Wolf Guard Terminator 101

There are three things I really like about Space Marines: Terminators, Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders. I've got about 50 Terminators, 9 Dreadnoughts and 6 Land Raiders, even though they aren't the most efficient units to use. I just love them ;-). So how to use Wolf Guard Terminators effective? There are three (seems to be my favorite number) things to consinder. What they should do. What tools the use. And how we'll get them there. There something else regarding all three points: synergy with other units.

WG Terminators can be cheap or expensive ranging from a modest TDA and Energy Weapon outfit to Thunderhammer and Stormshield which is much more expensive than any other chapters Terminators. Why? Only because of counter-charge? Or is it because of the synergy with other units. Obviously Ragnar would look weird in a pack of Terminators but those Thunderhammers could get +d3 attacks. Are there other good combinations?

I've got the biggest problem with the transportation. While I love Land Raiders, I've got no SW tanks yet. And there are pricy which hurts more than in other Marine armies, because everything else is pricy too ;-). Droppods are nice but when using none SS, none ranged Terminators they're exposed to enemy fire. On foot they're a little too slow, aren't they?

Regarding the weapons.. I think Str 5 powerweapons are great but isn't the wolfclaw better and cheaper most of the times? Reroling wound or hit seems better to me, but I didn't mathhammer it at all.

So whats your experience, advice, ideas etc.?

I have my WG terminators with a pair of wolf claws, ive always had this since 3rd (its was lightning claws then), the one problem with them was walkers and vechicles but now in the new codex you can give them melta bombs we are now the only terminators to carry melta bombs, but they dont often get into combat with them anyway. They go around in a Land Raider as well I'm goin to try out the redeemer with them in a couple of days to see how that goes.

Regarding the Redeemer.. I love them. They flame through cover, instakill Eldar. It's nearly impossible to flame the same target with both flamers, but you can machine spirit one on another target.

On terminators, wolf claws are generally better, yes.

Frost blades are better when you can use an additional hand weapon, but without that even a single wolf claw is better against everything except vehicles and models with a toughness of exactly 6 (the difference between the weapons are very small though) or 8.

My analysis of WG terminators, based on both efficiency and price:

1 Power weapon - cheap but not very good, use for cheap extra wounds, or in small cheap fire-support units

1 wolf claw - very good option for footslogging/drop poding units. Under 40 points, decent killing potential at I4 and he keeps his storm bolter

2 wolf claws - Generally to expensive, +1 attack and no storm bolter for +10 points is not a good deal

1 power fist - Good option, similar to 1 wolf claw, a little more expensive but also a little more killy.

2 power fist - Too expensive

1 Thunder hammer - The extra effects from thunder hammer are almost never used, chain fist is much better for the same price (though, thunder hammer looks much cooler on space wolves)

1 Chain fist - Great against vehicles, especially walkers. Unless using lots of power fists, walker could be a problem, 1 or 2 chain fists solves that.

1 Frost blade - Costs more than 1 wolf claw, and the wolf claw is better against 95% of all non vehicle targets. With 1 or 2 fists vehicles should not be a problem either anyway.

Storm bolter - good when foot slogging

Combi-weapon - good when drop podding

I'm having a hard time seeing wolf guard terminators in land raiders being good. Compared to vanilla marines with SH/TH or even 2LC all versions of our terminators costs more, and the counter charge isn't that great when in a land raider since you are almost guaranteed to get the charge anyways. We also has other good close combat units that are scoring to put in our land raiders.

Though, there are some uses for CC-terminators in raiders.

1. With Logan they are scoring which ofcourse is nice

2. With Ragnar and a couple pf power fists/wolf claws, they'll kill almost anything

3. When another unit wants a terminator's heavy weapon (grey hunters in drop pod with assault cannon, long fangs with CML), you'll need something to do with the rest of the wolf guards, and without a heavy weapon they'll probably are not going do so much damage outside close combat.

If you just want to play terminators in land raiders, I suggest you use space marines instead of space wolf, they seem much better at that play style.

I believe (or at least I hope) that some options are expensive for a reason. So one advantage over vanilla marines is that our TH/ SS Terminators can stand pretty much everywhere and don't need to fear being charged because of counter-attack. Then combined with Ragnar and/ or Logan we have alot of attacks. Maybe thats a reason for their price. Maybe there is another. I simply think we have to use those "reasons" to make them viable even at their costs.

edit:

Uh ... while searching for a Wolfguard as packleader for the Greyhunters, I noticed something crazy. You could upgrade your objective holding Greyhunter squad with a Wolfguard in TDA, Assault Cannon, Stormshield (trading for the powersword) and Mark of the Wulfen. I wouldn't use it, I think, but I like the picture of a Terminator, firing it's AC and blocking ranged fire with a stormshield, while he goes berzerk in close combat ;-)

Why would you try and block a shot with your very expensive model (what is he, about 100 points?) and risk a 33% chance he gets killed when you can use a 15 point Grey Hunter meat-shield and ensure he stays alive to keep using that Assault Cannon that you bought him?
