Where to buy the new goodies moral dilema!

looking forward to getting at least one box of each of the SW stuff plus codex and i have a moral dilema.

I live in the netherlands and so if i go to my FLGS i'll be paying €30 for the GH, €35 for the termies €22.50 for codex €35 canis and €30 for lukas and njal. €155 in all.

Online its €103 for the same, which if i added the battleforce it would come to €152 so thebattleforfce for free!

You would say its a no brainer but the FLGS has 12 tables where i play every week and the shop owner is nice (and let me paint the black box GH). Alot of people buy online and play in the store and i've sort of vowed to buy at the store. If the store goes down (and ive seen many go that way in my time) then i loose out so i see paying more as a sort of tax. But it hurst so much when i see how much i could save online it cant be right!

Sorry for the rant.

yeah thats the problem, i work at somewhere that sells stuff, so i get it cheaper than anywhere online, so for me it doesn't matter, but if everyone in the club here only bought online (we do sell stuff at betweem 10-20% off so no need to really) then it would all go downhill more than it has already, even though its an internet cafe :S
I sort of have the same issue. While I have 2 stores near by, one carries a good amount of GW product but only 3 gaming tables and another store where I am friendly with the owner, but he carries limited GW and pretty much only doing pre-order for products but he has 8 tables. I ordered the core items I wanted directly from GW and will get a pack box and the codex from one store and probably play at the other.

Therein lies your problem. Put some money through the store's tills helps them out and in a small way helps you to play at their store. Buying online gets you more for your money, and you can still play at the store.

I wouldn't say it's a no-brainer at all, tbh. I'd say it mostly depends on how much you can spare the extra €50. Support the store or support your bank account and SW Army?

Maybe you can work out a compromise with the shops owner. Tell him about your dilemma and ask him if he will give you some percent off the regular price so the difference will not be that big anymore.

Tried asking for a 10% discount as another store with no tables gives a 10% discount. But he said no, i understand that if he gave it everyone would ask. Also Hells highway (for FoW) comes out the same day so i may as well give him my wallet!

I've decided this: Split my purchases. I will buy codex, 1 box of termies, GH and metal characters on foot in store and canis and another box of Termies online.

My main anger is directed at GW. why are the online stores allowed to sell so low, or why are we being ripped off for supporting our local store?

Overheads mate

While someone with an online store needs probably only a shoebox storefront to run things and thus can hold down another job and not pay through the nose for rates and rent an indiependent stockist needs to pay all of the above and thus must put a bigger profit margin on the stock they sell so that they can shift it. It's then that toss up between cost and loyalty which we're offered as a customer. If we like the store and want it to survive because of the other things it offers then we buy there. Either way GW doesn't mind as it'll be the same amount in thier purse from either.

I see it as an easy dilemma:

1) Buy at the store, and now that you helped it stay afloat.

2) Buy on-line and know that you have no right to complain if it goes under...

What I do is this:

If it's a large order, I buy on-line, if it's a small order, I buy in the shop.

These days I pretty much always buy in the shop, and I would recommend that those who play in the local store (Whether GW or Indie) should do the same...

But thats my point GW should care, if my local games store goes down then no one plays anymore or only a few hardcore guys carry on at home.

I used to live in Breda where there were 2 stores in the same street, both are no gone and hardly anyone plays now. I wonder how much GW profits in that city have shrunk.

My dilema is solved but i know alot of others will buy online. bye bye free battleforce as well!

I used to own 2 game/comic stores, both had in store gaming. The local club would pull their purchases to get a better discount from one of the online discount stores. There were about 40 guys in the club and they played at most of the stores in town. They also wanted special treatment when they would come in. I hosted their tournaments and there monthly club night(adults only, alcohol allowed, and I catered the event). The guys only spent a fraction of their purchases at my store. I ended up closing that store due to personal reasons. However, if the store had been just a little bit more profitable, I may have stuck it out. I talked to some of my regulars a few months ago, they haven't played a single game of 40K since I closed. That was almost 4 years ago.

