Build a better Mephiston

Looking good so far, i'm impressed with how well your GS is sitting over the shoulder pads. On the body though, the chest plate seems a bit low down and a bit too 'bulky'. Did you carve away some of the plastic torso before attaching it? However, do eye spy white-tac? If so ignore me lol.

hey B&C...

it's a bit of slow going at the moment, as i have a lot of minis to paint for Dragonblood Miniatures...

not to mention this is my first GS project, so i'm tryin' not to rush the stages...

i have finished the Blood Angels icon on the shoulder pad...

the top bars of the wing have been sculpted to look even, and the icon has had all the edges filled where it was glued down...

first completed piece!!!

i've started on the sword arm...

the original metal sword was clipped from the left hand, and swapped to the right...

the pommel is my first real attempt at scratch sculpting...

it need a little clean-up, but will suffice for a first try...

now i need to clean up around the top of the hand, and sculpt the gauntlet sleeve, and power cable...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers

Everything looks pretty great so far, and I'm definitely stealing that mold technique for myself. :D

My only criticism is the choice of legs; honestly it would be better if you used the robed legs that look like they are striding forward rather than squatting, otherwise you risk leaving Mephiston in the same position as he is now.

of the two closed robe choices, this is the one that has the most forward motion...

hopefully the painting will show that more...

@drudge: thanks, but i have zero skills, i'm just learnin' as i go, and not lookin' forward to sculptin' the overcoat...

thanks for the positive support everyone...

the project is startin' to pick up speed...

i took the leap last night, and started to carve the metal Meph mini apart...

i will be usin' the original collar from the metal mini...

it was easy enough to slice him apart, but what a pain to carve the original head away...

the new head will be the plastic Khorne Berzerker head, with some long flowin' hair sculpted on...

should have some new pics on Sunday...

cheers

hey B&C...

just a little update today...

i took the leap, and cut the metal mephiston to bits...

here are the main metal bits, aside from the sword, that will contribute to the new model...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Mephparts1.jpg

i will use the skulls on the Greenstuff overcoat, and see how it looks...

if that doesn't work, i will make moulds of the strips instead...

they should do the job though...

i've saved the legs to use as a form for the mould of the overcoat...

the metal collar will save me a lot of sculpting...

i'll finish cleanin' and fit the collar tomorrow...

hopefully it won't look too silly...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers

hey B&C...

another small step in the process...

i've got the collar ready to go on, and the head in place...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/MephCollarFront.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/MephCollarBack.jpg

now that these two pieces are mocked up, its obvious that i messed up the placement of the chestplate...

it needs to be higher...

the skull belt, which will cover the rope, should be in line with the winged belt buckle...

DOH!!!

Meph looks like he's got man boobs right now, or else he's showin' his age...

i'll rip this plate off, file the chest down some more, and mount a new chestplate...

until next time, thanks for lookin'...

cheers

hey B&C...

well, round 1 of my fight with Mephiston kicked my butt...

since we deall in millimeters, each one makes a difference...

after seein' Meph with his head and collar on, there was no way i could just leave the chestplate on...

it was a couple mm's too low...

since it had to come off, there was no more excuse not to cut him in half, and make him a little taller...

i've also taken the opportunity to turn the chest a bit, and make the pose a little more interesting...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/NewMeph.jpg

i also trimmed down the back of the body's neck armour, clipped the skulls off of the front of his metal collar (i will put them back on after i sculpt the overcoat), and trimmed a little off the bottom, so it won't stand so high...

i've cast the new chestplate...

i'll put that on tomorrow and see what we have...

see ya then...

cheers

Aye, when you consider that Tycho is/was suppossed to be permanently assigned to combat duty, you would have thought they would give him a slightly more...athletic pose.
Well the model predates that particular bit of fluff. The models dates back to at least 1996, as it is in my Angels of Death Codex (In Gold Armour, not the Black of the DC).

As for this conversion, I love it so far!

hey B&C...

got a little more done...

now that the main body is all together, i'm ready to make the skull belt, and integrate the chestplate...

here's a couple pics, and a new Space Wolf for a height comparison:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Mephmock-up.jpg

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Mephmock-up2.jpg

he's startin' to come together...

next i will cast some skulls...

i tried a few different Marine backpacks for skull sources...

the best one turned out to be from the bannerpole of the AOBR sergeant...

i'll make 6 or 8 of these to wrap around his waist...

then all he'll need is a holster, some blood drops, and his syringes before i start on the overcoat...

see ya next time...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers

hey B&C...

i got some work done on Mephiston yesterday...

i had to put him aside, and catch up with some paintwork, for two weeks...

i should be back to getting a little work done everyday this week...

first off i started to build the armoured sleeve of his gauntlets:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/mephgauntlets.jpg

i still need to put some studs, or spikes, around the sleeve...

then a little more work on the sword handle, and his arms are good to go...

i've sculpted an armoured belt to mount the little skulls on, finished off the necklace, and integrated his chest armour so everything is smooth...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/mephprogress.jpg

i have to finish a couple more skulls for the belt, and then i'm ready to sculpt the overcoat...

slowly but surely, he's comin' along...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers

I've been following this topic for a while, and I have to say I'm interested in how it is going to turn out. The GS work so far is absolutelyh stunning ;) However, I must say I absolutely abhor that head. IMHO, its over-used for BA armies, and gives nowhere near the representation of Mephistion that has been portrayed over the years. Mephiston is supposed to have this sombre yet awe inspiring presence about him. A kind of uneasy attractiveness. The head you have chosen, for lack of a better word, makes him look brutish and bloodthirsty :D I don't mean to sound harsh, but that's just how I see it.

Cheers,

-Kal

hey B&C...

just a quick update...

i've been a bit busy with work for Dragonblood Minis, and been distracted by a shiny new Logan Grimnar...

yesterday i got a bit of work done on the sword, and made some rivets for the gauntlets...

unfortunately my glue chose to die, so the rivets will have to wait a couple of days...

i finished casting the little skulls for the belt...

if you look at the last update, you will see that the first two test skulls are way too fat...

they stick out like a sore thumb...

i have been sure to slice 'em nice and thin, and now Meph is ready for his coat...

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l266/jah-minis/wips/Mephbelt.jpg

unfortunately, the skulls will mostly be covered by the overcoat, but better safe than sorry...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers
