rodgers37
Hello again.... I am about to start making a few lists, and wonderd what most people do when they make there lists.... do you base it on what you have? (not a problem atm, as i can buy pretty much anything.....), on what kind of armies you are going to play (which for me, would involve making lots of diffrent lists) or just making a few fun lists to try out, or just making one solid list, to use in everygame (which i have never been able to do with Chaos, i always change something, more than often the whole list :S) I play 1500pts most of the time, although i plan on trying to make people play 2000pts more often, just so i can have more in the list.... And a couple of more specific questions: What should i if i had any of these HQ: *Njal Stormcaller *Logan *4x rune priest *Canis *mix of lord/s and priest/s (sorry didn't mean to make it look like 1 big choice :S ) Thanks (i do have a basic idea, i just want some help from some Space Wolve experts, and since i never seem to be able to make one decent list..... i may almost tailor lists, to play against diffrent people.....) Oh and what would be considerd 'cheesy' (i hate that term, i guess teir 1 army would work, i guess it would be like 4 Rune Priests maybe ?) Toasterfree
And a couple of more specific questions: What should i do if i have this as my HQ: Njal Stormcaller Logan 4x rune priest Canis mix of lord/s and priest/s where i start is what kind of force do i want to play. For wolves it always starts with melee combat. each army has a specialty. Wolves its melee. We do it better then just about ever one (except for nids and in some cases orks). So I make my HQ choices h2h orientated. I take one in support. and for the new dex i will be taking WL RP and Ragnar. As far as your listed above HQ you can only have 4, so your going to have to pick. Next I go to my troops. I think about how fast I want them to get into combat. If I want turn two, its mech. if i want later foot slog. I am a mech kinda of guy, espically if i have to move from one side of the board to the other. I always take a pack of scouts designed to hunt tanks (melta gun and bombs). just to chew points which i may drop my current unit has a power weapon. for long range support, and AT work its long fangs, load out in new dex is 2xlas 2xHB and 1xML. this gives me good AP and good AT. then to slow you down, so I can get the assault on my terms, its a dread with two twin acs to pop your transports. i have added a vindie to take out high toughness /mass troops. as well as to deny a flank. you list is all about how you want to play. your going to have to fool with it to get it right. but then you will have future options as well. rodgers37
Some useful tips in there, yeah mentioned a few things i have wonderd about, and if i try to make a list out of the things you suggested, it will probably be pretty good, and balanced, which i guess is what i want, rather than making more specific armies (like having 2/3 squads of LFs playing against a tank army, or taking as many flamers as possible against orks, as really its not that fair, when most people i play have there basic, 1500pts list....) Thanks oh i guess the way i want to play would be to try and wipe my opponant asap, so i think i like Drop pods, i played a test game today against Tau, and apart from getting Canis killed, because i left him out on his own, not in either of the 12 wolve packs, and my LR getting killed first turn as well, (i was using Chaos as proxy ;)) i still got a draw out of it, mainly because of my thunderhammer squad and wolf clas squad (both in Termie armour....) i think i will focus a lot on Wolf Guard, which means i should really take Logan... (but of the top of my head i can't think of his rules...... didn't look into him in too much detail :S ) Thanks again... Toasterfree
NP. and i dont think that my list is by far fair at all! my 1850 list is gross!! of course it is pretty balanced. but i have lots of AT/AP and not to much of one thing over another. one could argue that could drop ragnar and take like an extra vindie, or another unit of scouts (which would be awesome). but i like the way that it plays. can make for fast games. El Scotcho
I think you've got the basic rundown there rodgers. And I have to say, I like your attitude when it comes to fairness, its sort of refreshing to hear about someone who takes time to put that kind of thought into something. There is one important thing I have to stress though, and that is the fact that it is not unfair to build an army to the situation. I understand that against your friends you don't wanna look like an :) hole, but don't screw yourself in tournaments either because you don't own the minis to make a good, competitive force. The only reason I mention this, is that I've been playing the game like that since I started, back in '96, and have only recently come out of my coma, so to speak. I suggest buying the minis you want, and coming up with a couple or maybe three lists that you think are good and putting them up in the army list subforum, and let people shoot some holes in them, and take their criticism and fix the problems. I am personally in the exact same boat as you are, having had to leave 2 armies behind when I moved. So I went to my FLGS and knocked together what I think are some pretty solid lists, and posted them to see what kind of responses I get. That way, I hopefully won't buy a bunch of junk I don't wanna use, but am stuck with using because I don't have anything else. Now I have to say that the list Toasterfree came up with sounds pretty solid to me, and I may try some of that stuff in my games to see what happens. Natanael
Usually when I build a list, I start with some kind of thought, or theme, or something. Like thinking: I want to use at least two land raiders. Then i add two land raiders, and start building my list around them, to support them and make best use of the trensport cap and so on. Eventually, mabe one of them becomes a crusader, and so on. That way I get a list with the cool units that I like, but also a list were each unit is built to support the over-all performance of the army. That, I think, is the most important thing to think about when creating an army list: "What is this unit adding to my army? What does it complement, if I look at the other units at my disposal" and stuff like that. rodgers37
I did on quick list that went something like this: Logan, 5 x wolf Guard (Term armor, SS, TH all x5) 5 x wolf Guard (Term Armor, Wolf claw x2 each x5) 5 x wolf Guard (Term Armorx5 , Frost axe x5) 2 Drop pods 1 Land Raider Redeemer Lone wolf (wolf clawx2, 2 x fen wolves, melta bombs) (or missile launcer things on Drop pods...) Its a bit of a silly list, but might try it out at some point, i plan on having all of that anyway..... hendrik
do some mixing of weapons in the packs;) and i'm not sure if you can still get the lone wolf it's heavely debated so why don't you pick another unit in a dropod so 2 of the pods arrive on turn 1 instead of just 1? Freman Bloodglaive
I tend to look at my models and think... what would I like to take. Now I'm going to have to do some arm removal to reduce the number of power weapons and plasma pistols in my army, but everything has converted over pretty well. What I don't like about 40k is the way you're limited to 6 troop choices. I'd prefer the fantasy system where your core/troops is unlimited and the special/fast attack and rare/heavy support are adjusted based on the size of the battle. Something like 0-750 points 1 HQ, 2+ troops, 2 fast attack, 2 heavy support and +1, +1, +1, +1 for every 750 points thereafter. I'm very fond of being able to adjust the force organisation chart, hence my preference for a Captain on Bike and Master of the Forge for my Space Marine army. Also a "counts as" Pedro Kantor for larger games. I might be tempted to field my Logan Grimnar model from time to time. He will not be deep striking into the middle of an enemy army with a squad of Long Fangs with multi-meltas. In rapid fire range even terminator armour fails too often. Grey Mage
I start with an idea- what am I in the mood to play? Footslogging? Mounted? DPs-0-doom? Once I have that I snag two troops units, kitted out with the requisite transport or lack thereof to meet said idea. Then, I decide on my first HQ unit. Often thats a Wolf Priest or a Vendread, but not always. Then If they need to be moounted I arrange for that, sometimes dropping a packmember to get them in a rhino or a DP if need be. Then I put in two support units that will plug the holes in my army- do I need some artillery? LR support? And then another troops unit... followed by another support unit, and so on and so forth until I need another HQ, then I start over. It usually ends up with 1 troops unit per 500pts, and 1.5 support elements per troops unit.