You can make or break your FLGS. SUPPORT THEM ALWAYS. If you play there shop there or you may not have a place to play in the future.

Actually, a few months ago GW introduced new trade terms precisely because a lot of FLGS's are having trouble competing with online deep discounters. Online only stores now get a smaller discount than stockists with a shop front, gaming tables etc, at least in the UK. I'm not sure if it applies in the rest of Europe though. It's one step in helping out the indies. Effectively it's GW acknowledging that stores which offer demo games, tournaments and game nights are helping to promote the hobby more than websites which just offer low prices. The store's doing the marketing, so GW compensates them for that with as better discount.

Yeah, but GW doesn't always treat indie retailers very well either. Often times they have to keep large amounts in stock to get preorders, or have high minimum orders. My FLGS doesn't really like working with them anymore, but it sells. The regulars seem to be playing more other games now though.

Still, yeah, splitting seems the way to go.

The only reason you should not buy from a LGS is

A: you don't play there, or you don't have a LGS

B they are rude know it all bastiches that deserve to loose your business.

I have talked to the owner of my LGS and convinced him that a 10% discout for purchases of 100.00 or more is worth it for him and gives an incentives to all those who are considering buying online.

Would he rather loose 10.00 or the whole sale, keep i mind that GW also gives discouts to stores who order a cetain amount of product.

Yes you save money on that purchase, but in the end you loose your local hobby support which unless you have a strong club pretty much means you loose your hobby.

Make sure you buy from him first tell him you plan to spend X amount of dollars with him and X online so you can afford the all the models you need. have him crunch the numbers for purchases of 100.00 or more, he should find that the 10% discount is a win win. Also ask him if he has a online store and if he does ask him what discout he provides. I assure you if he does it will be more than 10%.

Amen Brother!

True in this age of the interent you can get what you want rather cheaply, and in a few cases that is good, especially for those of us with little spending money. However it is important to remember that the people running these shops are people like you and me, people who are trying to make a living for themselves by selling you what you want. Just like the local Hardware store and grocery store Game shops are getting squeezed out by a bigger entity that can give people what they want cheaper. Its like Walmart, why go to a locally run place that has to mark things up because of their expenses when Walmart can homogenize the whole process, get massive deals by buying in huge bulk and then undercut them? Because the people who work there are your neighbors, your friends, maybe even your family.

Its the same with game shops! Sure it might be easier to get something online once in a while. It takes no gas and costs less, no real driving time required. But all that time and effort goes towards making sure someone in your community can eat and have a roof over their head, not to mention keep a roof over your favorite gaming spot.

The way I see it supporting your game shop is supporting your community. The Recession has hit enough people already and cost enough jobs without adding up the humble FLGS owner and his crew to the mix. Besides you are already overpaying for tiny plastic space men, special glue and tiny pots of paint, why not go in all the way?

Before Malta entered the euro zone we had to pay duty and postage on purchases. The local gaming stores exploited their position and made a killing off the gamers and hobbyists. Now that they have to compete with internet shopping, which offers cheaper post-free prices, the local stores have slashed prices in order to sell. If I was in Corver's position I might consider splitting my purchases to support my local store, but since I don't play at my store and my pocket has suffered enough, I'm going to give my loyalty to one internet game store in particular who has always given me a fair deal.
This makes me almost feel lucky that i don't have a LGS so i can order online till my purse cries. On the other hand i play far less than i would like to. If I get a game per month i am happy. I would play one each week if i could. Especially since i play both FB and 40k.

Another option is to find out what local game stores have online sales and see if they discount the prices there. You can still support the store and get decent prices. I luckly found one near enough to me to make it worth while. You have to spend over 100.00, but hey how hard is that with the cost of these stinking beautiful models.

Vrox.

I think i know the reason, the £ has really plumetted against the euro in the last year. so What can GW (and other co's to be fair) do?

Drop prices in europe, not likely! Raise prices in the UK, not popular. So I guess the UK online stores do well. And orkill is right, if the store goes then people stop playing. Anyway enough ranting lets get back to drinking ale and building skyclaws :P
