Grantyr Greymantle
Now that we have the codex (and some tasty new models) I could use some advice - not on an army list itself, but on what type of units to throw at an enemy. Those who've actually played recently, especially under the new codex, if you were facing an Ork opponent with… a Mega Boss with 9 Mega Nobs 20 Ork Shootas a couple of Battle Wagons (one dedicated transport the other a Heavy Weapon) a couple of War Buggies (about 1K points total for now) …what would you bring in your Strike Cruiser? I know there are various options, but what would you definitely bring along and why? Thanks in advance! Wolf Guard Dan
I am probably do not have the experience you want but what I believe that the unit to build your whole army around is the grey hunter. They epitomize what it is to be a wolf. Good at short to medium ranged combat. But really, I believe that you must build your army around its characters, that's what I think GW tries to do with the wolves. For that Ork guy, i am not too sure, have not seen an ork play in awhile. I would say make them roll a lot. This means, Grey hunter bolter, melta, plasma, and flamer shots. And get some power fists in the units for his mega nobz. And my advice is your characters should try and get saga of warrior born, expensive- true; but that is how our characters roll. Vilhelm
Long fangs with missile launchers can quickly take out the light vehicles, and then mop up infantry. A whirlwind would be rockin'. 2 or 3 squads of grey hunters to let them have it with the holy bolter fire- a Mark of Wulfen, a power fist for the nobs, and a flamer would be really nice for when you get a little closer. A small squad of skyclaws as a mobile reserve- again with the Mark of Wulfen and power fist. They can take it to 'em and contest an objective. *edit- preferably with a wolf priest* Also, this is the perfect time and place to take Terminators with storm bolters and power swords, and maybe a fist or 2 for the nobs. Put the nobs on foot early if you can- Suicide melta speeder or a las cannon in the long fangs. Some combination of the above, and you will have your ork friend's phone number on "speed dial." Bonham1963
GH or BC and lots of them. They get 2 free flamers when you take 10. Fire is Ork repellant, IMHO. BC would need WG to control their bezerker and headstrong, so GH would be cheaper. GH have better WS and BS for the same points, but BC have +2 attacks, so they are both good, IMHO. They're are troops so scoring and capturing isn't a problem. Dreadnaught- AC+HF, EA 2x 10 Grey Hunters- 2x Meltagun, PF. 1x 10 Grey Hunters- 2x Plasmagun, PF. 5x LF- 2x ML, 2x LC Whirlwind. And for the first time in almost 8 years, maybe a Rune Priest. That right there is what I would bring to the party. The whilrwind to mop up the shoota boyz and the buggies. The long fangs to take out the battlewagons then once the mega nobs and boss are out and slowly walking around just blast them with melta, plasma, assualt cannon and if the long fangs can join in the party all the better. I'm an old ork player returning to the wolves and I would hate to face this with those orks. Ryzouken
I'd run the Rune Priest over the Wolf Lord on the grounds of Jaws turning the hard as nails MegaNobz unit into green slush. After that, yeah, 30 odd Grey Hunters and a mess of multimelta/lascannon platforms for swatting the Battlewagon and buggies from range. Missiles will also work for the buggies, but not for the Battlewagon on account of its AV14. If it takes an 'Ard Case, it's no longer open topped, meaning you can't destroy it except by glance-death with any Str 8 guns. Basic bolter fire will take care of the mob of 20 shoota boys. I'd not take more than maybe a single template weapon or two, just enough to keep the orks honest. Heavy Bolters often end up scratching up more hits than small blasts and don't slow your game down while the ork player tries to maintain 2" coherency.
