New GH: PW, PF, or Nothing (10 man units)

Recommended Posts

If you're going into assault, a wolf standard is pure gold!

My assault GH pack is as follows:

9x GH - Power weapon, plasma pistol, meltagun, wolf standard. 180pts, 230 w/rhino. They'll accompany my Wolf Lord (Frost axe, belt, warrior born).

I shoot tough things with my other squads/tanks. These guys are to mop up troops and do drive-by shootings.

I've got a PFist/combimelta wolf guard with my BCs, lead by a wolf priest. With only 3 attacks on the charge ... that re-roll to hit will be very nice. :o

Am I the only one who thinks the wolf standard at 10pts isn't needed?

am I alone in thinking of taking a WG with a plasma pistol as part of a GH plasma squad?

Of course not, one of the very great things about our dex is we are very very flexible when it comes to kitting our list. We pay high points for the privilege to do so is the downside.

and is the PW worth 10 points on a WG that isn't meant to go into combat? is it a deterrent?

The only deterrent that I put on my WG is a PF after that anything goes or does not go in this case. The idea here is how to build a pack that squeezes out the most efficient balanced use of your points for said squad.

If you want a 10 pack of wolves with 2 PG, and 2 PP as a static gun line, yep it has merit. Set up inside a Rhino so you can move around the table spilling plasma death is another option and no one is going to question it's advantages.

When you see these one off squad ideas, the unit itself must form in the bigger picture of your army list or its useless. If you don't get why a squad should be fielded one way, then your more than likely running a different type of list with different tactics.

Have fun, be creative, by no means is there such thing as the perfect outfitted squad. There is only the one that best fits the situation you place them in during game play.

Vrox.

I was reading through this post, and thinking a lot about the various merits that everyone has put forward for the optimum GH build.

Like a previous poster, I had also overlooked the Wolf standard as a 10pt novelty points sink. But then I had another look, and I'm actually now a staunch supporter.

I think the thing to remember with the Wolf Standard is, it lets you re-roll EVERY roll of a 1.

That means hits, wounds, and most importantly for me, armour saves.

If you consider that in CC against a unit such as 20 orks, who've just lept out of their battlewagon. The Nob gets 4 PF attacks, the boys get 76(!) normal attacks.

Im not going to math-hammer it out, but you get to (in a perfect world of averages, lol) re-roll a third of your misses and wounds.

Ignoring the Nob's PF attacks, from whatever fights back you get to re-roll HALF your failed saves. That should be more than enough to help you win the combat for that round and force some more 6+ saves.

Just something to think about!!!

Vrox has got it:

Step 1: Figure out what job you want unit to do

Step 2: Equip unit to accomplish that job

Pretty simple, really. The trick is to try to avoid arming the unit to do every job; they can't do it all. Use other units for those other jobs. Otherwise you'll just end up building an expensive and inefficient one.

it is, however, of limited utility in a squad that includes wolf claws or a wolf priest as one can only ever reroll a die once. That said, for your regular line squads that are likely the whole "PFist WG, PWpn, Wulfen Mark" setup, yeah, the standard can be pretty nice.

side note: Said standard is not unique wargear and doesn't have any special restrictions beyond "1 Grey Hunter may take" verbage also used for special weapons and the Wulfen Mark. Therefore, it is safe to assume that every single squad of Grey Hunters may take a standard. I cringe, slightly, at the mental image of 6 squads each carrying their company's battle standard. Just how many flags does that particular Wolf Lord need?

Maybe I'll build a joke Wolf Lord who's wielding two battle standards and has a power pack banner. I can even toss a fourth banner on his base...

Well the problem with an optimum GH list is that since they are so diverse it is mission dependent. Depends on what you want them to do. If I take them with the task of assaulting then they MUST have the wolf standard. In my DP list(unless I know I will be facing someone who will assault most of the time), where assaulting is a second thought, I just can't afford taking them.
