the new codex and new minis just on the eve of release is killing me, ive been thinking about converting to wolves but don't know if it'll work. ive recently bought a battleforce and built everything with a few exceptions of the scout and combat squad, i was thinking of purchasing the new wolves Grey hunter box and doing a 50/50 with the other squad and just sticking random bits of the other guys just wondering really would this work and who here uses just plain models for their wolves thanks

I use mostly plain models for my wolves- you dont have to go over the top with pelts and runes to be a SW. About 1 in 3 to 50% of my models have something "extra". If you bought a GH box set and mix and matched some peices you should be doing fine model wise- Im told theres even scouts heads in there, wich could be cool.

Now... why do you want to be a SW?

well the codex guys are sorta boring me their so plain and the wolves remind me of guys who do what they want when they want which i find would be fun, and their new rules look quite intruiging as i quite enjoy assault alot more than shooting

Good. Do you growl/mutter under your breath at Dark Angels, Thousand Sons, and/or cats? If the answer is yes then welcome to the pack brother! As for your original question of my current wolf force a total of 7 out of some fifty models have wolf bitz. This will change with the new box sets but it just goes to show paint is all you need for an acceptable wolf force.

Jonas is right. There's no need for every pack member to carry totems. I mainly try to ensure that all my wolves have bare heads. Those silly helmets just block the senses. Other than that, I don't make any real effort to add wolfy bits to any of my models.

Although I'm a new member to the board, I've been a wolf since my late teens. You'll find that most wolves have a love of the fluff before anything else and it just happens that SW are one of those armies that work best when fielded in the spirit of the chapter.

Anyway, should you decide to make that leap and give in to the wolf spirit inside, welcome to the pack..

My ordinary troopers don't get wolfy bits, I just make sure all of them have a nice close combat weapon somewhere;) But I like my weapon specialists both close combat and range to have something extra that shows their wolf nature, as well as all wolf guards and long fangs of course.
I like to use nilla legs and backpacks for my GH and BC, and leave the newer, more ornate legs for the WG and LF. Since GH and BC are the most common troops, rank and file so to speak, their armour would come from 'normal stock'. So I think if you did a 50/50 mix that would be fine. You can also convert normal marines by adding furs, wolf tails and tooth necklaces with greenstuff. Trust me, it's not as hard as it looks - and it's fun as well!

I play Salamanders and I'm now playing Space Wolves too.

After sitting down with the book for several hours.. I noticed how similar the two Chapters are. They're both honorable and caring.. but bloody vicious in different means: Purge by fire vs. bloodlust melee. I always wanted a CC Marine army that's not Blood Angels.. and now I found it :)

In a related question from a newb, would the Space Wolves be a good army to start out playing WH40K with? I read the new White Dwarf and love the army that was featured in that issues battle-- minimal machines and just tough infantry. I'd also like to paint my guys in more of a silver/blue/grey like on page 21, versus the brighter blue of those on other pages. What say you more experienced players and painters?

Its a decent start off army- marines tend to be pretty forgiving, and while wolves are less so they are still a very balanced and tough force.

So, if you like the looks of them* and enjoy the fluff and/or norse mythology Id say go for it.

*Its important you like the colors, as youll end up seeing them ALOT. The other color scheme is a rock Grey, and came first...s houlder pads can be any color under the sun, though pink may get you eaten alive :).
