WD SW painting guide

G day mates

I was reading the lastest edition of WD and I want to try painting my models like it says in WD. But I'm worried the colours they say to use aren't accurate. (On boxes the colour it says the colour they used are actually secret mixes that are impossible for mere mortals to mix, with the foundation colour being the colour written on the box.) Can someone provide insight on WD paint guide accuracy?

Thank you and FOR RUSS!

It's not a matter of accuracy, but a matter of interpretation. The current SW colour scheme is blue-grey. If you take a look at the 2nd, 3rd and current codex you'll see that their interpretation of blue-grey are all different. It is the same in military modelling. No one paints the uniforms exactly how they were, but every modeller strives to get as close as possible with his choices of colour mixing and painting technique. The 3rd ed dex had a more 'light greyish' blue gray, while in the WD it has a more bluish tint. Both are good IMO.

With respect to the mixes, they are not that hard to follow, they are just more work than I would care to do for gaming pieces. Don't forget that the WD painters do it for a living and their models are painted in a way to look good on the published page. My second SW army was painted in this fashion and it took me nearly 3 years to finish. Never again!

If I was you I'd choose a base colour that comes right out of the bottle, no mixing for me when it comes to a base coat. If you are not satisfied with the tones of any of the paints, then mix by all means, but keep it simple, like just two colours in a 50/50 ratio.

Make sure to post your minis when they are ready.

Cheers and good luck.
