ArmouredWing
Seems like there's not been much chat around these part in relation to the new SW codex release and how we (=][=, SoB, GK) shape up against the new Sons of Russ. That said I've been pondering how my sisters are going to perform against the more power player elements in the codex when they are unleashed for the first time in the ToS heat 3. I think the main thing I have been considering is what appears to be the general descent of the wolves so that they now look like they're 1 step away from falling under the influence of the dark powers and are they now more chaos than chaos? Looking at the biggest grumble doing the rounds (Rune Priests & JotWW) my first comment has to be what has happened to the monitoring of this chapter's psychic abilities? There's some pretty scary and formidable stuff in there... but from a sisters/WH perspective we're looking pretty good to deal with the problem. JotWW? Well I'll see that and counter it with Shield of Faith. Njal in termie armour? Heh heh heh, 270pts nailed by a 10pt combi X-bow staker! Pyschic hoods, psi trackers, a lot of the wolves new strengths don't look quite so hot when compared to some of our old school anti psyker wargear and abilities. But obviously that's just the tip of the iceberg, what else is there that we are potentially going to excel at against SW? Dark Lord Jim
Theres always the fact that most Space Wolves have to get up close. This plays right into the hands of sisters (with meltas), and ofc the good old GK termies. Brother Captain Kezef
Don't think Grey Hunters are gonna stand up to GK in close combat, even our PA troopers. jeffersonian000
Grey Hunters have both True Grit and Counter-Attack for functionally half again as many attacks as the same sized Squad of PAGK. Our saving grace is our +2 Str/WS5 CC attacks versus their vanilla-Marine CC attacks. Since 5th Ed is a game of numbers, I'm thinking their extra attacks will compensate for our high hit and wound average; basically, they cost less and are just as effective in Assault. We should be kiting as much as possible by staying out of the Grey Hunter’s Rapid Fire range unit they either commit or we are sure we can take them. Of course, this is just theory, as I’ve always just annihilated SW at range with my Land Raiders and just stay out of combat unless they force it. Grey Hunters lost True Grit. But they did gain bolt pistol and CCW, so that is pretty much going to be 3 attacks you are facing whether you charge or be charged. Then there is the wulfen upgrade (for one model in the squad): d6+1 attacks, rending. Costs as much as a plasma gun, so totally worth it to take for every squad. And they can take two special weapons, my guess would be meltas. Really, it looks really bad for PAGK against Grey Hunters, particularly in CC and somewhat in shooting if you don't take advantage of staying in the 12"-24" range. Sisters...looks even more bleak IMO. They are forced into that red zone and thus get only one round to kill the squad before the Wolves kill them. But I think that this can be countered with Serephim pretty effectively, so taking 2 squads of 10 is going to become mandatory and a good supply of faith for Divine Guidance. But true that, ArmouredWing, we do have significant advantages against their powerful pskyer HQs. Makes you wonder if it is really worth taking that Culexus (lol...jk guys). The Aegis and Shield of Faith help out in that department a lot but really anything else is a gamble if you are trying to prepare an all-comers army. If you feel so compelled, take an Inquisitor for the LR but also give him/her Purgatus and then Hammer of the Witches with a familiar and two warriors. First turn, Purge that pskyer and then Hammer away. Problem solved. Other handy psyker equipment would be the obvious psychic hood and possibly a Psi-tracker (but I can't see how it would be able to earn back it's point costs). And I just noticed that Liber Heresius is actually pretty sick if you have an Inquisitor handy. Take it. Aidoneus
I maintain that the ordos, while undoubtedly in sore need of an update, still have their place. Even on the tournament scene. I feel that we do best playing the role of foil to the most popular power armies out there, rather than trying to be a power army in our own right (which we, quite simply, are not). For instance, here is my current tournament list. It's flexible enough to deal with any opponent or scenario (a classic hallmark of DH Water philosophy). More importantly though, it includes many elements that work specifically against other popular armies. Deep strike is popular? No problem! We have two decked-out inquisitorial retinues with loads of anti-infantry dakka, sitting next to exorcists with anti-armour dakka! Psychic powers are popular? No problem! We've got Shield of Faith, Aegis suits, and a Ld10 Psychic Hood! Rhino-rush is popular? No problem! We can bust 'em open at range and pulverize anything that comes out! Horde is popular? No problem! We can virtually drown them in shells! And if the meta-game shifts in any direction, I guarantee you the Ordos of the Inquisition have the tools to adjust to that shift, and continue to be the #1 spoiler army out there. And hey, we even look good doing it! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179687-new-dogs-old-tricks/#findComment-2127716 Share on other sites
