Bolter/Crossbow?

Does anyone use this nifty weapon? I took one on my canoness the other day on a whim and I found a use of it in both games that I played. In one game I tagged A zoanthrope and in another I finished off a Demon price. I sure that if I had any other weapon in those situations the the reasult would not have been in my favor. Is this just a fluke or it is a peice of war gear that I should consider taking more othen.

I have one on my Inquisitor Lady (lord). I bought the model specifically because I loved the look of it, and it just screams nifty. Haven't had to use it yet (scourging is oft times more effective) but I haven't been too dissappointed. I've heard good things of people that had them on Veteran Sister Superiors though.

In certain circumstances this is the best 10pts you'll spend and its effectiveness is unrivalled when you know you're facing some powerful psykers. I regularly play against an old and well known nid foe who always dominated the game using tyrants, flyrants, zoanthropes and warriors but after I gave every vet one of these he changed his game completely.

The other thing to remember is how many rune priests a SW player can field, there's a good chance that they are going to become the HQ of choice and so we need to consider the best way of readicating these deviant witches.

Agreed, the Bolter/Stake Crossbow is a brilliant and oft-ignored piece of kit. A bolter is always useful and against psykers the stake is worth far more than 10 points! Due to the nature of it it's best not taken in high numbers unless you've a pesky psyker spammer in which case make like ArmouredWind and spam yourself!
The bolter-stake crossbow is a great piece of wargear, but suffers from the same flaw as other pieces of wargear that target a narrow, specific type of enemy; the risk that none of those enemies will be in the opponent's list. There are still plenty of armies that can't field psykers, and just about everyone can make a viable and competitive 0 psyker list if they want to. That's always going to make them something of a risk.
I take one on my Inquisitor Lord for a few reasons, such as:

Cool factor,

Medieval look,

Seems highly fluffy for a Witch hunter,

etc

and of course, when it comes to killing deviant witches, the stake is awesome ;-)

Congrats!

Finally one who doesn't goes main steam.

Such as... : "One should have 2 Exorcists, all sisters mounted in rhinos, 2 Canoness with cloak and jump pack etc etc etc"

Keep it up! Keep things you like, and do crazy and unexpected lists.

One thing to remember also is that you CAN use it against non-psykers, in which case it's an Assault 2 weapon. If you don't have scourging this does give you a few more shots before going into melee. It's not it's optimum use, but sometimes every wound helps, ya know?

Cheers Vash - I ALWAYS prefer the "cool" imagery over main stream/powerlists ;-)

And, even if you do have scourging (which my Inquisitor does have - the image of blue soul lightning flying from his fingers is just so cool!), it's groovy to use the stake before charging - not only do you get two shots prior to the charge, but you can then use the force weapon power. Very useful indeed...
