Wolfe
Hey guys i've been tinkering around with a few list's now and i'd like to hear your thoughts on how many wolves we should field MINIMUM in a competitive 1500 pt list. I like to build a 1500 core list and add to it in blocks of 500. I also am adamant on taking my 2 assault cannon toting wolf guard. Whaddya think? Grey Mage
Id say... it depends lol. Footslogging, mech, or pod? Footslogging- 50. More if you take FW packs. Mech- Probly 35.... two full packs, a tda pack with an HQ, landraider and a support pack of scouts/LFs or two. Maybe a third troop instead. PD- 45- 3 Scoring units, 2 WG units or some FA choices, and a HQ+Dread of scouts. But thats just me. deedark
Agree with Mage depends on set up, but I'd also say going for the minimum is a dangerous strategy. With the quality of troops we have, aim higher. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179322-how-many-wolves/#findComment-2121870 Share on other sites

There is no optimal solution for the number of models/Marines at a given points level. Instead think about what you want your units to accomplish for you in a battle, then build/buy units with those capabilities. Recommend that you have a look here. If you are adamant on fielding your 2 Assault Cannon toting Wolf Guard in TDA, then you will need at least 10 Wolf Guard in the army - that part is simple. How the other 8 Wolf Guard are armed, equipped, and where they are fielded are mostly up to you. Skaldnir
Well i run a mech wolf army, so i would advise a back bone of 40 grey hunters. It'll set you back 600 pts, but it also gives a solid force to start with. Also if you need more bodies try a pair of fen wolf packs along with big squad of blood claws lead by a wolf priest. Best of all, you have 85 models for little more than 1000 pts.(if i understand the new pts values properly). Its always good to have more bodies on the field. Durfast Spiritwolf
With 5th Edition and role of KPs and Objectives, I'd say three strong troops types with at least one of them a 12 - 15 pack of Blood Claws. Under the old codex I ran two packs of fifteen as they were mighty hard to stop when heading for an objective in echelon and a tough couple of KPs to destroy. rodgers37
I was thinking of doing a Run Priest list, with 4 Rune priests, 2 with grey hunter squads, 2 with wolf guard squads all in drop pods.... havn't worked out points or anything.... but might be fun (although i only plan on getting 3 drop pods :S) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179322-how-many-wolves/#findComment-2125800 Share on other sites
Yeti
At 1500, anything less than 30 is risking things. I'd also try to get at least 3 scoring units. My current 1500 has 45 and I'll probably boost that with the new codex (gotta love cheap Grey Hunters!). That includes 4 scoring units (9 man squads), a pack of scouts (7) and two HQs. The 10 WG are gonna set you back though ... but you should be able to fit another 25-30 guys in there. It'll depend on what the rest of the army looks like.
