New Codex my thoughts so far

i know that it is kinda early so my opinion is based only in theory craft and some insane combinations :)

 

 

 

The Best part and the strongest point of new SW codex in my opinion is GH hands down . i mean they are cheap, very versatile , and with some very nice options . Blood Claws are good also although they cost the same with GH but i think that 1 unit in an army (with a WG ) could be handy .

 

 

Special Characters are quite expensive but they are very good and they could give you the upper hand in some occasions in you use them wisely. Thunderwolf cavalry is goona be my favorite unit (once there are some Minis :)) while i think that

 

Lone wolves could be interesting as a low cost character that could help a troop unit in defending an objective from a tough opponent.

 

As for wolf guards well we got our own termicide squads but more effective and more survivabillity (combi-melta and Storm Shield in a squad of 3 with DP maybe with a Motw to help if they get assaulted). Assault WG in TDA cost a lot but you don't need much of them ; 4 along with Logan in most cases can get the job done .

 

Well no matter what our new Dex is very nice with a lot of changes , a lot of opportunities , and most of all you have many, many ,many choises when you are making an army .

 

 

Btw i like the combo of ragnar+Logan+4 WG in TDA (SS+Assault weapons) in a Redemeer charging :P i think that almost nothing can beat that. would i be a little bit insane if i use this combo in 1750 army list ? :)

 

 

P.S i like a lot the concept of getting named characters as a troop choice (like Trikster and in some cases Araj) .

On paper that's a stupidly powerful unit, but I wouldn't give it many chances of survival after the initial punch. Everything your opponent has will fire at them the next turn and it's a minimum 727 points unit. And that's before you take the redeemer into it... Very powerful, but the law of averages will kill them quickly.

 

Or maybe it's just that I normally play very shooty opponents (Bugs and Eldar) so I gotta think of survivability when hit by 20 shots that can re-roll both to hit and to wound...

Anyone got opinions on the new artwork in the codex? Any particular gems?

 

Also, more importantly, how's the fluff content (should have plenty hidden in the beard there :))? Is it a collection of all that's existed previously? Do we see much filling in of events that have happened between now and the Heresy (besides the 1st Armageddon War)? Any mentions of never before heard of characters and their exploits, and not just the Great Wolf himself and the other big names?

yes it looks stupid, but also something that could ensure in most cases a scoring unit. i don't care how many points i might lose cause 5th edition is all about strategy and securing objectives, so if it it to sacrifice this unit to avoid some fire on my GH squads could be an option. Plus you have the LRR to block some line of sight if you use it wisely . so the opponent has to deal with a very strong unit plus a LR who can wipe out almost anything.

 

i am not saying that this is right just sharing my thoughts :) . all else would be seen on battlefield :P

The artwork is awesome! I can't remember any I didn't like. And they should have used the thunder wolf in one of the pics as inspiration for the canis model. Would have been much better and more sinister.

First page they have a beautiful Adrian Smith piece with a Space Wolf Riding a Thunder Wolf!

As I have the new codex, I'll just fill in some gaps here.

 

New psychic powers-SW have 7.

 

Bjorn The Fell handed is back-and if he's destroyed all SW become Fearless. He also has a 5+ invunerable, and a 6+ save against psychic powers.

 

Njarl Stormcaller is back.

 

Thunderwolf Cavelry can all be given Power Weapons.

 

Blood Claws can now only have 1 Power Weapon per 10 models [rounded up], but they can have a Plasma Pistol for free [so one with PW, and one with PP]

 

IC can now have Jump packs, or be mounted on a Thunderwolf.

 

Scouts are the same-but a bit better.

 

Jump Pack BC are now Skyclaws.

 

Bike BC are now [i think its Storm Claws-forgot].

 

An iron priest can now only have 3 Thralls, but he can also have 4 Cyberwolfs.

 

Fenrisian Wolfs can now be taken as Fast Attack.

 

Wolf Claws can re-roll to hit or to wound, ignoring saves.

 

Rune Priests come with Runic Staff, Rune Weapon, Rune Armour, and a chooser of the slain as standerd.

 

And the new sprues ONLY come with bare heads, or else Helmets that look like Wolf Heads.

 

The new sprues also include Storm Bolters, Thunder Hammers, And Storm Shields, among other things.
