What do you shoot more often?

I'm wondering what to take on my second GH pack. My first is the sit back and hold pack, 10 with 2 plasma guns and a wolf guard termie with a heavy weapon (undecided at the moment - cyclone or asscan?) I don't think I'm going to have enough wolf guard in the army to get a second heavy weapon, so I'm deciding between combi weapons.

This 2nd GH pack is my go get em pack, with 2 meltas. I was thinking I'd give the pack leader a combi-flamer, to help against hordes in emergencies. However then I got thinking, what about giving him a combi melta, and the pack one melta, one flamer. Basically, I'm wondering which of the three weapons I want in my squad (2 meltas, 1 flamer) should I make the one shot combi weapon?

Do you guys normally find yourself firing your flamers multiple times per game? Same question for meltas, just once against a tank, or loads throughout? (At least the combi flamer is guaranteed hit.. combi melta may miss.) Because whichever one gets used less is the one I'd want to have as a combi.

Maybe I should just have 3 meltas to make sure I waste a tank?

(both squads foot slogging most likely)

Well I personally don't like combi weapons (oh god, someone actually dislikes them) because they are one-shot johnnies. However for flexibility I would say one melta and one flamer, then a combi flamer. Should cut back a bit on points and flamers are (in my opinion at least) a bit more useful than melta. I fully admit that popping tanks can be important, but well positioned flamers can earn their points cost (or lack thereof) quickly against light units quickly.

Thanks guys. I guess what else I have in the army would help you guys suggest options. I'm sort've relying on my GHs to be able to tank hunt to some degree, as I'm not sure how much other anti tank will be in the army. A unit of scouts certainly, a land speeder or two with MM, a drop podding wolf guard pack with a few combi meltas, but not a whole lot else..

Anti infantry wise, I'm taking two long fang packs, mostly with heavy bolters, and a smattering of missiles, and what with grey hunters generally being good against horde (having so many attacks + MoW) it may be more important I take 2 meltas to tank hunt, with combi flamer as insurance against mass horde.

Are combi flamers and combi meltas the same price for WG? Dex is at home till next weekend now.

I run 2x melta then smaller 5 man sized squads in Razor Backs with flamers or plasma guns. Depending on what I need them for...if going in a support role to the 10 man GH squad, the Flamer squad moves up with the 10man GH squad's Rhino.

When coming to a transport, 10man GH squad hits the transport with 2x melta shots, normally bringing it down, and the 5 man razorback squad dumps out and flames/bolters the occupants to death.

Plasma pretty much just sits on the objective.

I'd go flamer for sure. - Two Meltas should be able to take out what you need so long as you get the range, and hit hard and fast.

The versitility of the flamer will really increase the value of the unit. - Just make sure He also has a PF, CF, or TH so there is no loss of an attack.

My personal choice would be Long fangs with launchers or LC to tank hunt, and scouts with bombs, then make the GH the anti-swarm since they are going to be up close. 12-15 heavy bolter shots can potentially crush units, but LF packs have always been an at-range optoin, at least in my mind. Two well placed flamer templates, some bolter fire, and a well executed assault will shore up just about any nid or Ork selection more effectively than the long fangs.

Just my feelings though.

Depends what the rest of your army is sporting, I have 3 meltaguns 2 multimeltas and a combimelta along side 2 lascannons.

It really just depends on your play style and your environment, if you're seeing a lot of mech armies take the melta, a lot of walkers and MC, melta. Infantry, flamer. If you're there is a lot of terrain flamer.

Cheers guys, taking all that into account I'm going to go with the combi flamer and a chain fist (PF if points tight) on my WG leader, and 2 melta guns in the squad. I think I'll need to use the flamer much less often. Sometimes even not shooting it in case casualties prevent an assault, so it's really just a last ditch 'about to be swarmed' weapon.

I am now considering something different for my 3rd, and 4th (if I take one) GH packs. Was just going to go another squad like the 2nd (2 meltas, termie WG, combi flamer, CF) but I might take one or two small packs in Razorbacks instead. Or one big pack in a drop pod. Hmm..
