Sgt. Blank
I've recently inherited some old Chaos models after my brother-in-law moved to Russia. I have some old Chaos stuff I haven't touched since 2nd Edition; here's my stab at painting an Oracle of Change (pg. 21 of the current Chaos Codex). I usually paint Orks and use a lot of washes, so I tried to rely more on highlighting/dry-brushing. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1321.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1322.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1323.jpg I'd appreciate any advice or comments, it's been about 15 years since I tried painting anything with power armor. Sgt. Blank
Not sure if the lack of comments means these look terrible, decent or people are just cruising through and don't care to comment. Anyway, I got a few more of the models sprayed and started. Older gamers will recognize these as the snap tight marines from the 2nd edition box set (see below). I used grey stuff to try to chaos-ify them a bit, I'd appreciate any suggestions since I've got a bunch more of these models and I'd like them to look decent. I have to confess, it looks like the humidity and my spraypaint conspired again to make some parts of the models rougher than I'd like. Any comments on painting or modeling is definitely appreciated, these guys are about 80% done. I still need to add the freehand chaos stars and arrows to the left sides of the models, paint the eyes, glaze the guns and clean up the red where I failed to color in the lines. I am thinking of trying for urban bases, any suggestions on that would also be appreciated. Sgt. Blank
Based on the advice about stripping old paint, I got some Simplegreen and went to work on more of the old models. Below are the rest of the tactical squad out of the 2nd Ed. box, with my attempts to convert them as Chaos renegades. Admittedly, no where near as nice as any of the current plastic stuff out there, but it's been a fun project and a chance to try some stuff I otherwise wouldn't have. I'd appreciate any suggestions or comments either on the converting or the painting above. I know I am not in the same league as many of the people who post here, but I am hoping to have a decent, unique, table top army from this project. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1331.jpg First three guys...I tried adding cloth (left and center) and some arrows to make them look more Chaotic. Chainsword is from the old plastic Berserkers. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1332.jpg Brother Bethor as icon bearer. Also added hair from 40k ork heads. My wife gave the guy on the right a spiked knee pad. Not sure if it will hold up to being painted, but was pretty happy to see she was at all interested in messing around with the model at all. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1338.jpg Chaos sorcerer with right arm from Asmodai. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1339.jpg Any comments or suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks for the comments and the encouragement. I've got an old school rhino in the Simplegreen right now actually! It's been in for over two days but not all the paint was quite ready to come off. I am using an old electric toothbrush to take the paint off and am finding the paint comes of metal figures a lot easier than plastic ones. Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that I am trying to take off 15 year old paint. nurglespuss
you can use harsher stuff than simple green on the metal models :D for a quicker result. Yeah the apint is acrylic based, so adheres well to plastic! If you could zoom in via microscope you can see where the paint has made the plastic porous :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179733-2nd-ed-marines-converted-to-chaos/#findComment-2157858 Share on other sites
Sgt. Blank
Nothing finished painting, but my old rhino came out of the Simple Green so I worked on getting it ready to prime while watching the Redskins lose today. Just to be clear which side it fights for, I customized it a bit: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1373.jpg Riveting (har har) http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1377.jpg Rear Armor http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1376.jpg Gonna try to do some free-hand on the roof and the side doors, but I am admittedly better with plasticard than I am with the paintbrush. Sgt. Blank
I've got all of the last batch of guys primed and have given them a coat of mech red foundation paint. I am stuck on a couple things and could use some suggestions. First, what color should paint robes? For reference, here is my Brother Bethor and Sorceror with first coat of paint. I haven't decided about bases yet, they will be either brown with static grass or grey with rubble. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1379.jpg Second, anyone have suggestions about squad markings? I like to have some way of telling units apart for gaming purposes and could use any ideas folks are willing to share. Doesn't seem quite right to me to give them codex style markings, but I don't want to get mixed up if there is a multi-unit combat either. Lastly, any comments or advice on the painting or converting is most welcome. I am prepping more old models for updating and hope to improve as I go along. firestorm40k
Wo, you've done a great job of 'recycling' these old minis, your conversion work is really effective, well done :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179733-2nd-ed-marines-converted-to-chaos/#findComment-2192512 Share on other sites

Sgt. Blank
love the sorcerer. The head is sweet! I wish I could take credit for that, but it's a stock head which is still for sale as the standard metal sorcerer. Updates: Part of my intent with these old figures is to get a chance to experiment with different techniques. I've been trying to do crisper highlights, shading and free hand...here are some more infantry and the beginning of the freehand on the rhino. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1389.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1391.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1392.jpg Close up of highlights and shading on front of tank http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1388.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/179733-2nd-ed-marines-converted-to-chaos/#findComment-2197075 Share on other sites
Sgt. Blank
Finished the freehand: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1397.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1394.jpg http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/Phothomas82/Chaos/CIMG1396.jpg Pretty happy, considering I haven't tried this before. Trying to decide whether or not to do battle damage and/or mud. I haven't really done much of either before.
