Army Restoration

hello to anyone who's looking at this :(

I have managed to crack on with my crusade army. After getting frustrated with slow progress I have started to concentrate on one squad at a time.

I've been painting the Aurora Tactical squad lately and they're halfway done, heres the first 4 marines...

I wanted to make the squad look very independant, a theme running through the army, with every marine having different armour and decorations

Beaky Marine

Sergeant

Bare Headed Marine (bolter not finished)

http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Miniatures/STP65740.jpg

And lastly, Grenade marine

http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/Cosmic_Castaway2157/Miniatures/STP65741.jpg

hope you like,

I also got my grubby little hands on these...

They are very thin and fragile, and although they are slightly smaller than the marines they are PERFECT! I have put a couple on some scenery and one on the base of my dreadnought, and they excentuate the size of the marines, probably because we know what an average skeleton size is, and they just seem to work.

I'll get some pics up of them later if you wish

Daniel

Looking good so far :(

Some very clean painting coming along! <_<

Mya I make a suggestion? , for the shoulder pad trims for your Ultramarines, perhaps try 4th company as it's a green similar to, and would tie in with, your Auroa chapter marines.

Hope that helps!

Good luck with the crusade!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks very much Brother Loring and sword brethren ;)

and now an update, I need other opinions, I'm getting bored and annoyed with my current shade of blue for the Ultramarines, I've been using it for years.

I've tried something Lighter and wondered what you thought?

heres 2 against each other, which do you prefer? I like the new 4th company one, although I dont know if I should darken the blue a tad?

The right shoulder pad on the new marine has the Black scribbles/blobs on purpose, I know it doesn't look th best in the picture but in real life it looks quite effective, makes the trim look like it has writing around it too

well that failed! Nevermind, I'm going to go with the Lighter blue as it is.

Today I've been up the town in the fantastic snow and ice, Britain hasnt had this much in years!, and came home with yet another box of Assault Terminators

I didn't want them to look like standard termies, all with helmets on etc. My vision was to show them as a tight knit group of Battle Brothers who have been in the same squad for years. To show this I have completely done away with helmets, all of them have bare heads of sorts. Personally I think this makes them look better and resembles the friendship the squad have, If I chose to write a bit more I would say that they very rarely wear helmets, only in the thick of a huge battle, and instead prefer to see each other.

Sergeant

I wanted him to look big and imposing so spread the arms out.

A slightly more industrial/technical looking Termie

3rd

His head is a chaos terminator sorcerer with the eye shaved down

4th and 5th 'The Twins'

Twin brothers perhaps? Joined at the same time and have been fighting together since?

And the Squad (sorry for bad picture)

I really love the Novamarines and I think they have a lot of pop. Your freehand work on the Aurora marines is nice and probably my favorite part of all the models.

Personally I like the darker blue for your Ultras but thats just personal taste!

Looking forward to seeing what you do with those terminators.

Well Tharand you'll be pleased to hear I didnt go with the lighter blue..... neither did I stick with the darker blue!

I've come up with an in-betweener, not too dark not too light, just right :)...well I think so anyway lol

He's still a WIP, not far to go though, a few touch ups here and there.

Nice looking smurf mate, a little above tabletop quality imo. Nice colour on the armour and clean painting. I'm not a fan of squiggly white lines to look like writing, I just think they look like squiggly white lines. Also I think the hammer could do with a bit of work to make it stand out, not sure what though, maybe a glow effect?

Post some more when you get them done.

Truly a newbie question but its so small!

The only place where you're admired for it! I've not seen this thread before, I really like your Aurora Marines, it's a good green. And the lighter blue Ultramarines are far nicer than the standard deep blue.

Thanks :Elite:, yeah the hammer isn't quite finished, need to do the details, I might have another shot at a glow effect, we'll see how it turns out.

How do you paint such small writing on the scrolls? Truly a newbie question but its so small!

Haha tis a fine question, I just use a fine detailed brush, but the very tip of mine is curved so I just dip that tiny curve in the paint that collects in the lid and you get the perfect amount of paint, then its just a case of very carefully doing the writing, I tend to try and just let my hand naturally shake, that way you get some very small 'letter-like' forms whilst having a bit of control, In the pictures they do just look like squiggly white lines as tyrannosaurus said, but it looks better in real life. :HQ:

Thanks  , I'm annoyed though because after doing this termie I feel I can do better on the Aurora's and the Novamarines but I just cant be bothered to strip the paint off again!

May I ask how you do your writing? do you use a pen like others I've seen? or just no writing at all?

And thanks again everyone, I'm halfway through the second marine so maybe some more pics after christmas!

and merry christmas to everyone! 1 more day!

The whole squad is coming along nicely and with some extra bits from bitsbox I've managed to make another 2, so I now have a 7 man squad.

Beautiful UM's. I'd say they are of far better quality than table top standard.

Thanks Dejay that means a lot, I've been trying to improve my painting for ages and I've finally reached a level I'm really happy with :D

And heres the next guy, obviously not finished, just sort of doing his right arm slowly.
