Looking for Fluff on the first Armageddon war.

Right on the 17th of October our game store is running the first war for Armageddon as an apocalypse and I'm looking for fluff concerning the wolves. I remember a White Dwarf article mentioning Logan having command of a full company of Grey Knights but don't remember anything about how many companies of Wolves were deployed. I imagine a considerable force was deployed considering it is a key world. So any articles easily obtained would be much appreciated.

Question: Do you reckon Njal was there? I do but I'm curious to see what you guys think.

Things I know were present:

Grimnar (Perfect excuse to collect him)

Grimnar's company (Assumption)

Grey Knights Company

Steel Legion

I would appreciate if you could analyse my army and comment on whether it would be the sort of thing deployed to Armageddon.

I field an armoured company consisting:

Wolf Lord

Njal

1 Land Raider Crusader

2 Land Raiders

1 Land Raider Helios

2 Predator Annihilators

2 Whirlwinds

1 Dreadnought

Various HQ units.

40-60 Grey Hunters depending how quickly I paint the rest up

10 Sky Claws

5 Long Fangs

Around 15-20 Terminators

Obviously this is not a whole company but it's what I can deploy.

Cheers in advance

the grey knights were under the comand of brother captain allurian

in the older fluff it was 3 great companys you could use ulric he was there as well

and the steel legion troops check the demon hunter dex

your list looks good not sure of the helios though havent got that fluff avaliable

I know the new codex has a good section on the first war for Armageddon (Can't get mine yet because of damned flu - not that one!)  . The best place to check for WD articles would be the reference list stickied at the top of the forum. I'm sure Beef, Grey Mage and the other Rune Priests will turn up in a bit.

The army list looks sound with a nice balance of vehicles and units.

Good luck with the battle and make sure you post up a bat rep and some pics! Otherwise we'll send the blood claws after you :D

Cheers

It was Aurellian not allurian.

"A Terminator company held back the last large-scale attack of Chaos warriors but with heavy losses. Captain Aurellian banished the Daemon Prince Angron back into the Warp for one hundred years. Altogether, a bodyguard of over a dozen powerful Bloodthirster daemons and countless other minor daemons of Khorne were destroyed by the Grey Knights. Only about a dozen Grey Knights survived the conflict, but the daemonic army was completely destroyed. One notable survivor was Mandulis who would later become a Grand Master."

I will post a bat-rep but pictures might be difficult, it's going to be crazy with so many people eager to fight off the Legion. Not sure how many people are playing each side but there's going to be a fair few of us getting our teeth stuck in. I feel that I won't be in command of Grimnar but it's definitely a good reason to collect him.

Looking forward to trying to single Angron out with Agni Bloodhammer.

I remember the White Dwarf article (So not entirely cannon, right?) mentioning an entire company under the command of Grimnar. I don't suppose he was the leader of all forces on Armageddon?

It wouldn't surprise me if Grimnar was in overall command of the Imperium forces due to being the senior chapter master, but I think the Grey Knights would be working in partnership with the SW rather than under Grimnar's command. It should confirm in the new codex Grimnar's role in Armageddon but somebody with the new codex needs to post a confirmation?

Good luck with knocking off Angron!

Cheers

From what I remember almost the entire chapter of Space Wolves were there to defend it, logan was the overal leader all of the forces that were fighting on the planet. When the commanders realized that Angron was there the Inquisition mobilized a compnay of Grey Knights, at the final big battle when Angron appeared Logan used the Grey Knights to crush the demons while the rest of the forces held off everything else.

On Page 23 of the dex. It states Great Companies, but gives no mention of the exact number of great companies. considering that it was supposed to be a horde of enemy and the Wolves were outnumbered a thousand to one, I wouldnt be surpirsed if it was most of the Chapter. Logan was the Great Wolf at the time, so I am sure he had over all command of the ground forces.

