dex, you can do pretty much anything, and do it well.

Welcome to the Wolves and the Fang, mate. Grab yourself an ale, and prove that you're worth the time.

What do you have your Marines painted as? You could always do a DIY chapter that follows the Space Wolf organization. Just make sure wargear is properly represented and, if you'd be so kind, put a bit of thought into why they're not following the codex.

Otherwise, if you want to do Space Wolves proper, you could just paint them that way - fluff makes a big deal about Space Wolf senses being better without helmets but I hate painting faces and I also don't like how it looks, so I leave most on.

Well right now my army is painted in a RavenGuard scheme, the good old black and white with electric blue as a small highlight on some of the more exotic models.

I have always liked the feel of the Space Wolves, actually about as close as it gets to having good guys in the Warhammer 40k world. After all they actually care about their civies. Plus the whole norse god connection to a lot of their fluff is something I like.
