Space Marine Temple

Hi!

I was not sure of this topic belonging to this forum, since this is terrain-related and not directly Power Armour related (as in it is not a power armored miniature). However, it is a piece of terrain I have been building with some friends for my space marine chapter, the Snow Leopards- to be contested by their Khorne army, and after visiting the thread about the "BT command building" I felt I also wanted to show you my work.

The goal is to have the altar of the Temple as the Objective for my marines. Currently no symbols of the Empire have been thrown in, since we are still on an early stage of completition, and discussing about wether we should have these symbols profaned or not.

The idea is to be able to build this out of cardboard:

as always, you can click on the image to increase its resolution.

It is a temple, inspired by cathedrals and gothic architecture. It would be a Temple for the Emperor built by the Empire as a holy place in a minor planet of the Empire of Mankind. In a desperate time, a small battlegroup of Snow Leopards sent there to recover important information would end stranded on that planet, and would fight to protect from the enemies of the emperor while waiting for an emergency extraction.

All the design was arranged in a way it could be build in a very simple way. All walls are just composed of several layers of cardboard, cut in diferent shapes, one on top of the other. However, while simplier and faster than many other methods, this building still requires a lot of work.

Here you have some pics of the actual model we have been working on -forgive the flash in some of them-:

Please, forgive the lack of paint or any painting skill whatsoever on some of the models that appear in the pics. I am only guilty of the loyal -white and blue- marine miniatures.

The completed building shoud measure about 1 meter long, nearly half a meter wide. Quite big for an objective, I admit, but great for having some battles inside the building to be able to conquer the altar.

I don't think a Space Marine would make such a flimsy Temple.

Not to say its architecturally unstable. But its all windows! Who would want to take cover in that?? One explosion and all the glass would shatter, sending small shards of sharp glass into your eyes. While your pulling glass from your eyeballs the enemy has a clear line of sight, since there are so many wide spaces in it.

I love it, its pretty and Gothic. But I think Space Marines would think of its defensible properties first... then Gothic Architecture :D

here is a glass tutorial from Grey Death..

1-> make a nice picture with colors you like (and fit with each other) on normal white paper

2-> photocopy it on a transparant sheet (you can use overhead projector sheets or something slightly thicker))

3-> cut it out and glue it on place.

look in the mini gallery for a pic of terrain with glass

it works really well!!

And in 3 days, we did way more than in our last summer.

All the pics I can access right now are of very bad quality, but I can say Painting Stage is right at hand.

Finally, some better pics of the product at its current stage of completition:

nice  are you making colored glasswindows 2? like a real temple/chapel? and it needs statues

all els looks nice good work

If you do tissue paper works great (the kind you stuff into presents)

In his defence in his OP he says the temple was built by the Imperium and is being used as a make shift fortification by stranded marines. it wasen't built by Space Marines.

All in all a great looking peice of terrain, it actually is usefull to me for some art I'm doing. I think a tutorial should be in order ;)

Yeah, it does look very 'SoB'. Work that into the Fluff, if you will.

I'd love to try something like this. Though, don't Laser Cutters cost, what, £3,000?

Impressive, be sure to add guns if its a space marine Temple as destroying the emperors foes is prayer to them (well the sound of bolters is prayer and the deaths of the emperors foes offerings), and a pic heavy warning woulnd't go amiss

Yeah, some Guns would go a long way! I'd pick up some Defence Batteries from the Aegis Defence Line/Imperial Bastion Kits;

But where are the updates? :/

Ludovic

Ufortunately, there have been none since last pic was taken. We hope to be able to put some paint on it by next week. If I am lucky, I might even be able to get some pics of it on a tabletop in two weeks.

To be honest, I have kinda grown past this version of the temple. As any designer, as soon as there is no more designing work to do on my creation, my mind flows onto the next project. That means, I am working on the plans for a more impressive temple. It will be taller and much more full of detail. Every section will be far more complex. The plan is to add a lot of detail to each new section by sculpting using greenstuff, adding a "concrete" style of texture... It will feature decorated columns, be modular in height, allowing us to move our miniatures easier on the inside by removing the top sections, a real floor...

However, the first temple was built on a budget, and our only expense was... the glue it has been glued with, as cardboard is something we found for free. Unfortunately this new version would require quite an investment, and I am currently not swimming on money. This means progress will be slow at best... which in something that implies sculpting by hand lots of details into both sides of 40 different pieces, some bigger than a sheet of paper means it will move at snail pace. I am married, with a wife that I could say... "tolerates, but does not encourage" my gaming, so finding that kind of time is not easy. I have some friend support to which I could give work, however

I would post rendered images, as I did with the previous one, but my PC crashed anytime I tried to build this new temple in 3d. It is not a capable enough machine, while it handled the previous temple in full.

Currently the pieces I have not yet designed for that next temple are the main gates, roof (yes, I want it to have a removable roof), arches of the main "nave" and the crossing.

The gates and crossing will consume quite some time, I fear.

Indeed, it has been done for nearly a year by now. I built a PDF with both a step by step tutorial on how to build an exact copy of this building and the templates for all the needed pieces, including some reference images too. It is in Spanish and English. Would anyone be interested?

To be honest, I do not know what does a lasser cutter cost, although its not affordable by any means. I simply managed to convince some university teachers to allow me to use the university one for some time. The fact is, however, that you do not *need* a laser cuter.. It is extremely useful... if you have the CAD templates, but it is not something you can not compensate with both dedication, and a TON of free time. To back my point, I remember you the gates and towers were made before we had access to any laser cuter of any sort.

As I said in response to another poster, this temple was built on a budget, so no purchases were intended. If I was to put weapons on it, I would fill the building with sandbag barricades and such, on the inside, since the intention was for it to be a civilian temple in a war-torn are to have been taken as a base by a space marine group as a last resort in their defense of the planet. I don't think modifying the structure of the building to acomodate automated weapons would be in their agenda, since these would require some heavy modifications. As for heavy bolter nests with ruble and sandbags, I am all for it. However, I do not own any heavy weapons I am not using on my miniatures right now, and I fear bit purchasing is not really an option for me.

Dos palabras: Im prezionante.

Por favor dime que eres de cerca de Bilbao para poder ver esa maravilla en persona...

I fear I am from Valencia, but thanks for the compliment. I fear would not be THAT impressive in person, but I will try to take some good pics if we get to play soon on it. Even if it is not painted and there is no other scenery xD
