An Idea I've Been Toying With...

For some reason, I've got the idea stuck in my head to paint a unit in my army with black power armor. The whole 'Black Wolves' name has been rambling in my head.

 

You think I could get away with this? Maybe as Ragnar's chosen?

 

Or have I had too much Ale tonight?

 

I'd appreciate everyones input please.

Go for it. Give em a good story like Ragnar's chosen or something or whatever. It's a magical land of superhuman marines with wolf DNA. Make em look good and kill a lot of traitors with em. Story could be along the lines of Ragnar's chosen, or could be a wolf priest's chosen unit. Or painted their armor black in honor of Ragnar, some battle, or something like that. I think Black Armor wolves would look awesome.

The idea at least warrents you painting a demo model and post pictures. Along with what WG Dan mentions, work their background in what type of force you plan to use. Maybe go so far as to be all WG in TDA or something to do with Canis and alot of black wolves. Possibly infiltrator themed army using 3 slots of Scouts & 3 WGBL with hunter Saga.

Before I lost all my wolves, I had a black 13th company. Well, mostly black. I had some scattered red and green armor on them for the look of having battled with chaos. My "fluff" was they used the armor from killed foes for repairs due to not being near the fang or an IP. The black armor was in memory of fallen pack members. It can look good if done right. Only character in my army that was not in black armor was my WGBL. For some odd reason I went with a white armor scheme for him. Cannot for the life of me remember why though.

I'd like the idea of a disgraced unit who have painted their armour black until they redeem themselves in the eyes of the company and won back their honour and that of their Chapter. If you are using Ragnar's Great Company, then you'd have a good basis for this, since in the Space Wolf novels after Ragnar looses the Spear of Russ, he is given the chance to fight and win back his honour and that of his company. You could use this as a path Ragnar has set up for such occasions.

If you want to do it then do it. It is your army and your imagination that plays the most important role. You can always think of a reason why they wear black if you get asked. Maybe they once were outnumbered and surrounded with little chances of surviving and were rescued by the ravenguard and now they wear their colours to honor them.

My idea was to grade the shade of my wolves in line with their experience, so blood claws would have very light grey armour up to wolf guard being very dark, nearly black.

 

Space wolves are such an unorthodox chapter anyway, it's hard to believe they'd stick with a uniform colour scheme for years, let alone hundreds of them.
