Space Wolves :D

Hey everyone :)

Space Wolves look awesome.... basically. I have read the codex (mainly rules and stuff... not the fluffy stuff yet...) and really really like, after getting bored of playing Chaos for a year or so.

Firstly i thought i would try and make a list, and it ended up having very little in it (i used expensive stuff.. like TH, SS terminators in a LR...) but than had a new plan on how it could be a horde army as well (45 wolves for 360 points.....) so i think i will end up with a lot of stuff for this, i thought i would start a new army and just get 1500pts (that's what we play mostly where i play.....) but i just think that is impossible in this army..

A couple of questions i want to ask..

Anyone know where to get decent cheap wolves? i thought Wargs might work (but think they might have a funny grove for the ork to sit on....) and i found some from Reaper mini's (but i live in Uk, and don't know how much shipping is...).

Also things like the Wolve lords and lone wolfs i guess you just make from the Wolve pack....

Terminators are aloud in Drop pods? ( i didn't think they where, but as far as i could tell they can go in...) and do the drop pods work the same as normal Space marine ones (i.e Deep striking in first turn....)

and also just a general one, what kind of Army build do you think is best? like i mentioned, it can go to a really expensive one, can have a tank one, or have a horde like army..... i will probably go for a mix, but any advice on what would be a 'good' stable army would help (as i don't know Space marines very well either, Chaos i guess are similar, but much better :tu:, but space Wolves look like the 'chaos' version of 'good' space marines, as they are much more powerful.. i think anyway...)

Look at the wolves you can get from the fantasy line from GW, 5 wolves for $15, not sure on the euro price.

Terminators are allowed to be in drop pods, and they follow the C:SM for deployment purposes (ie:1/2 deep striking the first turn)

For Wolf Lords, you can take named characters that they have models for or create your own using the kits. You will be kitting for the lone wolves.

In terms of an army build, it will depend on your style of play. Best way to get some ideas is to read the topics on here to get an idea of where some of the vet wolves are heading with the new dex.

Have an ale and welcome to the fang.

Welcome to the Fang and have an ale!

If you want a cheap source of fenrisian wolves, I would recommend a Bitz Pack of the old Dire Wolves on the GW website as you get about 5 for £8. Ebay is also an option.

Our drop pods work just the same as C:SM ones except ours can only carry 10 because we need 2 slots for the ale! :) Our Terminators can also use Drop Pods which from experience is a lot safer than deep striking.

The Space Wolf pack and Wolf Guard Terminators boxes are excellent sources of bits for your entire army, let alone to build your heroes out of. You could do worse than make your lords out of those two boxes.

The Space Wolves can really do three types of lists: Mech, Foot Slogging and All Drop Pod but elements of the three types can be mixed together in one list. You really have two options: go for one of stable builds mentioned earlier and there are plenty of examples in the army list section/forum topics, or you can just pick the units that you like from the codex, mix them into an army list and test them out. Eventually you will construct a list you are happy with. However you decide to build the list, I would recommend a core of several packs of Grey Hunters as they are the backbone of the great company and will serve you well.

Cheers

First may I say welcome to the fang.

Second of all you better not be one of those band wagoners.

And thirdly about you're army.

Never play a mixed force, you have to go all one way or the other for a wolf list to work. Now many of us play a mechanized or drop pod force, with me in the later. You're main focus should be on short ranged firefights followed by pin point assaults. So I find GH rhinos supported by a bloodclaw land raider does the job well enough ad in some other gribbles and you're done.

Thanks everyone so far ;) (how did i not notice that the wolves pack from GW was 5 models not 1.... :S)

Some very nice info there. Im Glad about the Drop pods, and i'm sure i will make good use of them :D

The way i play Chaos will change from game to game... i like Lash Princes, but not in the 'conventional way' (well how i have been told that people use them at tornies is to bunch up things then plasma cannon them with Oblits, i just pull units towards me and kill em... :P)

So i like a CC kinda feel, but i like having some kind of support mainly Defilers or Oblits. I also hate having my whole army on the board at the start of the game, so Drop pods sound good :D

To LHG, i'm not just jumping on the band wagon :P i have read the codex out of intrest, after only one other person at the club/ shop (i work for my step-dad at a internet cafe, where the club i play at is based, and he stocks GW stuff. so i get it cheaper :D), and after planning on getting a new army, after starting to get bored of chaos/lose a bit more (its gone the opposite to how it should go, i started off really really well, we had a league that started a month after i started playing, and i came second.... now i either don't bother making a very good list, or just don't play/plan well enough) and after kinda starting a Tau army ('borrowing' a few bits from a friend and starting to paint them, but not getting the feel of them, i decided yesterday that Space Wolves are the best army ever :D i like the models they are bringing out, and like the fact a lot will be left to conversions/imagination :D.

A couple more things:

THIS FORUM IS BRILLIANT (i used Librarium a bit, but after waiting a few hours or even a day or two for replies that all come from 2 people, who have a lot of knowledge on there army, but everyone else is just there for the help really, and this forum is geat, i put the thread up, come back 30 mins later and there is loads of replies...)

And two. The Wolf Guard units, from how i understand you can do this:

Make a 3 man unit, gear them up to what ever you want: say thunder hammer and storm sheild, or a frost axe or something, then put them in other squads, this sounds awesome....

Oh and also why can the Lone Wolve have 2 wolves with him? when it says he can't be joined by anything?!?

Thanks

oh and will any of the foundation paints work for the space Wolves colour? i just don't like painting with the normal paints for larger areas.....
