Bjorn the Fell-Handed

Hey everyone,

already posted this in Hall of Honour but...

Been working really hard lately so i'm rewarding myself with a new painting challenge. Space Wolves (but not for the cool new codex but for the new minis!)

Here is my own interpretation of Bjorn the Fell-Handed. I have tried a number of new techniques for the very first time including; Object Source Lighting, Greenstuffing and Blending. It's not the best dreadnought in the world but i'm proud of it. Before anyone asks, the banner is freehand.

I'm almost embarassed to even think about putting up a painting tutorial now. And if thats your first time greenstuffing, then I might as well quit now.

On a serious note though, great job, and I hope when I make my Bjorn that it will be near the same quality.

Nice conversion brother, I've been tempted to do one myself but seeing that I have two original Bjorn metal sculpts already I guess not :)

Might convert a "regular" SW Dreadnought someday tho, I have one already Named Tyr (after the norse god who lost his hand) because he's got two ranged weapons hands :) (bought him in terrible shape, and without the fist.

I'm currently working on a Dreadnought carrying a massive hammer in both hands. I was inspired by the one which was used in the 'Prospero Burns' battle at UK Games Day 2009, as well as being inspired to create a pre-heresy Thousand Sons army and a Coty of Light board.

Unfourtuanataly Magnus The Red cut Leman Russ in half right when we swarmed Red Magnus and his bodygaurd with Wolf Gaurd Terminators, my Wolf Lord [we were allowed to use our own Space Wolf models if we had them], and a unit of Adeptus Custodes, A Venerable Dreadnought, and a Terminator Wolf Priest. Damn Sorcerers.

Very good - great version of Bjorn.

I was hoping for a new model to be released for Bjorn but this is looking increasingly unlikely.

Not specifically a new Bjorn model, but a chaper one coming. I await the second wave release for the Chapter, though it doesn't mean I will wait on constructing my "vision" of the venerable Bjorn.

Beautiful work there Brother... that is awesome...

but what I really wanted to write about is Bjorn himself... is he actually useful?

Maybe I have just played Pods and 13th Co too much that the idea of a footslogging force (although some people have excellent records of using them) just seem too slow for my liking. Maybe it is the Blood Claw in me, but I tend to find (what little) tactical manoeuvring (there is in 40k) to be drawn out and dull and I want the exhilaration of the charge to wash over me.

Bjorn for me, does not fit into this style of play.

If he could have a drop pod, he would be too powerful and it would also be unfluffy... but in anything other than a footslogging force he is really too slow.

Maybe I am jumping the gun and commenting before I had a chance to play him for myself - being brash is another Blood Claw trait...

This is why we have Grey Hunters and older wolves to help us tame the inner beast and show us the error of our ways.

Played a game with Bjorn today. One word describes him: invincible. No, let me correct myself: INVINCIBLE!!!

He is awesome, my eldar opponent shot him with everything he had for 3 turns. What was annoying was that he kept on getting crew stunned. And he was even afraid to charge him with his Avatar.

Bjorn will be in any of my army lists of 1500 points or more.

Also, my local GW is having a Defend the Fang battle where everyplayer brings 1000pts. I may bring Bjorn just because I believe if the walls of the Fang were under siege, he would be the first on the walls defending. Granted he will 1/4 of my army but I think the fun outweighs the logic.

If anyone was wondering, the eldar player won the battle. Last turn I shot at his last single Ranger that was holding his only objective. My two long fangs with krak launchers missed to hit. It was a great battle tho!

Nice.

I have a similar banner, except mine depcits a dead thousand son, and it's not as well painted.

May I ask why you chose the Plasma Cannon?

I've always found that the assault cannon is better.

Simply because someone told me he could have one and because ~I'm a long time Dark Angel player so plasma runs in my blood!!

Thanks everyone, I'm really liking the thought of collecting what i believe to be the Dark Angels closest rivals and allies. Picking up some Terminators on Saturday so expect WIP pics after the F1 on sunday!

Cheers AB

Very nice work AB as per usual. The banner is gorgeous and the OSL is most impressive considering it was one your first attempts at it. The green stuffed pelts are also excellent as well. I can't wait to see what you do with the WG terminators!

It looks good on the photos, but trust me brothers, Bjorn looks even better when viewed in the flesh! It is jaw dropping :D

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Angels_Blade-Um...allies?

Space Wolves and Dark Angels worked together sucessfully on many occasions both pre, during and post heresy.

AB and I have the same view on the relationship between Dark Angels and Space Wolves in that their primachs were very close friends and the rivalry/disagreements between the two legions was due to the primachs being brothers and each wanting to out perform the other on the battlefield etc. I would go as far to say that they were the best pairing out of all the primachs.

The problem with the Blood Feud rule is that it might be written into our codex but it is not in the Dark Angels codex. It is up to the players to decided if the rule is used but most games I have played in, we just do Lion and the Wolf for the first turn and then leave it at that.

Cheers

That is a very very nice model :P

I am going to try and make one..... when will those Blitz pack with the wolf skins on them come out? they where in WD, but not on GW site....

Oh also, when taking Bjorn, would it be good to take another dread or two with him?

Um...actually...Blood Feud is ALWAYS in play, regardless of whether or not the dark Angels player wants it. The Blood Feud sprang up when the foolish Lion el Johnsen killed someone who had insulted Russ, and then stupidly thought that Russ was laughing at him, and so punching him in the face, knocking him out. They worked together pre-heresy because the Blood Feud didn't exist yet. They didn't work together in the heresy-they were doing seperate things. And they almost never work together post-heresy. Read Sons Of Fenris. That details an open war between the chapters [which the Space Wolves win, of course.
