terminatorAM
ok so i might just be jumping on the band wagon with the new codex coming out and all but i saw the models and was blown away. so ive always played marines started as vanilla and now have a large mechanized force and im currently working on a fluffy showcase style Fleash Tearer army but then i saw the SW and was interested in perhaps starting them as a small side army thats plays a little differently then mech or jump. So the question is are they capable of being a fully infantry footslogging cc force. Im just thinking of 1500pnts or so probably less, made mostly of blood claws and other troops, i also like the idea of termies being troops if Logan is taken so i might use some of them and perhaps long fangs for some firesupport. so i dont have the codex (waiting for the new one) but just going off those general ideas would this be a fun/somewhat competative list to play? Hrathnar Flintfang
I would hold off on it a bit pup. Borrow the codex and be sure. We always welcome new blood here in the Fang, but the Sons of Russ are going to be expensive to start with... probably an ale-related surtax or something. Yes, we really do make many ale related jokes around here... Anyways on to the question at hand. I would not say it is not viable, but I would say you have better options in most cases. I myself remember in my last game footslogging a full pack of Bloodclaws up to a Chapter Master and his Retinue along with a WG Pack leader. They were slain to the man after one assault, but because of the map I did manage to move them up next to the Terminators and administer some punishment before the assault claimed them to the man (in exchange for half the Retinue taken out by one guard) It can be done, and with the right conditions might even be done well. However when you throw Rhinos, Razorbacks and Land Raiders into the mix that is when things start to get better. Aside from providing faster movement for the troops so that they can get stuck in, each of these vehicles offers the usual shelter for the packs, and can help provide the anti-armor punch and other tactical advantages most Marines can get from Devastators. That comes in handy, especially since longfangs have always been a point sink and from what I have heard will still be a high priority target for your foes. I am sure you can come up with a way to do it brother, but considering the advantages to be had when throw a few points into a nice ride for your packs I would say you want to consider at least a little bit of mechanization. Then again I never liked drop pods myself. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179112-all-infantry-list-vaible/#findComment-2119213 Share on other sites
Darkseer
You always need transports in 5th edition -period. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179112-all-infantry-list-vaible/#findComment-2119220 Share on other sites
Hrathnar Flintfang
Well you don't NEED transports, unless I missed something, but they are VERY useful to have around and help make the best use of the points you spent so your runners don't get crushed by stray artillery shots or caught up by fire before they can get out and assault ext. Frankly I think there is something to be said for trying to go against the conventional wisdom. I don't think it will work too well, but it is worth a shot. Grey Mage
Ive won tournaments with Footslogging SWs and Footslogging Eldar and Footslogging SoB- all in 5th edition. Transports are optional. Tactics are not. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179112-all-infantry-list-vaible/#findComment-2119229 Share on other sites
SamaNagol
There's plenty of people who won the lottery as well, doesn't mean that going out and buying a ticket every week is the correct financial strategy to follow if you want to be a millionaire. That said, I would say SW are probably the most viable of all the marine lists along with Black Templars for putting together a Power Armour Horde list. Their base cost of 155 pts for a unit of 10 with 2 special weapons is incredibly good value. Though seriously, I cant think of a single reason that on a board with a normal amount of cover a 1500pt list cant do just fine footslogging. Especially as we do it better than just about any other marines out there- BT is debatable- with TDA Seargents or SSs on our WG and large squad sizes. Now theres Fenrisian Wolves to provide cheap cover if you want it too? Heck yes! Support that with a couple of Dreadnaughts, and some artillery/long fangs and it synergises very well. I find Transports... confining. On a GH squad with bolters, IE one whos primary prupose is short range fire fights and midranged support, the inability to properly use their primary weapons is inexcusable. Rhinos are also much harder to place in cover than an infantry unit.
