Dreadnought: Bad Company

did anyone else notice whilst reading through the fluff in the new codex the passage talking about the number of dreads held in the vaults below the fang (Pg 13) think its says something like '... although the dreadnoughts number 100 or more.....' ;). a whole Vanilla sized company of dreadnoughts !!! is this normal do other chapters have access to a company of dreads?.

well anyway it got me thinking about the size of the chapter, taking the 2nd largest great company of 200 (actually says almost 200 but ill take the round figure) and with Logans being a minimum of 201 battle brothers, and the other 10 companies having an average of a normal vanilla company (100) it would put the MINIMUM = 1401 Battle brothers. The upper limit would be 200 (Ragnar) say 300ish (Logan) and the other 10 companies at a maximum of 199 that would give a Maximum = 2490. More likely the actual figure is somewhere around the middle value so just under 2000 space wolves!. Plus all the support vehicles (LS, Tanks etc, i expect them to have more than a standard chapter because of the large size and also they wouldn't be giving away all there stuff to new foundling chapters :P). Plus the accompanying Fen Wolves Packs which from the artwork seem to accompany the sons of Russ regularly bulking up the numbers considerably. Plus the existence of the 13th. Plus the 'rogue' companies (is there any fluff on these guys?) and you have a good number of wolves running about!.

well anyway sorry for the rambling of this madman (i am a little bit drunk and was just lurking on B&C and couldn't stop myself)

Fluff creep? :)

No, the Wolves have always had a high number of Dreadnoughts, most many thousands of years old. Mostly this is due to their founding - that they have not split up since the days of the Heresy. Now, Power Armour is pretty tough, and can usually be recovered and patched up. TDA is nigh on indestructable, and almost always repaired within a few years. Dreadnought armour... that just doesn't die.

So, if you think that at the height of the Crusade, each Legion had about 150 Dreads (and that's still only just over 2,500) and then each Legion subdivided with less Dreadnoughts... then the numbers of Dreads barely approach double figures for most.

But with us - well, would you give the Wolf Brothers (who were always doomed to fail!) Dreadnought armour?

Thought not!

Remember, at one Hive on Armaggeddon about 36 dreadnaughts and some scouts held off 114 Kahns and Deff Dreads... and they were far from the only Dreads on the planet. They arent horribly common but compared to astartes they just arent horribly rare either.

In fact, Id say Librarians are harder to find than Dreads.
