Howling
Hail brothers, Last weekend I managed to grab the new codex from our store and convinced the manager that it was about time someone did a little test run with them... Of course with "little" I ment 2000 Points little, and after a little searching I found a eldar player willing to stand the fury of my wolves in bloody combat. I've been using the list I have posted here (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=178591 , the one at the bottom with the skyclaws) My opponent used something like this (I don't have his complete list so I'll just try to remember what I saw..) Runeprophet + Banshees in Serpent, 2 Falcons 10 Scorpion Warriors 5-6 Warpspiders 2 Big Units of Asuryans Guards 1 Phantom Lord Big Unit of Jetbikes 5-6 of this flying eldar dudes (don't know their real name) 1 vyper with lance... I think that's it.... I was kinda confused why he didn't use Khaindars n stuff like that, but he told me he didn't like to sit back and shoot all the time but rather wanted to stay mobile and attack......attacking my wolves? May as well dig your own grave was the only thing that came to my mind while stopping myself from laughing out loud... We got to play annihilation and he got the first turn... He held his warp spiders, flying eldars and his scorpion warriors in reserve.. Since most of his mech units (both falcons, his serpent and the phantom lord) stood on the right flank I decided to put my two units of long fangs as well as two rhinos with ghs there as well to counter them, while the majority of my attack force (the two units of fenrisian wolves, my skyclaws with the wolfpriest, my thunderwolf cavalery + Wolflord, and the remaining rhino with greyhunters) remained on the left flank to slaughter his asuryans guard and jetbikes as well as the possibly appearing reserves of him... Right flank: As expected he focused most of his attacks on my right flank where he assumed my "weak flank".....in response I prepared my greyhunters and let my longfangs shoot at his serpent, hoping for it to blow up before his banshees could reach my line.... To support his banshees he warped in his warpspiders which instantly started shooting at my longfangs, but thanks to the wolfguard and leader I had enough meatshield to keep them working.... Fuelled by the power of revenge my grey hunters wiped out the entire unit of warpspiders in return and prepared to take on the charge of the banshees, still hoping for the longfangs to take out their serpent first... But thanks to my bad luck (or better said his holo fields....curse them..) his serpent only lost all his weapons and still managed to toss out the banshees...which instantly charged my greyhunters....of course they counter attacked, but due to the vile screaming and energy blades of the banshees I had lost 2/3rd of my hunters before they could even react, which lead to them only killing 2 banshees in return...but nonetheless my wolves stood proud and didn't move a inch away from their enemy... In the following turns my long fangs took out all weapons of the remaining falcons (goddamn holo fields!!, would have destroyed them 5 times without them..) and finally managed to destroy one of them.... My second unit of greyhunters managed to destroy the serpent and took on the charge of the phantom lord, binding him in combat for the rest of the game since my wolfguards energyfist just didn't want to hit... After 2 desperate rounds of close combat my grey hunters eventually got whiped out, but didn't go before taking a total of 3 banshees with them (curse his rerolled armor saves...) The flying eldar unit appeared right behind my second unit of longfangs but didn't manage to harm them at all (he had shocked them down on my left flank before, but came to close to my units and ended up on the other side of the table, having to fly high once again and descend somewhere else afterwards.....resulting in the late game appearance of them...) After killing my unit of grey hunters my enemy decided to move his banshees to attack my left flank.... Left flank: On my left flank my attack was swift, brutal and hella bloody...my enemy managed to blow up my rhino in the first turn, forcing my grey hunters to foot slogger into a nearby building in the middle of the map... My fenrisian wolves, skyclaws and thunderwolves pressed the assault though, and nothing could stop them...my enemy managed to kill some fenrisian wolves with his asuryans guard and killed 1-2 hunters, but besides that they just stormed right through his shooting phases using all the cover they could get.... Once my line reached his defense the game on this side was basically decided....my wolf lord took out the whole unit of jetbikes on his own, resulting in 14 attacks on the following turn, and leaving the rest of my charge without targets since the asuryans guard was hiding in a building too far away to charge....In return one full unit of asuryans hunters opened fire on my lord + thunderwolves, but thanks to their toughness 5 and armor saves only 1 lost a single livepoint.....the face of my enemy was priceless.... Fearing to fail again he decided to shoot the remaining asuryans guard at my fenrisianwolves, killing 5 of them.. In the next turn my lord + thunderwolves charged the first unit of asuryans guard....my lord once again slaughtering all but 3, who in turn got easily slaughtered by my remaining thunderwolves... In his turn my enemy kinda lost his mind and after shooting at my lord+thunderwolves (not hurting a single one) he decided to ATTACK them!...a counter attack and the fact that he attacked my unit in cover saw his whole unit slaughtered by my lord alone again, resulting in the whole left flank being dominated by me and slaughtered by my lord + thunderwolves... As the banshees came from the right flank they managed to kill the remaining 5 fenrisian wolves which where running over to my right flank at that time, just to find themselves within the jaws of my whole skyclaw squad, my whole greyhunter squad and of course the second unit of fenrisian wolves and my lord + thunderwolves.... Seeing that he had no chance at all he eventually gave up and we shook hands on the fun game.... Oh and yes...his scorpion warriors never managed to reach the field as he always messed up their reserve throws... Result: He lost all of his vehicles except for the phantom lord and a weaponless stunned falcon, and had only one doomed unit of flying eldar and the remaining 2 banshees + rune prophet left at the end (because his scorpion warriors never appeared..), while I had lost 17 Fenrisian wolves, 4 Long Fangs, 15 grey hunters....oh and a rhino... Impressions on the game: Fenrisian Wolves: They make for a very nice addition to every charge....I'd only use