It also states why the Wolves under the Old Wolf hate the Adminstruim(SP?) for they put all the surviving people of the battle into concentration camps, and repopulated the world, to erase the memory of the battle. Not Grey Knights or Space Wolves, but all the civilians and IG.

WD 279 gives a full account of the War. Grimnar took overall control of the Imperial forces, with the exception of the Grey Knights who obviously had their own mandate.

Armoured assaults are common in the Armageddon theatre, so an armoured column is appropriate and referenced in many places so I'd say go for this.

Njal is not specfically referenced as being involved in Armageddon, but he did banish a Bloodthirster so it ain't impossible...

Cheers for the info guys! I just wish I could bring myself to assemble more than two rhinos. (I don't like them)

Looking forward to going insane with all the new tricks. Rune Priest spam?

That wasn't serious, I see myself taking one, Njal or a standard one if he's taken.

I have the Chaos attack. Which is the original book and later free download of the first war i wil send it to if you wish as GW have taken it offline.

It has lots of details

Just for your info, I have it as well Mikal, so if you need anything let me know.

There was a lot of things getting blown up. Alot more guard then things getting blown up. Alot more green things then there where more guard then things getting blown up.

Very productive fluff! Except why green? The first war was between the World Eater Legion and loyalist forces, if I remember correctly they weren't a huge fan of green.

Also some of us like to field forces that fit in with a story which is why I requested advice.

Have a look at the little poem on the page with Ulrik in the old Wolf 'dex. I think it mentions something about a Wolflord Krueger on Armageddon and Ulrik slaying some berserkers. Might be more there. I would look it up but i don't have my 'dex at hand.

Remember- SWs were there as support so if your going for fluffy take all your rage out on the chaos marines, not on the daemons when possible- Grey Knights were there for Angron, and boy howdy did they do a heck of a job. Of course, it also cost them most of their numbers.

Also, I believe at the time Armmaggeddon wasnt the Steel Legion, it was a planetary PDF. The Hive Cities and the Steel Legion didnt emerge until afterwords- when every peice of plantlife on the planety had been destroyed by the chaos gate that lurked beneath its sands.

A small Eldar force wouldnt be a bad appearance, in case anyone has only xenos forces.

Cool! Cheers for that Grey Mage. I'll concentrate my fury on the non-Daemonic forces. I believe we may well have enough Terminators to make the company, which would be fun. Also apparently Skyrar's wolves might be making an appearance, at which I vehemently stated my disgust at te apparent violation of fluff.

Don't think they existed at the time of the AW1. As stated, the Wolves would have been best as the spearhead of the Imperial forces and the lethal edge of their blade - the Guard were there to provide the fire support.

Also, on the subject of the Steel Legions, Armageddon has always had a high mechanised force owing to the toxic atmosphere from the refineries and production plants. Armageddon was hell long before Angron got there.

All this info is getting my blood pumping! I will do my best to slay as many foul traitors as possible. My force is expendable in saving the world of Armageddon, I shall lure the cursed ones unto the guns of the guard.

Must write up story of this. I just hope the Imperial line will hold. We need some Baneblades...

Pah. Pup, you have much to learn. We Wolves don not use Baneblades... such is an inferior work. Deep within the bowels of the Fang lurks... the Fellblade!

(coincidently... that's an armoured column!)

Well I guess another Lord is making use of our Fellblade because I certainly didn't see one in the hangar when I was selecting equipment to bring with me. But I believe there may be a Regiment of super-heavy vehicles awaiting the order to deploy. And nice armour there brother!

I must say that our astropath is quite an accomplished chap, being able to communicate through the warp with such clarity.

Indeed, House Belisarious seems to know all the right positions to boost signal strength through those annoying storms.

Hrmm... *goes and checks Apoc and Reload* I dont suppose you have three Vindicators like Wolf89? That linebreaker squadron is wonderful.

Unfortunately not. I can not even boast a single Vindicator currently and probably can't until it is too late. However I believe amongst the Wolf Lords attending we can acquire three of the siege beasts, they obviously got to the garage before me and chose the vindicators.
