Old wolf learning new tricks

Having been out of the game for a number of years and seeing that my beloved Space Wolves are getting a rewrite, I have been doing some researching/retooling/wishlisting/relearning my army to get it inline with the new rules. My question is about what a few terms/rules mean. I dont see them in the main rule book.

In regards to Drop Pods, what is the Inertial Guidance System and Drop Pod Assault. Just need the cliffs notes as to not violate GW IP.

Also is it known if SW DP armys are all or nothing like last edition?

As an aside, how have all DP marine armys of any chapter faired since the C:SM revamp? How effective is it? I ask because I have 8 total pods now (was building 6 scratch built pods when I left the game before offical pods were announced).

No its not all or nothing, but all drop pods have the drop pod assault, which means that you MUST select half of them to enter play on the first turn. Which could be good or bad, depending on how you play and what you put in the drop pods. And from some of the new blood, welcome back (if you left) and have an ale. Oh and I like the flag too.

**edit The inertial guidance system means that you can't land on top of a unit or impassable and destroy the drop pod anymore, you scatter the minimum distance necessary from them, meaning if you scatter on top of them you subtract the smallest number of inches possible to avoid landing on top of them. You can still land off of the table though.

Not only can you still drop off the table, if you place a pod in a spot where it will have a misshap, and it rolls a hit.... you cant "reduce" the scatter to save yourself- you misshap like anyone else who smashs into a giant rock at speed.

My Drop Pod army has had mixed results. Against armies like Tau it was like dropping into a shooting gallery but against other armies like codex marines it has been a spectacular success. The opponent also plays a part in this as if they have played against an all drop pod army, they may 'castle up' against you and I have found that this is difficult to break down. An inexperienced opponent maybe confused, make mistakes and give you the advantage.

Against Tau and such its worth it to note that you DONT have to use the DPs youve purchased. You can in fact just drop empty pods while having deployed most or all of your forces onto the table. Alternatively you yourself can "castle up" using the DPs to block line of sight and hedge in transports, especially large ones like Landraiders and Devilfish.

Just because you bought it doesnt mean you have to let your opponent use it against you. Do the tactical thing.