them with the saga of the wolfkin on some hq though as they would have failed 3 leadership tests if they wouldn't have had their morale of 7... Their initiative of 5 makes them quite nice as well....and a good surprise for those who don't know how deadly they can be... Not to forget that they are a nice meat shield of course... Skyclaws: I can't say much about them yet as they didn't get to kill a single enemy this time.....just nothing left for the puppies this time... Longfangs: Solid Gold....they'll remain a given in every army of mine for sure as their flexibility and heavy firepower is just awersome...splitting up targets is of course key with them.. Greyhunters: They are what you'd expect them to be, very tough allround units, don't leave your house without them...didn't do too much special this game though... Thunder wolves: Very tough hard hitting unit, with their toughness of 5 and their two live points my enemy just didn't manage to kill them in time to stop my lord....I actually just took them as meatshields for my lord, but they ended up to be quite nice on their own as well.... Wolflord: God blessed mother of slaughtering....this one is a beast....he comes with the cost of a :cussing land raider, but hell is he worth it.....he singlehandedly killed about 27 enemies, and would have continued to do so if there where any more left on the field....the face of my enemy when he slaughtered his whole units on his own was just hilarious.....just too bad he didn't leave any enemies behind so my other units on the left flank could have shown what they where made of as well.... So all in all....a very bloody game and a nice victory for the wolves... Praise Russ and the Allfather! Ravenger
interesting read its to bad he did not like the style of sitting back and kiting u around while shooting with his assault weapons, i feel that this would have gave him a larger shot at surviving or posing more of a threat. sounds like you got a decent well rounded group, how did you represent Twolves, and how did this occur "my wolf lord took out the whole unit of jetbikes on his own, resulting in 14 attacks on the following turn" just curious so i could look into this massive leader for my forces Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179215-howling-after-the-first-blood-with-new-dex/#findComment-2120681 Share on other sites

Howling
Yeah I would have preferred to fight a shooty eldar list as well just to see if my lord can make it into close combat or if he gets shoot down before...but well, lots of lots of games to come, so I'll eventually find out... Since I don't have the proper units yet we decided to take bikes for the thunderwolves...didn't look that pretty, but did the job good enough... About the 14 attacks...easily explained... 4 attacks base + 1 (thunderwolve) +1 attack +1 for double lightning claws = 7 attacks... Since he has a wolf wooth necklace and I was very lucky I managed to hit with all 7 attacks...and since I had choosen to rerole my to wound.....7 dead jetbikes ^^ so I got 7 additional attacks in the next round ^^ To be honest though, my second attack didn't end THAT brilliant, and I only managed to kill 7 asuryans guards with my 14 attacks....(thus the remaining 3 had to be killed by my thunderwolves) so I stayed at 14 attacks there as well.. Vlk
Well, wow. As soon as I learn to make thunderwolf cavalry, I'll start fielding them, they seem like a real killer unit. dublindawg
It does sound like taking a unit of thunderwolves may be the way to go. However at $41+ per box for Canis, it might take awhile to field a unit of these bad boys. Are there any wolves that people found in the GW line that can be converted to represent the TW mounts? The only thing I can think of are a model from the D&D mini line 'Vampire Dire Wolf' pretty large and with some GS for tack and saddle it might work. Downside I wouldn't be able to use them in a tourney as the finished model would not be all GW. OnlyInDeath
I thought the finished model only had to be 50% GW or something like that? dublindawg
50% you say....hmmm...then what I found should work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179215-howling-after-the-first-blood-with-new-dex/#findComment-2121056 Share on other sites
WG Vrox
Here are a couple links for count as Thunder Wolves models that I borrowed from a different site. I am not sure GW policy on fielding models that they do not make. I think as long as they don't have a model for it, you can do counts as models from other systems, but I might be wrong on that. http://privateerpress.com/files/products/c...riders-unit.png http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/c...lf-lord-morraig WG Vrox Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179215-howling-after-the-first-blood-with-new-dex/#findComment-2121126 Share on other sites
TB2K
What about these GW wolves? they are mounts for fantasy, you wouldn't want all canis wolves because he is supposed to ride..I think the great thunder wolf? so his mount would I imagine be bigger. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...dId=prod1290040 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179215-howling-after-the-first-blood-with-new-dex/#findComment-2121247 Share on other sites

I have those wolves... and they just wouldn't work. They only come up to the waist of a Space Marine. Basically, think of what you would look like riding a St. Bernard or similar sized dog... pretty goofy looking. Maybe you could do a Chariot Type conversion being pulled by two wolves, but not by just a single wolf. Well... anything that is GW parts is technically legal as long as the wargear is right, so you COULD do it, but it would look goofy. I choose to rerole wounds before I rolled, as far as I understand the rules that's how you do it. Like I said, I was pretty darn lucky with that first combat phase, as you can see with the second one where I still only killed 7 enemies although I had 14 attacks. Well at least if I remember correctly he had this two dices for armor penetration roles thingi....and it was a wave serpent as far as I saw it....but then again my eldar knowledge isn't that great (as you might have realized after reading my great names like "flying eldard" n stuff :P ) so it might as well have been a falcon... Grey Mage
Well... just so you know, if it has 7+ models popping out of it and a twinlinked weapon it CANT have a holofield- just a powerfield. The difference is a holofield is alot like making it "venerable" while a powerfield just caps enemy strength at 8+1d6 for armor penetration *except from behind*. With Wolf Claws you have to decide if you re-roll to hit or to wound on the start of the assault phase before any dices are rolled afaik.
